 Bulletin for July 19th, 2018

Bulletin July 19th.

Guest this morning were Fareem Sanji for Burlington North who just came to say hi! Kevin Leung-Lawrence's' son who would go on to provide a terrific and timely presentation- and Kari, our outbound student who was presented with a club banner to take to Taiwan.

Nice to see Rick Howarth back - but not for long- leaving again but always nice to see you Rick. Say hi to Fay!

Opening ceremonies were handled by Jim, Roy and Mae who was looking for the toast this morning and had to be reminded  that for 12 bucks toast was off!!

Today is the Golf T ornament - happy to report that everything was under control including the weather and that we were only short one or two players. As I am writing this on Monday I can confirm that indeed it was a wonderful day and we received tons of positive comments and 2  new foursomes confirmed for next year!  Well done folks!

Lakeside tickets are moving well! Please remember to buy them early as we will have a cut-off number and date. AND we are really trying to push pre- event raffle ticket sales so if you haven't asked for a book please do so to see if we can capitalize of the potential $26 000 in revenue!

Mae, our newly appointed SAA, took to the podium and fined those who hadn't volunteered for either of our two fundraisers  or had not brought wine for the two  wine fridges . She announced Kathleen O'Connor as the Rotarian of the week for her silent but steady support of our many program including Youth Exchange. Congratulations Kathleen!

She then opened it up to happy dollars:

Kathleen is looking forward to an outing at Dean's on July the 29th and looking for a show of hands as to who was attending. Regrettable some  did not read the e-mail correctly and failed to respond but it is not too late! Please contact Kathleen if you intend on going.

Dave Beckett and Patty just returned from London where they were lucky enough to see James Taylor, Paul Simon and Bonnie Raitt. What a powerhouse! I'm jealous!

David Roscoe, our PE, is proud that his daughter Vanessa will be playing in the Ontario Beach Volleyball Championships on the Ontario team this weekend. Go Vanessa!

Glenn was happy for the fellowship of this club that has resulted in a 100 km bike ride this week. I guess we all have different definitions of fellowship- wine and a patio anyone? Have fun! Ride safely!

Sheila told the story of Abraham, his jacket, the airport, and UBER .I'll leave it up to you to guess what happened.....................

David Dean introduced our guest Dr.. Kevin Leung who,  in his quest for knowledge, has a Bus. Admin. degree for Western University, a medical degree from Queen's, A specialization in urology from McGill and a sub specialty in urological oncology from the U of T. Exhausted just typing all that.   He then decided it was probably time to make some money , much to Lawrence and Chi Ling's delight, and is currently  at Credit Valley, a part of the Trillium group.

Dr. Kevin Leung HBA MD FRCSC gave us an immensely informative presentation on Prostate Cancer and it's treatment.

MRI is still the preferred method of screening, diagnosis, surgical planning and surveillance. The machines continue to improve every day using stronger magnetic coils that. Unfortunately there are not enough MRI's to service the many needs.

There is a new method of diagnosis called PSMA which stands for Prostate Specific Membrane Antigen.

They attach a therapeutic antigen to a heat seeking molecule which sources the cancer and eradicates it. It is currently in the experimental stage  in Heidelberg and Montreal  and has yet to get approval but

looks very promising.

Robotic surgery is now the Gold standard in surgical procedures and in fact is used almost 100% of the time in the US. It is very expensive and is not used as widely in Canada. It is less invasive, requires a few more but smaller incisions and only requires one to 2 days in the hospital. The robot mimics the hands movements but is more precise . This technology is also used for hysterectomies as well

There are lots of new drugs available that help boost the survival rate as well as new diagnostics.

The first PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test should be at  age 50 and end at 75.

Unfortunately a US diagnostic review panel decided that the PSA was not a valuable test which provided much consternation among doctors and their patients. This however was reviewed and screening is still considered the most important tool in fighting Prostate Cancer.

A truly interesting presentation to a very relevant audience.  Many questions followed.  A very proud moment for our President!

As a member of the medical field  our donation of 200 polio vaccines was well received.

Meeting adjourned.
