2016 July 21 Uganda project for D7090.
Where have we seen this before? A new leader, swept into power, takes immediate steps to: 1) increase prices and 2) go on holiday.
Sugar-coated, here’s the news. Your 2016-17 Rotary dues invoice will soon appear in your inbox. Annual dues have been increased ever so slightly to reflect operating costs and the Paul Harris component has been adjusted upwards to accommodate weakness in the loonie. Net effect? – You pay more; President Mike is heading out of town for a while.
Our guests this morning were: Dana Smith (R.C Burlington), Jason Suchaki (g/o Leslie Allison), Joe Richardson (R.C Burlington North) and Jackie Van Lankveld (guest speaker).
PP Bryce took the floor for a few minutes to tidy up some business from last Rotary Year. Vacations stood in the way of anointing last year’s Rotarian of the Year, but better late than never, Bryce honoured Jim Brindle with the award. Jim is truly an under the radar kind of guy. This bulletin comes to you thanks to the technical prowess of Jim, He doesn’t write it, I guess you’d say he publishes it every week. Jim also makes sure the School Breakfast Programme actually happens, he recruits and schedules volunteers for the Rotary Burlington Music Festival and looks after our website. A richly deserved award; thanks Jim!
Lakeside a la Carte is drawing near. Ticket sales are okay-ish at 225 out of a targeted 600. We have been successful in securing sponsorships from Smith’s Funeral Home, RBC and Burlington Taxi.
Our guest speaker was Jackie Van Lankveld, a member of R.C St. Catharines Downtown.
Jackie outlined a project with its origins in a visit to Canada by Margaret Tuhumwire from Entebbe Uganda. Margaret came to meet the Heritage Village Grandmothers charity group based in Vineland who are providing support to Ugandan communities with a disproportionate population HIV-AIDS orphans. The story leads on from there to a joint project between R.C Nkumba (D 9211, Uganda) and clubs in D 7090 to fund the construction of a school near Entebbe. RC Nkumba is taking the lead in developing the school and seeing to it that children of the poorest families, whose parents are unable to pay school fees, get an education. At this end clubs in D 7090 are providing the funding.
