Bulletin for April 13th, 2017

Bulletin for Thursday April 13th.

Better late than never.

Hope you all had a lovely Easter filled with family, friends and of course chocolate!

Meeting opened with Bryce welcoming back many or our snowbirds followed by the Roy Cooper show for the opening ceremonies.  A rousing O Canada by the self proclaimed tone deaf Rod! Well done.

Guests were Kevin Davis fro the Brantford Sunrise club

Sumant Anthwal- a guest of Richard Pass

Erik and Brent Bily our outbound student and his father and of course Wiktor.

A few district announcements:

District training on April 22nd and the 3 part Leadership training on May 12th. Details and registration can be found on the District site.

May 12th is a four club social at Shoeless Joes  - more detains to follow. Last but not least the 46th annual Lobster Fest at Central Arena is being held on May 27th

Kevin Davis talked to us about his club's Mud Run- similar to the Tough Mudder competition being held on June the 10th.  He is looking for individual and teams to participate. It is a fundraiser for his club.  I know mud baths are very beneficial but ya no thanks.........

Wiktor had a busy week making some money for his trip across Canada, dining with Prya and friends and hiking with his outdoor class where they managed to lose 2 students. A happy ending though- everyone home safe and sound.

Our SAA took to the podium announcing his Master's pool winners and losers. Wayne Gowan won 100.00 and Elliott who was strong armed into participating placed dead last! Rod also complained about people's hand writing on the pool sheet and fined Robert Martin 2$ and in a twist of fate fined Richard Pass for being early!!!!

Rod was auditioning for a job in marketing and P/R with United Airlines providing some inspirational motto's.

If we can't beat the competition we beat  our customers.

Fight of Flight- let us surprise you.He also recognized the involvement of our many new member s in our activities and rewqrded them with Easter eggs.

Lots of Happy $$$

Rob for the success of Camp Enterprise.

Dana because her planters and baskets look very springlike and are blooming.

Bob Martin- hoping that his Blue Jay sweater will b noticed int he crowd at the game in hopes of kick starting the team.  ( note to self Bob- didn't seem to work!)

Karmel for running the Around the Bay Race for the 4th time.

Kevin- our visitor for a new baby born to his daughter in Whitehorse the day before.

bill Clarkston - because breakfast is better here than at the club in Florida

Lawrence- doing the Hike for the Hospice on May 27th if you would like to sponsor him.

Catherine for being thankful for being alive after a close encounter with the oblivious Wayne Gowan on Eagle Dr.

Rob proceeded to outline a new sponsorship alliance between the Golf Committee and Lakeside Committee. It is not set in stone but sets the stage for some great opportunities. More details to follow.

Jamie introduced our guest speaker -our own Armin Ghazi. Armin took a circuitous route to Burlington having lived in Louisville,St Louis, Spain  and most recently in Charlotte . Having met Mohammed Ali he continued to connect with greatness in his travels. Toasted ravioli in St Louis,, soccer while at University in Spain, Jumpin' Joe Carter in Toronto  and I forget the rest!

He is the founder and President of SSG Managed Technology Services, an IT consulting firm serving clients in the GTA as well as North and South Carolina.

Love precipitated his move to Burlington as his wife Sanaz  is from Montreal and he has family in the GTA.  Armin and Sanaz and their two sons, 2 and 4, have been here for two years now.

As a frequent traveller and of Persian descent he became concerned about the chances of being profiled and taken into secondary inspection at the border and of the ability of border agent to take your phone and find out all about your life. He carries confidential information  and security sensitive data on his phone and in essence would have to alert all his clients of a security breach which could result in the end of his business.

The number of phone searches has increased 5 fold to 25,000 last year . While that doesn't seem to be a large number it is still alarming. Most of us think we have nothing to hide but then we started thinking about it and the ramifications are scary. Technology allows a total dump of EVERYTHING- every website you have searched., every picture that you have taken and the list goes on.

He provided 5 options from worse to best.

1. Refuse- not a great idea

2 Rent a device when you get to your destination- time consuming and an nuisance

3 Shop your device- again a logistical nightmare

4 Wipe and re-load your device after backing up to the cloud

5. Your best bet- use a burner phone or to her devices for communication

Some advanced strategies:

 Factor authentication

Cloud Services and Remote access

Unlock  fingerprint unlock.

Armin often speaks to trade groups and other associations on cyber-security and privacy issues and I can see why.Thank you Armin for  an informative and humourous talk on a very serious topic. Oh for the days of the rotary dial landline..................

That's all for now!
