Bulletin for October 3rd, 2019
Guests  Melly Watson, John Rushton and David Vandenburg, all from the Burlington Compassion Society; Yahel Stein, our exchange student from Switzerland; Leana Alvarez and David Sandberg, both prospective new members; Joe Chalklin, guest of Anthony Ford-Jones and also a prospective new member of the club and finally, Dr. Nandini Daljit, our Guest Speaker.

Report from Yahel  Yahel had a lot to report this week despite saying that she was not as busy this week and writing as fast as I could, I may have missed some of her events. She went with Jamie to Puddicombe’s Apple Farm to pick apples.  She mentioned that she had never seen anything like this in Switzerland. She also went to a Bar B Q and to Karmel’s home. She went as a volunteer to the Amazing Bed Race with Sheila and Owen but found they weren’t needed to they went back to Owen’s place. She also went on a 2 hour City of Toronto Bus Tour where she saw the Toronto Islands, Casa Loma, the Distillery District and ended up at a Spanish Restaurant for dinner.  She isn’t too impressed with our cold weather and rain.  She is still planning a gaming evening during the middle of October or November.

Donation to the Compassion Society of Burlington   Melly Watson thanked the club for including them in our donation efforts at Lakeside a la Carte. She mentioned that they service 700 registered family units with 47% being children from low income families where basic necessities are provided.  They have a store-front operation from which they dispense food and clothing to the needy. They partner with other agencies such as the Salvation Army for support. They are experiencing a 17% increase in the number of clients. She acknowledged the work of volunteers in their agency where 10,000 volunteer hours were donated last year. Churches, schools (high school students) and others were also acknowledged and thanked. Also, she thanked the community at large who donate food and clothing.

David Vandenburg thanked us for making them the charity of choice at Lakeside.  In using their agency for the Lottery Licence, the funds have to be used for something new.  They require 4000 sq. ft. of new space as their existing location has been sold for development (plaza where the Bingo Connection is located). Jamie’s name came up in this connection.

A cheque for $8000 was presented to the Burlington Compassion Society.

Announcements  It was announced that there would be a Future Club Planning Session at our Oct 17th meeting however we later received an email stating that it had to be rescheduled for Oct 24th.  Therefore, as a lot of decisions will be made regarding the future direction of our club, please plan to attend that meeting if you want to provide input.

Sheila Welham reported that our Remembrance Day event would be held on Wednesday November 13th at the Halton Naval Veterans Hall, 2444 Industrial St. Arrive by 6 PM; Dinner is served at 7 PM. Tickets are $35.

Nancy Penney reported that our outbound exchange student Sean is involved in a wheel chair project in Peru.

Sergeant at Arms  Andrew Gaydon was filling in today. He fined a number of people including Owen McElhinney who disparagingly promised Andrew that he would be his Sergeant next year. Andrew of course had to report on his favourite sport – Rugby and how the Canadian team did in their match against the N Z All Blacks – they of course lost if you had not heard. A lot of happy dollars were collected but I will mention just one – regarding the Ride to Provide. Bryce Leggatt reported that 2 teams participated and $5-6000 was raised by them for the Burlington Food Bank.

Guest Speaker Dr. Nandini Daljit   Karmel Sakran introduced one of his clients. She is past Dean of Health Sciences at Mohawk College and now works in private practice as a psychotherapist.

She announced that she was going to talk on the subject of “breathing” but following her talk I feel that “deep breathing” was more appropriate. She recounted that she contracted MS a few years ago and had regressed to the point where she needed a walker to get around.  She heard about a cure in her native India and went there to get this operation.  After the operation her Doctor announced that she really didn’t need the operation and that with proper breathing she could have achieved the relief she was seeking. She went on to learn more about this and now walks normally and many of her symptoms have disappeared. Similar results have been achieved by diabetics and with other diseases and ailments.

She instructed us in proper breathing and I don’t know if I can relay the message properly but it involves taking a very deep breath whereby the diaphragm between the lungs and the stomach is pushed down into the stomach extending the stomach slightly. The breath is held for a few seconds and exhaled fully.  She suggests doing 3 of these, 3 times daily and after a week or 10 days you will achieve a better wellbeing  including improvement in any maladies you may have. As an alternative or in addition she recommended doing deep breathing through your nostrils.  Do this 10 times per day.  I think the secret is exhaling the stale air in your lungs but what do I know? I thought I would see what there was on the internet on this subject and the following seemed to confirm some of Nandini’s presentation: https://drhealthbenefits.com/lifestyle/healthy/healthy-habits/health-benefits-of-deep-breathing-exercise .

Dr. Daljit was thanked for her presentation and presented with the Certificate for 120 doses of Polio Vaccine donated to Polio Plus on her behalf.
