Bulletin October 20th.
A typical East Coast morning according to our President- read cold and crummy.
The meeting was opened by Wayne, Glenn and Anthony and a late submission of the 4 way test by Gerry!
Guests included: Astric Richar, Deirdre Watson, Terry Sedore, Lesley Mansfield, Viktor,John and Phil Evenden and always welcome Nancy Brewer.
Viktor replayed his week which included a Ti-Cat game- enjoyable but didn't really get the rules. Was at the District Conference where he picked up the most signatures in his passport and $15.00 to boot for doing it.
October 24th (today as a matter of fact)- is world Polio Day and there is a get together at the Purple Heather- probably been and gone by the time you get this!
Saturday morning the 29th is the Appleby Line/QEW intersection Clean up starting at 9:00-meet outside Paletta.
The Music Festival is extremely short on volunteers so please sign up and help. It doesn't run without volunteers.
You will have received the link for the Rotary Healthy Check from Nancy- PLEASE take a few minutes to fill it out.
Randy gave us an update on Frederick Dryden and his run. He is running 40K a day- I'm tired just typing that. He will be here in Burlington on November the 4th and there will be a celebratory dinner at Carmen's on November 9th. Please see Randy if you would like to attend.
SAA Rod ran some kind of Canadian history trivia quiz. Everyone had to contribute $2.00. Got that part but the financial rules and regulations passed me by. Anyway lot s of good trivia and hopefully lots of money!!!
Lesley Mansfield was our guest speaker. She is the very energetic Exec. Dir. of The Halton Learning Foundation. The HLF serves as a resource for teachers who encounter situations where students need extra financial help for things like new shoes , field trip support and other incidentals. School principals identify the need and contact the HLF who are able to help. They rely totally on donations and are very excited to announce a Mental Health initiative funded by RBC. They also hand out scholarships from 500.00 to 5,000. They currentyl have a budget of $812,000.
Lesley read us several testimonials highlighting the impact that having something that we take for granted like new shoes can make.
She was very appreciative of our donation through the Golf Tournament in 2008. Very frightening to think that 10% of the 62,000 students under the umbrella of the Halton District School Board live in poverty. Nice to know that they are there to help out when necessary.
Kathy Thomas mentioned the Paul Harris Society Dinner being held here in Burlington for a change. Please contact her for details and date.
Meeting adjourned
Helen Norris and Christians Against Poverty is our speaker this week.
