Bulletin for February 27th, 2020
Bulletin for February 27 2020

In spite of the weather close to 30 hearty souls showed up for our last meeting of the month. President Roscoe congratulated Dave Beckett on driving in from the farthest point but was roundly chastised for not knowing his geography about poor Allan Ramsay. In fact Ramsay drove 18.7 km to the meeting and Beckett a whopping 20.5. I think our humble president needs an apology from all those hecklers.

Mae lead us in a version of Oh Canada. Still not quite all the correct words from some of our members. It is “IN ALL OF US” as the sons have been retired. Five bucks from each of you old guys who forget next week might make Mae happier. It would also be easier than learning the words to “The Maple Leaf Forever” or “God Save the King”.

Guests (?) included our very own Yahel, Wayne’s son and chauffeur Nathan Gowan, and an actual visitor Larry Chester from the Rotary Club of Oakville.  Larry was here to let us know about the FIFTH ANNUAL SPEAKER SERIES presentation on April 28 at 6 pm at 540 Lakeshore Road West in Oakville.  The speaker is the Rt. Hon. Beverley McLachlin, P.C. This fantastic speaker and wonderful human being (to quote our own Robert  Martin) is the longest serving Chief Justice in Canadian history, an author, and champion for all Canadians. Tickets are still available at rotaryclubofoakville.ca for the nominal sum of $55 including wine and h’or douvers. I hope that someone is available to take Yahel to this event (perhaps Owen?) as it would be a wonderful chance to see some true Canadian history.

Tuesday evening was a fantastic dinner at SAVING TYME arranged by Rod Collard. In true Rotary fashion 12 people were registered a week ago (and Rod begged for more participation), 24 finally confirmed, and then 32 showed up. Perhaps the 8 extras could send a personal apology to the over stressed Rod and buy the wonderful lad a beer or three. But the food was fantastic! Do a google review if you could to help out the restaurant, who have been a Lakeside supporter for years.

Social dinners:. Wait for an update from Rod. A way to enjoy the company of your fellow Rotarians AND support our gracious partners from Lakeside.

Sheila Welham let us know about an upcoming Roteract event on March 15th from 1 pm to 4 pm somewhere doing a trivia quiz. All brainiacs are invited (Leslie, Deanne, Owen, etc). Please contact Sheila for details and for pricing.

RYLA is on again on April 26 to May 1st . This is a fantastic opportunity for young people aged 18 to 26. If you know of some-one who you think could benefit from the experience and be interested please contact Karmel or Mr. Fakesugar or the fantastic assistant to both Ms.Sheila for more details. Time is of the essence so make your recommendations really quickly.

Peter Thoem is taking over as the Speaker Chief effective immediately.  He has a Carpenter for next week followed by a couple of Blanks. He would like to replace the blanks so please think about…a great guest speaker…yourself to do a classification talk about who you are and what you have done and what you currently do…a favourite charity of yours who is looking to let us know what they do…Be creative !

Yahel then updated us with her activities over the past two weeks… Valentine’s Day party with Mae… moving to her new home on Saturday with 2 brothers (one very quiet and one not so much so)…a long hike some-where near Glenn Eden…skiing at Glen Eden with a couple of really novice skiers (and Yahel from Switzerland!)…Saturday morning at Cora’s…Niagara Falls with Nilha and her 3 kids who obviously need some geography lessons... attending a semi-formal dance for the First time…group chats with Camp Wanikita participants (too much of these I think was the general thought). I got very tired just listening to all the activities.

Rod was then up. He fined Bob Martin for impersonating Mr. Rogers (or Mr. Dress-up or Mr. T…not sure which), Keith for looking like Nanuk of the North, all men with a beard (or some semblance of one like Sean), Peter Thoem for being incredibly intimidating (our sweet Peter?). Fun as always…and profitable for the club. Thanks Rod!

What is the Rotary Rides? Our next major Fund Raiser! Friday April 17th.

The site is fully operational – check it out, sign up or donate.

Our speakers today were our own Rod Collard and then that famous comedian Glenn Warnica. Quite the tag team. Bryce Leggatt has spear-headed this fun(d) raising event with the goal of raising $25,000 for the Burlington Food Bank and Rotary causes. All you have to do is sit on a bike for 30 minutes (a stationary bike at that) and get some people to sponsor you. The Schumcks are Rod, Don Cassidy, Karl Sury and some other Schumck. Feel free to go on-line and sponsor them if you do not want to ride.

Joe Watson is also on a team and has graciously decided to give a $100 bottle of wine to every Rotarian who raises more money than his team does. He will also be the personal slave (his words, not mine in this new age of political correctness except for politicians) for the rest of the Rotary year to the first place fund-raiser. Go Catherine!

Jamie Edwards seems to have scooped some incredible athletic talent for his team.

Glenn gave us a demonstration on how easy the web site is to use…or will be after they fix all the bugs.  Titanic is Glenn’s password. A great endorsement for the Ships or Trips business https://www.shipsortrips.com/.

And of course Glenn Warnica has Yahel on his team Three times!  That proves how easy the web site is to use.

There will hopefully be 96 individuals taking part in this event. A $1,500 gift certificate from Rock and Road Cycle http://rockandroadcycle.com/ will be given out at the end of the event. A super contribution from a great Rotary sponsor.

The Burlington Food Bank is our major charity for this event. They support over 1,000 families every month.

Thanks guys. A very entertaining and informative talk. Please come to the table and get a team going…get on a team…sponsor the event and get your name put on the back of 96 T Shirts (join up with Access Storage aka Ron Lambert, Edwards Real Estate and some other great Rotary sponsors)…PARTICIPATE ANY WAY YOU CAN!
