Today’s meeting had numbers on each table. No one I spoke to knew what they meant - more on that later.
Guests
Hayley Welham – guest of Sheila
Francisco Hernandez – former exchange student from Venezuela
Steve Mazza – Guest Speaker
Announcements
Doug Brown handed out Offence Declaration Forms and quite a few, if not most, were filled in & returned to him at the meeting.
There was an announcement of the upcoming Burlington Bandits playoff game which was outlined in two emails to all members shortly after the meeting.
The meeting on August 13th will be an evening meeting at Jamie Edwards’ home, located at 31 Lakegate Drive, Stoney Creek. Directions, take QEW to Centennial Park Exit, go north towards the lake, turn right onto the North Service Road, turn left at Drakes Drive & turn right onto Lakegate Dr. Volunteers are needed to help out.
Nancy Brady will be in contact with our outbound student (Trista Thomas) in Peru so if you have ideas, thoughts or wishes you want to pass on, give them to her as she is the main conduit to our exchange student.
Nancy Brady also is selling tickets to a fundraiser to purchase a machine which gives faster results relating to Breast Cancer detection. Tickets are $20 each.
Eric Anderson mentioned that he was taking orders for flags (mainly 3X5 ft) but he will take orders for any size or any country.
A donation was made by the Club to the Carpenter Hospice of behalf of Cam Rothwell.
Kathleen Dubeau was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship by Catherine Brady.
Lakeside a la Carte
Hayley Welham has Lakeside Raffle Tickets.
Sheila stated that only 357 tickets had been sold and requested Club Members to sell, sell, sell. Help her out folks. A volunteer sheet was circulated to help out with the operation of Lakeside. If you were not at the meeting and can help, let Sheila know.
Lesley Allison made an appeal for Silent Auction items for Lakeside. Let her know if you can help out in this regard.
Volunteers are needed to help serve wine for a couple of wineries who couldn’t spare staff.
A diamond necklace donated by Williams Jewelers is available at the Silent Auction.
Gerry Willard stated that there was a small problem with the online purchasing system for Lakeside but it has been fixed.
Eric Anderson gave a few tips on how to sell tickets such as to your golf buddies or business contacts.
Sergeant at Arms
Sergeant Bernie handed out fines and increased the total towards his budget big-time today. Among his gleanings was a fine to Jim Brindle for bad selection of photos (Jim now takes the photos and decides which photo to use when & where as he also sends out the Bulletin because Clubrunner is too complicated for us scribes to figure out and we can take longer to send it out than to write it). Jim’s retort was that photos don’t lie but he had to pay anyway.
Jamie gave a brief rundown of his trip with Sherry on his motorcycle down through Quebec and into the Maritimes provinces and back
Bernie expressed amazement that he was also listed on the Duty Roster as he is exempt when S at A (same applies to scribes as well as the President of the Club). Someone, forget who, paid the price for that gaff.
Exercise For Strategic Plan
We finally found out what those numbers were for that were on our tables at the start of the meeting. We had been sent by email a copy of the Goals & Directions for the 2015-16 Rotary Year earlier in the week and were supposed to think about them and comment or ask questions about them at this meeting. However, discussion would be limited to two tables only. A Board Member “rotated” between tables to answer questions.
Next week we are to sit at the same numbered table so everyone gets a chance to comment.
Guest Speaker – Steve Mazza, Artist
Steve was introduced by Ron Lambert who researched his web site before the meeting and was able to give a fair bit of background. The web site that Ron probably looked at is shown here along with photos of his work.
http://www.the-art-house.ca/Steve_Mazza.php
He has been involved as an artist for 15 years.
He now specializes in 3-D art.
Steve started out working with clay sculptures, initially at Dundas Valley School of Art as a youngster.
He became known as the Rabbit man as he had sculptures of, say a rabbit with clothes on, trapped in a 9-5 job or a rabbit sitting on a toilet (not sure what that signified).
He explained why he switched from clay to lighter materials as he often had the large sculpture suspended from the ceiling and this resulted in too much weight on ceilings.
He started using Styrofoam.
He moved into digital art and started doing large projects for cruise ships, theaters, etc.
He made his own 3-D printer from plans on the internet and with this printer was able to produce sculpture pieces which he pieced together to form a larger art form (sort of the way people can make a working gun made of plastic using instructions taken off the internet). The printer uses a hot glue gun to produce the individual art segments.
He has sculptures of factories with smoke appearing to be coming out of the smokestacks.
He graduated to larger and larger commercial 3-D printers using CAD (computer assisted design).
He can now scan people and from that produce a mold of their bust.
Steve was thanked by Catherine Brady – an artist in her own right.
