Stories

What started as a pretty quiet, somewhat morose morning in the curling hangar (that venue just doesn’t seem to inspire much fun), ended up as a dark comedy. More on that later.

s- Juliette (for one last time…L), and Dave Lafleur

Pres. Catherine (for one last time…J…JK…L) announced that the club made a donation to the Carpenter Hospice in the name of Leona Stojanovich, who passed away this week. She also received thank you notes from Talking Tales and Halton Learning Foundation.

Many thanks to Glenn and Rose Warnica for hosting a tremendous going away party for Juliette. Apparently Catherine arranged the perfect weather.

Ron Lambert introduced us to a possible short-term fundraising opportunity-pouring Nickelbrook beer at the “It’s Your Festival” event in Gage Park on the weekend of July 9-12. Potential profit is up to $10,000, but would involve two or more 6-8 hour shifts. After much discussion and a show of hands, Ron concluded that although there is support for the idea, there is not quite enough to make it happen on such short notice. He will continue to investigate though.

Sgt. Rene (for one last time…J…NK…)
Rene thanked the club for pushing him over the edge (literally) in his fundraising for the rappelling event at Stelco Tower.
Doug Brown also thanked the club for helping raise $2000 for JDRF.

Happy Dollars:
Rod Collard for moving his 93 yr old mother into a retirement home; Bryce Leggatt for Rene doing such a great job as sergeant; Karmel Sakran for thinking that Juliette only has eyes for him; Eric Anderson for taking his .....2 youngest grandchildren to Hilton Head; Mae Radford for the Roy Stojanovich shovel story; Duncan Hart for his 55th wedding anniversary (which then reminded Bill Clarkson that it is his 49th).

Pres. Catherine then attempted to introduce the guest speaker, but a loud murmur from the crowd made her realize she had forgotten to let Juliette speak on her last day. Juliette has been very busy these past couple weeks, trying to pack as much in as possible: she went up to Dean’s cottage with 6 other exchange students where they had an emotional campfire and jumped off the Thornbury pier into an icy Georgian Bay; learned Thai boxing; had a pool party; went to the Sound of Music and MMVAs; had a flight with John Stairs over Niagara Falls; visited Wild Water Works; and finally had a great going away party hosted by the Warnicas where the club gave her a beautiful necklace. She thanked everyone for their kindness, friendship and support, and promises to return soon. She damn well better, that’s all I can say!

OK, that was the civilized part of the meeting. Catherine introduced Mike Molloy to show a video put out by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, but alas, computer problems put an end to that little show very quickly. So incoming President Bryce jumped to the podium to talk about the coming year and thank outgoing President Catherine for a great year. He recognized the contribution of outgoing board members Sheila Welham, Peter Skoretz and PP Glenn Warnica. Bryce will present the formal goals of his administration in two weeks time, but reminded everyone that success depends on you.

OK, now for the dark comedy- during the meeting, a card was being passed around to be signed by members. Many (including me) thought it was a bon voyage card for Juliette. In fact it was a Get Well card for Cam Rothwell (Karmel’s use of the word “Camy” doesn’t seem as inappropriate now). Lucky for us Cam has a great sense of humour, so he won’t be offended by comments like “We will miss seeing your lovely face at the meetings when you are gone,” or “Loved getting to know you, sorry to see you go.” Seeing President Catherine rolling on the floor in laughter was the perfect ending to a perfect year…J…NK…and
GET WELL CAM, we aren’t letting YOU go anywhere!!
