“Rotary Youth Exchange is the opportunity of a lifetime for the more than 8,000 students who participate each year. By sharing their own culture and embracing a new one, they help foster global understanding-and learn a great deal about themselves and their home country in the process”.
Our meeting this morning centred on the topic “Why We Love Youth Exchange” from the perspective of Rotarians, inbound and outbound students, and host families. But first the business at hand…
Our guests included Juliette, our exchange student; Cameron Osler, guest of Bernie S.; Jan Bara, RES; Julie Cordasco, RBN; Jeff Woods, RBN; Jorge Subia RBN; Margaret Hayes, RCBL; Debbie Chou, RCBL; David Bull, RCS; Heather Mackay; Paul Pettit; Charmaine and Tristen Thomas.

Juliette updated us on her busy week which included a move to a new host family, participation in the London Calling Fashion Show, weekend in Meaford with the Rutty’s and other adventures. She is testament to the value of our youth exchange program.

Welcome Cameron Osler as a new member of RBC!
Jamie E. introduced our guest speaker Dean R. by sharing his experiences with the program, wonderful memories and lasting relationships. Dean presented us with a video he created of seven former exchange students. Throughout, testimonials and stories from parents of exchange students and host families, truly demonstrated to all of us the impact and value of the youth exchange program. Here are some quotes:
Katri- “I built lasting friendships and I am now a lot happier. Thank you for the great experience.”
Sheila, host parent and mom of student- “it is a true passion.”
Moe- “it changed my life!”
Heather Mackay, host parent-“Rotary helped to shape my daughter and it was an experience shared by the whole family. Our hearts bloomed. Diversity is something to lean into and embrace. It was a treasured and rich experience.”
Owen, host parent- “feels amazing to have this person in your home and being a bit of a tourist. It is a joy-just do it as it is the most amazing experience.”
Student- “opened me to new things and people-an opportunity to travel the world. It means the world to me.”
Brazil, 1991, student-“24 years later I am still touching base. Family connects everyone. I am now a Rotarian and a host father. It is a special experience.”
Javiera- “I tried to live my old life but it didn’t fit. My entire life changed. I learned home is anywhere we feel loved- a real eye opener. I am now capable of loving those differences.”
In closing, Dean shared our new inbound is from Argentina and her name is Augustina. The recent Food Falooza organized by the students raised $1400 . They are sharing the proceeds between Polio Plus and Nepal. Of 50 Rotary Clubs only 16 are involved in Youth Exchange-there is a need, based on the video and testimonials- that we should dedicate and commit to ‘keeping the program alive and well.” To help with this goal, members were asked to complete the questionnaire. Rob S. thanked him and presented our symbolic pineapple.
Dates to remember: May 14-Community Services Awards Breakfast and June 17 is the President Induction. More will be provided on this event.
