Bulletin December 3rd 2015

OMG it’s dark!  But the morning was brightened by our own Johanna, Jamie and Randy to start the morning followed by another bright note the induction ( or inducing as we tend to refer to it as!) of a new member Dick Scott by none other than District Governor Will Pugh.

Dick is an old friend of Rod Collard’s and worked in Education along with Rod and did a stint at my old alma mater OTHS. He is originally from Sault Ste. Marie but spent most of his life here in the sunny south, St. Catharines in particular. Hockey was a big part of his life in the early years and can brag that he has played with the likes of Stan Makita and Gerry Cheevers. After the charge was red Will invited the club up to welcome Dick tour club- a very nice touch.

Guests today:  Dick Scott, Dimitre Atanassov, Elliott Vine, Will Pugh and of course Agustina.

Announcements:

Santa Claus parade on Sunday-kinda of irrelevant now but check the website for some great shots!

The Christmas parties- the adult one is cancelled and the Children’s party with Santa is on December 17th. Please provide a head count for us on the 10th.

Poinsettia sales have been very good with the last being delivered on this Thursday. Thanks to everyone who has sold and has helped deliver.

Rotary as a group is working on the Syrian refugee crisis and more information will be available soon.

Agustina reported a busy weekend socializing-No school on Friday so she took the opportunity to sleep in. Remember those days- probably not! She went to a concert with “funny clothes and singing”- direct quote -and on Sunday was at Rosita’s house for Thai food.

Next up our 1/3 time SAA Jamie who was in fine form. Opened the show with stories of showering with DG Will at the Y and it went downhill from there. He tried to play his own version of True Confessions. Didn’t go so well- as if any of us are going to confess to anything and give them further fodder for next week!

Andrew’s lost phone, Randy’s curling win and my Mom’s new car rounded out Jamie’s session- hopefully he made enough money to keep Bernie happy!

Next up was DG Will Pugh who is always a delight to hear speak.   After being introduced by Barb He opened with “not really sure what I am supposed to do as DG so here we go!”

He spoke to the challenge issued by the RI President to be a gift to the world.  How we all need to use what we have and share what we can. Join when you can and remember that you are part of the family of Rotary and that we do make a difference. He encouraged us all to war our pins to start the conversation about Rotary and when asked what Rotary is he gave us the answer- we are community leaders taking action to make our communities better.
He pointed to the Polio Plus campaign as an example of what one idea can turn into. One man in one city in Philippines vowed to stop polio in his town. It quickly spread to 2 cities, then 3 than all of the Philippines and then the rest of the world. One man - one idea. He challenged us to come up with our one idea.
RI has 3 priorities this year.
  1. Strengthen all of our clubs
  2. Strengthen our Foundation in order to support projects
  3. Speak to the world as one voice - one Rotary.
Will closed by saying that he was going to be the longest serving DG due to the fact that next year is a leap year and I personally was happy to hear that. Well done Will!

Ron echoed those sentiments in his thank you and quite appropriately presented him with the certificate for polio vaccines.

Meeting adjourned. Speaker next week is Henry Dekker from JBH to give us a hospital update.
