Bulletin for February 4, 2016

Welcome to the beginning of homecoming month at RCBC. In Bryce's absence alumni Kathy Thomas took her place at the podium and the ceremony began!

Out of the ordinary grace by Renee-nicely done-the anthem by Dave Beckett-kick started by Rene and a rousing rendition of guests and the 4-way by Jim Brindle. Although unbeknownst to Jim, he would pay later for his recitation of the guest book.

Guests today included Glenn Page from Rotary Lakeshore, 2 lovely ladies from Rotaract-Karla and Kristi- and our own Agustina and our outbound student Camila.

Very few announcements today.

A reminder that we are looking for volunteers for Lakeside a la Carte. We have several committee chairs and would like everyone to take an active part in the event.  The date is Sunday August the 14th.

Ditto for the Golf Tournament. Basically 110,000.00 is at stake so please answer the call!

Agustina had a busy week – the highlight being a ski trip to Beaver Valley-hmmmmm someone must know someone there- and dinner back at the Ruddy's. She was quite embarrassed to admit that she fell while standing still. Haven't we all and some not even on skiis!

Rotaract is holding it's 5th Annual Pub Quiz at the Black Bull on Tuesday the 15th of March! Rumour has it that it is a blast and a good chance to find out how much we really don't know! It's 40 bucks a team. Irish attire encouraged!

Here is the e-mail address to register. burlington.rotaract@gmail.com .

They are small but mighty group so let's try and get a couple of teams out to support them. We are going to donate two tickets to Lakeside to their silent auction and all proceeds go to the "Sleeping Children Around the World"
Charity.

A reminder of our Club Social to be held next Tuesday the 9th at Paradiso in Village square starting at 6:00. Hope to see as many of you there as possible!
(Please RSVP Sheila regarding Paradiso)

Jamie was in fine form and collected fines for not hosting exchange students and from Jim for not recognizing 'Guest of who? And a few other atrocities.
Happy dollars were many including an unbelievable  disclosure- alert the media-ALBERT HAS E_MAIL! Well actually it's his son's but it's a step in the right direction! He might actually read this!

Sheila is heading out Camp Wanakita with the exchange students. Hope the weather holds!

Kathy is celebrating 20 years in our Rotary Club- -Lovely words from her and also lovely words from the club right back at her! Congratulations on your anniversary!

Karmel reported that things are moving forward rapidly on the Syrian Refugee front and things are falling into place to potentially welcome a family in very short order. Stay tuned.

Richard reported that plans are well underway for the leadership camp and speaking of leadership or lack thereof Johanna had a happy dollar to celebrate the fact that Donald Trump didn't win the Iowa caucus.! Scary times.

Our own Randy Smallbone was the speaker this morning, pinch hitting for Robert Tomas who, if I heard correctly , quit the NYO. I didn't think we were that intimidating.
Randy gave a solid history of the National Youth Orchestra and the terrific opportunities that it provides for Canada's emerging musicians from 16-24.

NYO Canada was the brainchild of the noted conductor Walter Susskind, who joined the Toronto Symphony Orchestra as its Music Director in 1956.  Based on his earlier experience with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, Susskind became convinced that a training orchestra for outstanding young Canadian musical talent was essential. In the summer of 1960, Susskind and Harman Haakman directed a pilot workshop for young musicians in Stratford, Ontario.  Its success and the subsequent support of several Toronto business people led to the formation of the National Youth Orchestra Association in 1960, a federally chartered, non-profit organization devoted to the discovery and training of accomplished young Canadian musicians.

The original function of NYO Canada was to prepare a student orchestra for an annual cross-Canada tour.  As time went on, however, the organization developed and elaborated its instructional program, becoming primarily a training body dedicated to perfecting the skills and talents of the best young Canadian musicians for careers as professional orchestral players through short but intensive summer session programs.  The touring function of the orchestra, rather than being virtually the sole focus of the NYO Canada, remained a vital and integral part of a broader professional instructional program.

The NYO Canada's concert tours have included every major Canadian city as well as occasional trips to the United States, Europe, and Asia.  Strategic partnerships with the RCB Foundation, TD and Air Canada and many others insure that student suffer as little financial hardship as possible while training to become professional musicians.

More performers in Canada's professional orchestras are alumni of NYO Canada than any other institute or university. Approximately one third of Canadian professional orchestral musicians are alumni of NYO Canada. Each year, NYO Canada auditions about five hundred students between the ages of 16 and 28. From those auditions, we select 90-100 of Canada's most promising young orchestral musicians to participate in our summer training institute, where they will benefit from rigorous individual, sectional, chamber and orchestral instruction; training in health and injury prevention; and workshops ranging from audition techniques to the skills required to market one's musical career.

Randy is a proud member of the B of D and his passion for the students and the program is evident!

Have a great weekend everyone!

C.B. Skwyber.
