Program - April 25, 2019

Our speaker today was Andrew Winter from Twin Pines Housing Trust.

Andrew Winter

He was accompanied by Michelle Kersey, Director of Development and Communications.

Michelle Kersdy

From Winter's PowerPoint Presentation:
  • Twin Pines was formed in 1990 through the merger of two local housing providers
  • The mission of Twin Pines Housing Trust is to strengthen the Upper Valley community by developing and improving affordable homes for individuals and families, and by supporting our tenants and owners.
  • Currently there 19 Properties offering 417 rental units.  This is an increase of 240 units since 2012. 256 in NH, 161 in VT
  • The organization supports 48 Shared-equity homeownership properties
  • Currently, there are 122 rental units in various stages of development
  • Via Twin Pines there are over 1,000 housed in the properties they own.
  • They have a staff of 19 member staff with expertise in project development, property management, and resident support services.  This is an increased from 8 in 2012

Their Supportive Services team provides essential supports to help residents stay healthy and housed
  • Coordinate case management, social services, food programs, financial coaching, and more
  • Connect residents with area agencies such as LISTEN, the Haven, HCRS, WISE, Tri-County CAP, and Headrest
  • Create new programs where there are gaps
  • 83% of residents in properties we manage utilize Supportive Services, with 58% considered high utilizers

Winter outlined why affordable housing is needed in the Upper Valley:
  • Housing prices are high, especially near core economic centers.
  • Both unemployment and vacancy rates are exceptionally low in the Lebanon NH-VT MicroNECTA:
    • Unemployment rate = 2.1% (Feb. 2019)
    • Vacancy rates < 2% (Nov. 2018)
  • Waiting lists for affordable units often measured in years.
  • Deficit of approximately 5,000 housing units in Upper Valley region.
  • Rent within 10 min. drive of Lebanon:
    • 1 bedroom: $400-$2020, median = $925
    • 2 bedroom: $950-$2700, median = $1650

He shared information about new housing units being built or renovated:
  • Tracy Community Housing, West Lebanon, NH
  • Village at Crafts Hill, West Lebanon, NH
  • Summer Park, Hanover, NH (seniors)
  • Wentworth Community Housing, White River Jct., VT
  • Parkhurst Community Housing, Lebanon (focus…homeless population)
Winter shared that in addition to low or lower income housing.  There is a need for more work force housing.  Bruce Pacht reflected that in the upper valley rental property is often seen as short term housing as compared to how rental property in densely populated cities is seen in a more permanent way.

Rotary International New

From the Council on Legislation (COL):

Report from Ron Bedell, District 7850's Representative:

The COL reviewed and voted on 117 enactments.  Forty-nine enactments were passed (approx. 40% of the total).

Delegates voted to:
  • Support the conversion of Rotary International (RI) from a 501(c)4 to a 501(c)3.  There was a lot of debate about this amendment.  It was support by RI, the Rotary Foundation and the IRS.  When the conversion is completed, your RI dues will be tax deductible.  Clubs will continue to be 501(c)4 organizations.
  •  Rotaract Clubs will become non-dues paying members of Rotary International.
  • Our annual dues will be raised USD$1.00 per year over the next three years.
  • A Rotary Club president can serve no more than two consecutive years.
  • John Hewko, head of the RI Secretariat, title will change from chief operation officer to chief executive officer.
If clubs want to submit resolutions to the COL, they must be submitted and supported by their districts by 30 June 2019.  Enactments for the COL must be submitted by Clubs and supported by Districts by 31 December 2020.

Resolutions are items that clubs want to be referred to the Rotary Board for discussion and vote.  The COL members vote on whether or not the resolution should be forwarded to the board of directors.

Enactments are changes proposed to the RI Constitution and Bylaws and are approved or rejected by COL members.  These are then implemented by the Board of Directors.  Implementation begins on 1 July following the COL

Our Rotary Foundation Dollars at Work
Our club has support many projects done by Walter Hughes. He is an amazing humanitarian and continues to change and save lives in Africa.  Here is the latest update on his work in Ghana, Uganda and Kenya.

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

We've been to Ghana, Uganda and Kenya over the last three months.   We are close to completing several water and sanitation projects in Ghana this year in Bolgatanga, Kumasi, Techiman and Sunyani.

We went to Uganda to honor the late RI President-elect Sam Owori.  We went to Kenya to consider a school to honor the late Dr. Stephen Mecca who invented the Microflush toilet.

Ghana Clean Water Grant 18-72002:  We are finishing the fundraising for our next clean water, sanitation and micro-credit loan project near Kumasi,

Ghana. We are finishing fundraising  & will submit the project to the Rotary Foundation in early May.  We just need your pledge right now of cash and district designated funds.  Thanks for all of your support for this effort. We are looking for pledges right now.  The micro-credit loans will fund wells, toilets, farms and small businesses.  Every club in District 7570 and many in District 7550 raised funds for this project
In Ghana the current focus is on schools, wells and Microflush toilets.  Estate Experimental Preschool (photo right above) and Abansere elementary school were dedicated in Ghana recently.  Nkrankrom & Soronoase elementary schools and Adadease Junction Junior High School are being funded and built this year.  We've exceeded in building over 1,000 Microflush toilets in Ghana.  Here's a video of a Nkrankrom Elementary school in Ghana: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-J-lYis7FWs&feature=youtu.be

In Uganda:  We are installing a solar powered municipal water project in Meriket, Uganda to set up a municipal water system for about 10,000 people.  The project is truly amazing to run water lines in every direction from the city center.  Rotary drilled the high yield borehole.  Most water lines are buried.  The water tank stand foundation is being dug to hold about 10,000 liters of water.  Water will be available at the Meriket central market and every school near town.  Sanitation is being provided at the schools as well.  District Governor George Karnes of D7570 and Jimmy Serugu are leading the project to honor the late Rotary International President-elect Sam Owori.  Here's a video of the kickoff of the solar powered water system in Meriket,

We also trained 48 people to build the Microflush toilet in Meriket, Uganda.  Microflush toilets are spreading to the north, west and east in Uganda over the past year. The benefits Microflush toilets are 1) less expensive to build than a pit latrine, 2) Build once and done instead of every two years for a latrine, 3) There’s no smell, no flies and no malaria from mosquito bites, 4) Use earthworms to breakdown the waste into safe compost and 5) The user interface can be a seat or a squat fixture.   The trainees, the project contractor and site foreman and leaders were impressed with the Microflush toilet.  Men and women from Meriket and Kidera were trained.

In Kenya:  George Karnes and I went to Kenya in March to visit a Maasai community that dreams of having a school.  We love the people and the community.  This school is in the need’s assessment stage. We answered many questions needed to greenlight the school project in Kenya. Here's a video of a potential new school in Kenya's Maasai tribal area:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mD_PobxKwlE

We worshiped at the All Saints Church of Uganda in Kidera on Sunday.  It was wonderful worship experience.  Here's a video of a new church in Kidera, Uganda:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tWVOMgKhoY .  Donors around the USA helped to finish the roof, windows, doors, floors and stucco to honor Sam Owori.

Walter Hughes
