Ed Friedman was born in Des Plains, Illinois, a city of 65,000 just north of O'Hare Airport. Des Plains has one of the original McDonalds. It was just bike ride away. He shared he was introduced to construction at an early age. He was talked about the joys of having a drafting board and tape measurer. He designed his first home at the age of 11. He attended Maine West High School and graduated in 1981. There were over 700 in his graduating class.
In 1982, he joined that Army and spent time in Alabama and Stuttgart Airfield in Germany. He was part of the military police, and flirted with the idea of becoming a police officer, but decided this line of work wasn't for him. While in Europe he enjoyed all the opportunities he had to explore, Germany, France, England, Paris and Belgium.
Once out of the Army, he took a job at Tempel Steel Manufacturing. He worked in the shipping department.
In 1986, he left for Illinois and arrived in the Upper Valley. He started work for Trumbull-Nelson, but left after 2 years to get his college education at NH Technical Community College. In 1996, he returned to Trumbull-Nelson, He then shared photos for building he helped design and build:
