Miki celebrated her 18th birthday with her host family and new friends. It was a memorable day filled with joy and laughter, marking a significant milestone in a foreign land.
Prom Night
Experiencing prom was like a dream come true for Miki. She attended the event in a limousine, feeling like a celebrity for the night. It was a glamorous experience that she cherished deeply.
Graduation Ceremony
Though Miki couldn’t walk the stage at her graduation ceremony, she still felt a sense of accomplishment donning the traditional gown and hat. The celebration of her hard work and achievements was a proud moment.
Canada Day in Ottawa
Celebrating Canada Day in the nation’s capital was an exhilarating experience. Miki enjoyed face painting with other exchange students, immersing herself in the festive spirit and camaraderie.
Quebec City
Quebec City became Miki's most favourite place in Canada. As an avid fan of Korean dramas, she was thrilled to visit the locations where some scenes were shot. The charm and history of the city left a lasting impression on her.
Host Family Adventures
First Host Family
Miki’s first host family felt similar to her own back in Japan, making the transition smooth and comfortable. She learned to play Crokinole, a traditional Canadian board game, which became a fun new hobby.
Second Host Family: Lenee
Spending Christmas and New Year with her second host family, Lenee, was heartwarming. They introduced her to paintball, adding an element of adventure and excitement to the holiday season.
Third Host Family: Marg and Tom Hayes
With her third host family, Marg and Tom Hayes, Miki learned to ski and explored the vibrant city of Montreal. These experiences added a thrilling and cultural dimension to her Canadian adventure.
Final Host Family: Dianne Howie
Her final host family, Dianne Howie, provided a fun and engaging environment. Miki enjoyed chasing their cat and visiting the majestic Niagara Falls. The realization of her impending departure made buying souvenirs bittersweet, as she tried to savour every remaining moment in Canada.
Looking Ahead
As her exchange year drew to a close, Miki expressed a strong desire to return to Canada, possibly with her mom, although the exact timing remains uncertain. In the meantime, she is committed to assisting new exchange students upon her return to Japan, sharing her experiences and helping them navigate their own journeys.
Future Plans
In September, Miki will be starting university, focusing on learning more about other countries and marketing. Her time in Canada has undoubtedly enriched her perspective and ignited a passion for cultural exchange, setting the stage for a bright and promising future.
