Amarok Society
Mar. 15, 2018
Overseas, Amarok Society has seen real success in our model for bringing lasting change to an overlooked education crisis. We’ve done this by helping some of the poorest women in the world become catalysts of sustainable change in the world around them. But Canada faces its own education crisis, which is also overlooked, and which also must be addressed through a spirit of innovation. Through their work in First Nations education, Amarok Society founders, Dr. Tanyss and Gem Munro have witnessed the serious educational disadvantages afforded to our Indigenous youth right here at home, with significant repercussions. Education deficits have a ripple effect to other areas, as evidenced by the gap between Indigenous populations and the average Canadian populations in health, income, justice, and social issues. There is likewise a serious gap between the equality we Canadians say we stand for, and the reality of life for most Indigenous youth. Amarok Society is opening a new chapter – Amarok Society Indigenous – which will ultimately establish a month-long leadership academy for indigenous youth, beginning with workshops of shorter durations where indigenous youth are. Our methodology draws upon Indigenous traditions, history, and culture to create transformative change in students’ lives. Unlocking long-standing impasses through conversation-based workshops, Amarok Society Indigenous leaves youth leaders with an unprecedented capacity to alter their lives and the lives of those around them. We are presently scheduling speaking engagements for your area, and would be very pleased to have the opportunity to speak to the Rotary Club of Burlington Central about our new initiative. My father, Gem, will be in the area in March. Please advise us if it would be possible to arrange for this. Thanks for your consideration, - Gabriel Munro www.amaroksociety.org/wordpres |

Author of five books on First Nations, Inuit and Metis
Mar. 29, 2018
Restaurateur and Author Zig Misiak has written five books on First Nations, Inuit and Metis. In addition to providing curriculum and related support to schools in Ontario and other parts of Canada, Zig’s mission is to familiarize, coach, present, and mentor all those who share his interest in history. He is very clear stating that he speaks about, but not for, the Native Nations and always takes into account both oral and written information, when available, respecting both sources. Zig will be focusing his presentation on his biography of Harold J. Smith better know as Jay Silverheels,(born Harold Preston Smith, May 26, 1912 – March 5, 1980) was a Mohawk Canadian actor and athlete. He was well known for his role as Tonto, the faithful Indian companion of the Lone Ranger in the long-running American western television series, The Lone Ranger. |

The Soup Guy
May 31, 2018
Roger was born and raised in the Hamilton area and now resides in Ancaster. He works full time and is a proud father to his 3 children Courtney, Riley and Ryan. He is married to Janet and now is stepfather to Joshua and Morgan. He works a full time job and spends countless hours on charity work as you will see. While attending Flamborough Baptist Church in September 2016 he felt moved by his pastors message to love God with our whole heart and to find your ministry. He went home and cleaned out his walk in closet of clothes then proceeded to take them directly to the street to hand out. Roger was inspired to continue and expand his ministry from that first meeting. Men’s Street Ministry started with Roger giving out clothes and serving soup in the back of his SUV 2 times per week. The ministry has since grown and fund raised to acquire a trailer for serving and now go out 2 to 4 times per week to the street and make 300 plus sandwiches per week and serve 40 to 80 gallons of soup or chili each week. Roger the soup guy has continued his journey providing hope to the homeless and less fortunate by leading them to Christ and taking them to church. |
