I hate Daylight Savings Time...where is the sunrise......?
Birthday boy Bernard led us in a respectable rendition of the anthem and all but Owen joined in the toast to the Queen!
Guest this morning were Nathan Gowan- who should be an honorary Rotarian by now!!
Karen Candy- Executive -Director of the Carpenter Hospice and our guest speaker.
Yahel, our exchange student.
A big welcome back to Cuppy and Bryce - nice to have you both back!
David asked for a volunteer to update the 4 Club Calendar and as the Secretary CB volunteered. Don't know what it entails but I'm sure I'll find out! Upcoming events are:
- April 7th-Karina Gould, our MP, will be speaking at the Lakeshore lunch club . I assume there will be registration for that.....stay tuned.
- April 25th-Park Clean up at Lowville followed by a BBQ at the park
- May 23rd- Lobsterfest at Central Arena- sponsorship's are available for $300.00
- David commented on CoVid19 and reminded us to be cautious and considerate. There is no Rotary protocol at this time.
Yahel spoke about her Outdoor Education Camp last weekend. Started out quite warm but as the night went on the temperature dropped considerably. One of the teachers suggested a quick hike at 1:00 a.m. to warm up but the howl of the coyotes quickly put the kibosh on that! All in all an enjoyable weekend. She attended a soccer game with Karmel who, in typical fashion, was absurdly dressed for the occasion garnering lots laughs on the train platform. However no one was laughing when the ponchos turned out to be incredibly warm and welcome!!!
David took her to her first hockey game in Oakville against the Windsor team- got a little excited when the players blasted into the glass but all for a good cause- Oakville won!
Rob Sybersma gave his bet shot at getting some volunteers for Camp Enterprise being held on April 30 to May 3. He is looking chaperones and made it so sound so appealing he should have people banging down his door!!!! Please contact him if you are interested.
April 30th is the Hike for the Hospice as well
Rod took to the stage and as always entertained us by matching the existing Rotary Rides teams with visual icons for each. Andrew Gaydon wins the prize though as the image for his Pedal Pushers team defies description........
Editors Note: Rotary Rides
Happy $$$$
An ever humble Robert Martin received a very prestigious award from the Halton Law Society. Congratulations Bob!
Bryce tried to explain his team name He was out with his father-in law named Hewitt at a restaurant on Casey Key in Florida and somehow out of that meal came Casey Hew-Leggs........I only report the news.......
Rene celebrated his father's 88th birthday
Gerry was desperate for something to watch and landed on the Rugby 7's which Andrew is attending . Happy to report that Canada won a bronze. Does he not have Netflix?
CB is taking a common sense approach to the CoVid 19 crisis by accumulating wine -delighted that one of her favourite brands was on sale for 7 bucks off and happy to drive around picking it up!. I can buy a lot of toilet paper with those savings!
Lots of banter about matching pledges for the Rotary Rides and who would be a slave to who- I lost track. Yahel has sent a very good note to all of us soliciting support and you are encouraged to use the template and do the same. We are still looking for teams/ We are at 9K give or take and have 32 riders- a ways to go so please give it some serious thought! Trust me you do not have to be an athlete!
Karen Candy the Executive Director of the Carpenter Hospice was our guest speaker today.
She provided us with and update on the Community Engagement Campaign 2019-2020.
She thanked Rotary for our ongoing support and referred to us a part of the family.
Currently they have 380 outreach partners, 7500 community partners and provided a ton of hours of bereavement counselling . They are looking a further ways to reach out to the community.
Angelo and Darlene Paletta graciously contributed to the 10,000 square foot addition that will contain 10 beds with the capacity to go to 13 along with 24/7 nursing support and care coupled with greater privacy. All of the new rooms contain fireplaces and have direct access to the outside.
In addition the McKeil family has announced a 750K matching grant for the expansion of the Family Palliative Care Outreach. The Hospice is hoping to expand those services by 400%
On Friday September the 13th of last year a fire suppression hose let go and 40,000 gallons of water filled the basement and first floor. Their insurance company was wonderful and they hope that today they will get an occupancy permit to move back home.
They are grateful to the hospital for accommodating the patients in an unused hospital wing and the Paletta development group for providing administrative space.
The hospice has purchased St.Stephen's church next door- the original donor of the land-for the Hospice for future development.
Currently the government funds 46% and fundraising balances it out. They need to raise 1.5 million annually from the community to maintain services.
Bob Martin thanked Karen for her presentation and reiterated the importance of the Hospice in our community
Our guest speaker next week is Dr. Graham Swanson who will speak on end of life care....I'm detecting a theme here.......
Cheers!
