RYLA 2023 happened, and it was glorious. If I had to describe RYLA this year in one word, it would be perseverance. It had been three long years since we had an in-person RYLA. The committee and head facilitators worked tirelessly to plan RYLA on three different occasions, but each time it was either cancelled or didn't turn out as we had hoped (such as the Virtual RYLA in 2021). This year's RYLA almost didn't happen due to a low number of registrations three months ago. However, we were determined to revive the program and pushed forward; committed to running RYLA regardless of the number of participants.
Fast forward to a week before RYLA: we had 44 participants registered, all with sponsorship. Our goal for this year was 40 participants. We extend our sincerest thanks to the 25 Rotary Clubs in the district that provided sponsorship and the many Rotarians and Rotaractors who offered their support.
Despite some last-minute cancellations, RYLA kicked off on Friday, 12 May. It felt as if no time had passed since the last in-person RYLA in 2019. The facilitators were prepared and eager to share this life-changing experience.
The participants listened to various speakers throughout the weekend, engaged in teambuilding exercises, and grew together on their leadership journeys. One crucial aspect of RYLA is a service project that allows participants to give back to the community. We designed the project to challenge participants to organize and complete it quickly with minimal guidance. The task involved assembling 200 kits for Days for Girls, an organization working to eliminate the stigma and limitations surrounding menstruation. Despite a rough start, the group persevered and finished the project in half the allotted time. Although the group was divided in their approach, leaders emerged, took responsibility, and sought reconciliation. At that moment we knew the magic of RYLA was alive and thriving.
Participants, who were initially strangers, left RYLA as if they had been lifelong friends. While it's difficult to summarize the individual journeys, we know that this experience has profoundly changed them. RYLA doesn't just transform the lives of the participants, but also the team of eight facilitators led by two head facilitators who essentially run the four day program. Their leadership, guidance, and enthusiasm were evident and is a large part of the reason behind the participants' positive experience. In return, the facilitators gain personal growth, develop leadership skills, and gain confidence in making a difference in someone else's life.
“This was the best experience of my life. I cannot express how much growth I’ve felt in myself. I can’t wait to see what my future has because of this event.” Testimonials like this keep us pushing through to see RYLA happen.
