Only two guests today, our new exchange student Yahel and our Guest Speaker, Henry Franc. Yahel gave a repot on her activities for the last 2 weeks. She had a lot to report and despite writing as fast as I could, I didn’t catch everything. She went to Niagara Falls with Karmel where she also sampled Niagara fruit; she went on an orientation weekend to Woodstock; she has been going to school which she says is different than that in Switzerland and is not sure which she likes best; she witnessed a dragon boat race; she also spent time at Owen’s house. She would like to organize an evening of games with club members. She will give us more information on this shortly. Announcements - Telling Tales is this weekend.
- Oct 30 (evening) is a 4 club cluster meeting at the Holiday Inn. Speaker is Wilf Wilkinson, Past President of Rotary International in 2007-8 and a Rotarian from Trenton, On. There will be a buffet dinner ($30).
- President David Roscoe announced that he was thinking of having a dinner get together every couple of months on a Friday evening and asked those present if there was interest – there was.
- David also announced that the Golf Club Clubhouse would be closed for renovations from January to July and said we could continue to meet in the curling lounge or go to another venue. A vote produced the decision of another venue.
- Nancy Penney gave a brief summary of the Community Service Breakfast and reported that next year’s meeting would be held at a different time of the year. It was later mentioned that the leftover food from the breakfast was taken to the Next Door Social Space so it wasn’t thrown out.
- Mike Molloy reported that the next Rotary training opportunity would be on October 19th. He also stated that emails have been sent out on the school breakfasts and also posted on our web site but did not say how to access the information there. He also reminded us to get our Police Check Declarations to him ASAP. Send him an email to get a copy of the form mmolloy55@icloud.com .
- Catherine Brady asked for one or more club members to step up and help in the scribing process. With only 3-4 people available to do this, more help is needed especially when everyone is away. Janet Canavan is helping out on a one time basis next week when all 4 scribes are away. Please help us out on this task. You don’t have to do the other duty roster assignments when you are a scribe and the pay is truly great!
- David stated that very few forms were returned regarding the future direction of the club (this is probably due to the fact that he was away and no one seemed to know who was collecting them). He is coming up with a voting mechanism to do this for those present on a certain day.
- Rod Collard, during his Sergeant at Arms session, announced that he and three others were looking for sponsors in the Ride To Provide bike event on September 27th. Proceeds go to the Burlington Food Bank. Help them out folks by going to: https://ridetoprovide.dojiggy.com/b9296f8/regPages/pages/?p=183357 A tax receipt will be issued.
Guest Speaker – Henry Franc Terry Sedore introduced Henry today but before the meeting he sent out the following notice: Henry Franc is a Technology Solutions Architect acting as a trusted advisor to end-users as well as the professional community. In this role he provides technical, operational, planning and design support from a premises and enterprise perspective; focusing not just on products but on business drivers across verticals and geographies. ) My first reaction was –OMG why did I have to be scribe today? I probably won’t understand what this guy is saying. However his talk was just the opposite – as he said that he tries to help who feel trapped by technology and buzzwords. He used as an example – his mother who has Alzheimer’s Disease and her fear of technology. He also used his experience when the Toronto Airport was in the planning stage of its expansion. During the meeting of the various trades, it was announced that their focus should be on the objective of moving people and baggage as efficiently as possible. He used another example of a hospital where sometimes technology clouds what we are trying to do when our basic need is clinical care. The hospital staff has to articulate their needs. Technology helps us to achieve our goals in meeting our clinical care objectives. Don’t be pushed onto something if it doesn’t meet your need. He backtracked to his mother with dementia who lives in a one bedroom apartment. She doesn’t need a cell phone if she has a landline. He also talked about some of the buzzwords being used – IoT - internet of things where there is an increasing connection of devices – now more than there are people in the world; 5G – future faster cellular system but not available yet; AI – artificial Intelligence; and Smart Cities which are interconnected with all facets of their operation. If you are interested here is a brief blog article on the focus of his presentation: https://www.belden.com/blog/smart-building/technology-buzzwords-fit-form-function . To conclude, he cautioned us to – make decisions right for you; don’t get what you don’t need and don’t be snowed by technology buzzwords. Kathleen O’Connor thanked the speaker for his interesting presentation. |
