The World MAritime University (WMU) was founded in Malmö in 1983 by the international Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, as its premier centre of excellence for maritime postgraduated education, research, and capacity building. The University offers unique postgraduate educational programmes, undertakes wideranging research in maritime and ocean-related studies, and continues maritime capacity building in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The World Maritime University is the only UN institution that has its headquarters in Sweden. Since 1983, it has now more than 5,000 alumni from 170 different countries.
