Bulletin for June 2nd, 2016
While this morning’s meeting got off to its normal start, I have to comment on the singing of O Canada.
Sheila Welham was responsible for this part of the show but delegated it to our 2 exchange students on hand.  While they made a valiant effort in this regard, I guess they didn’t have the booming voice required to lead a bunch of Rotarians who hadn’t cleared their throats at this time of the morning. The result was the worst rendition of our national anthem I have ever heard – and there have been a few bad ones at this Club’s meetings over the many years I have attended.

Guests

Bill Leggitt – Member of Burlington North Club;
Augustina Perez Savcedo – our exchange student from Argentina;
Camilla Izquierdo – our outbound exchange student;
Pricilla Barzola – Camilla’s mom;
Greg Kitzul – Camilla’s dad.

Announcements

Sheila Welham and Kathy Thomas provided a lengthy presentation on Lakeside a la Carte.  They went into the history of how Lakeside got started with an idea from Bernie Scrivener to the fact that over $750,000 has been raised since its inception in 1999.  They showed us a video that was developed a couple of years ago to get everyone excited about supporting this important fundraiser. This can be found on the web site for Lakeside http://www.lakesidealacarte.com/about

Kathy Thomas said that this would be her last year being involved with the project (she’s retiring) and Sheila wants to reduce her involvement so they asked one, two or more members of the Club to step up and express interest in taking over their roles in this important fundraiser. They should do this now so they can get first-hand experience this year in order that they can take over the operational aspects of the project next year.

Bryce asked everyone to bring in their grocery coupons which then can be given to the food bank for them to cash in when buying food.

July 6th is the date of the joint 4 club Bar B Q meeting hosted by the Burlington North Club on Miller Drive north of Dundas Street off Guelph Line.  It replaces our normal morning meeting that week.  Let Bryce know if you plan to attend.

Bill Leggitt was on hand to promote their fundraiser Drive Supercars for Rotary. Here you can drive a Ferrari, Lamborghini or McLaren car for $300 per ride (Bill said the cost was $250 but the web site says otherwise??)  https://rotarysupercar.com/   There is a coach with you while you whirl around a racetrack and experience maybe a thrill of a lifetime.  The date of the event is June 18th, the day before father’s day but ladies are welcome too.

Andrew Gaydon spoke on our other main fundraiser – the Golf Tournament which he co-chairs with Nancy Brady. He reported that they have only a few foursomes left to fill but they need sponsors to make the event a huge success. He asked each member of the Club to bring in a hole sponsor of $200 to this project.

Sheila Welham made a request for Student Exchange Host Parents.  Please help Sheila out here folks.

Dimitre Atanassov, who is in charge of the Rotary Music Festival, made a request for volunteers and sponsors.  Please help our newest member out in this regard.

Report from Augustina

Augustina said she met with other exchange students last weekend for the last time which was sad as she would probably never see most of them again in the future. She went to school all week – a first for awhile apparently. She also played a game which combined a Frisbee with some sort of ball like an octopus – “she had fun”.

Sergeant at Arms – Bernie Hannah

Bernie raised funds despite screwing up the names of several people. Notable among the comments were Bernie wondering why Richard Pass was not late today – (what is going on in his life?); Dave Beckett married 38 years; Eric Anderson going on an International Rotary Golf junket to play golf at St. Andrews in Scotland and Gerry Willard is marrying off his son.

Guest Speaker – Camilla Izquierdo – our outbound exchange student

Camilla gave a dry run of her presentation she will make to the Rotary Club in Italy that will host her. Suggestions and comments from club members are always useful to her at this point. She told about Burlington and the surrounding district, about Ontario and about Canada as well as her family & friends.

Camilla recounted why she was interested in being an exchange student.  This was the result of an exchange student from France staying at their home for a month. She is going to a small town of 3,000 people on Lake Garda which is a few KM east of Milan, in the north of Italy.

Camilla spoke about the impact of Rotary on her life – it gave her inspiration, confidence in herself, maturity and she has appreciated the close relationships she has gained through Rotary.
She thanked the Club for giving her this chance to participate in the exchange program.  She is leaving in early September.

Following a number of positive comments and complements on Camilla’s presentation as well as suggestion on how Camilla could improve content, Dimitre Atanassov thanked Camilla for her presentation.
