Rotary of Lebanon Club

  • Meeting called to order by Ed Friedman, but it was hard to get our members attention as they were more interested in buying leftover beer from Beer Fest.  If you missed the opportunity to buy beer, there are still many cans left to be sold.
  • Ernst Oidtmann lead us in signing our Rotary welcome song and golden oldie, that predated all of our births.
  • Bruce Pacht lead us in the 4-Way Test.
  • Ed Friedman welcomed our prospective member, Mila Dela Pena. Mila has just retired from Dartmouth-Hitchcock.  She will now be able to attend our meeting starting in November.  Mila belonged to Rotary in the Philippines and is looking forward to joining us as full fledged member.
  • We then enjoyed our buffet lunch.
  • Hank went on the search of Happy/Sad dollars (see below)
  • Ed Friedman inducted Kirk Baird as our newest member.  Kirk was a Rotary member in the Rotary Club of New Haven, CT, USA.
  • Hank then recapped our successful Beer Fest.  Our gross income was $35,876, after expenses he still believes our net income will be between $21,000 and $22,000.  He reminded us that in t he future, getting more sponsors will be the best way to increase our net income for this event. Hank praised the committee who worked to plan the event. We then gave Hank a round of applause for his leadership in coordinating this event.  We thanked Phil Rentz for being our incoming chair for Beer Fest 2023.
  • Bruce Bergeron reminded everyone to make sure they pay him for the beer they want prior to leaving the meeting.
  • David Crandall provided an update on harmony park. He shared pictures of the park design (elements will be in Rotary blue and gold); were it will be located on he Mall in Lebanon (near Village Pizza); and a picture of a 4 foot X 4 foot Rotary sign that was laser cut that will be used to let the public know the park was donated by Lebanon Rotary.  We will have to get a sign permit to place it at the park (the sign should be maintenance free for 20 years). The cost of the park will be $48,875, the sign and installation will cost $5,500 for a total cost of $54,375. This is slightly over our $50,000 budget, but the money available to cover the additional expense. Installation of the part will happen in late April. The 100th Anniversary Committee hopes to have a community gathering (hamburger/hotdog BBQ or an ice cream social to formally dedicate the park in mid-May. They also suggest we have a Rotary celebration of our 100th at Change Over 2023 as the 5th Thursday meeting in June, 2023. If was suggested this be a dinner at a restaurant rather than Harvest Hill.
  • Ed Friedman thanked Tim Guaraldi and and Anna for hosting the President's Picnic. He let us know that he and Shelly were still at Tim's where they say a trailing light in the sign.  They next day, they learned they saw the Space X rocket.
  • Bruce Bergeron reminded us
    • That we sill need one more volunteer for the Listen Dinner.  Please come if you are able to do this.
    • We need 8 volunteers for the Flu Clinic in Enfield.  Please let Bruce know if you can help on October 13th, Thursday from 2 to 6 PM. More info listed below.

HOW SUCCESSFUL HAS THE EFFORT BEEN TO ERADICATE POLIO?

Because of Rotary’s support, nearly 3 billion children have been immunized against polio and are protected for life against this crippling disease.

Rotary and our partners reduced the number of wild polio cases from 350,000 in 1988 to 140 in 2020. Twenty million cases of paralysis have been averted through this global effort.

The wild poliovirus is now endemic in just two countries, and we won’t stop our effort until we’re able to give children a polio-free world.

A new weapon in the fight against polio

A modified polio vaccine, nOPV2, is offering new hope in the fight to eradicate polio. The reengineered formula has a lower risk of causing vaccine-derived poliovirus. This means it is less likely that the weakened strain of poliovirus used in the vaccine will mutate and spur outbreaks in communities where immunization levels are low. The vaccine first rolled out in March 2021. In the first half of 2022, more than 370 million doses have been administered in more than 20 countries. Read more about what went into developing this vaccine or listen to the story on our Rotary Podcast.
