Mentors and mighty deeds.
It might have gone unnoticed; President Bryce was in announcement mode while Past President Roy Cooper was in mid-conversation. Bryce paused, peered over his glasses, took a breath and, Principal to Principal, said firmly, “Roy - I’m speaking!” There was another pause, someone elbowed Roy, and then silence fell.
Here are some of those announcements (without interruption). Lakeside and Partnership Golf committees are going strong. Kathy T. and Sheila W. are heading up Lakeside, Nancy B. and Andrew G. lead the way for golf. Both committees welcome more help.
Johanna H. advised that May is Apeldoorn Month (Apeldoorn is Burlington’s twin city in the Netherlands– and a very fine place it is too.) On May 5th – Canada – Netherlands Friendship Day – there will be a special recognition ceremony at City Hall.
Augustina’s parents arrive April 25th to see just what kind of a place their daughter lives in. They will be staying with Peter & Suzanne Skoretz some of the time before heading off to New York, but Peter seeks one or two willing drivers who would take them around for a day – a working knowledge of Spanish is not essential but would be helpful.
Tuesday of next week – 19th – we have another opportunity to support one of our Lakeside a la Carte restaurants. Meet at Salvatore’s on Lakeshore just west of Brant St.
Ron Lambert introduced our guest speaker, Chris Dooley, teacher , mentor University of Guelph and YMCA basketball coach. Chris has just authored ‘Can’t Miss - The Kevin Pangos Story” and shared with us some of the insights he gained into the personality of Kevin Pangos. Kevin is of course the wunderkind of basketball, just 23, who has played for the Gonzaga Bulldogs of the West Coast Conference, was passed over by NBA teams simply because he wasn’t six foot six inches, but now plays for Herbalife Gran Canaria in Spain.
Kevin grew up in one of those intensely sporting families: hockey, volleyball, soccer and basketball were all the lifeblood of family life. There is much more than my typing skills could ever address about Kevin on line; especially here on Wikipedia.

The way Chris told the story of his own admiration for Kevin’s skills and modesty, how he watched him play and develop was one thing. It was sort of a reverse mentorship; but in our audience today was Scott Ramsay, Allan’s son. Scott is perhaps fifteen and has attended basketball camps at U of Guelph and there fallen under the influence of Chris Dooley the coach and mentor. It was an interesting triangle: Scott, Chris and Kevin; I guess that’s how inspiration grows.
And by the way, Chris will be doing a book signing at Different Drummer Books on May 1st.
