Rotary and ONE, an international advocacy organization, joined other event partners in downtown Chicago on 24 September to demonstrate a commitment to ending extreme poverty and inequality and to promoting action on climate change on the eve of the United Nations launch of its Sustainable Development Goals. The 17 ambitious goals constitute a road map for finding solutions to the world’s most pressing problems, and dovetail with Rotary members’ work to create positive change in their communities and around the world. As dusk fell over Chicago, participants in the Under One Sky event held up...

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on 25 September that Nigeria is now polio-free and has been officially removed from the list of countries where polio is endemic. It’s been 14 months since any cases of polio caused by the wild virus have been detected there. With Nigeria’s historic achievement, polio remains endemic in only two countries: Afghanistan and Pakistan. That means transmission of the virus has never been stopped there. Nigeria was the last country in Africa where polio was endemic. The continent celebrated its own first full year without the disease on 11 August. Once...

Celebrate our remarkable progress toward a polio-free world with the Rotary World Polio Day event, streamed live from New York City on 23 October. Co-hosted by UNICEF, the event will highlight recent milestones: In July, Nigeria marked one year without a case of polio caused by the wild poliovirus, and in August, the entire African continent celebrated one year without a case. Jeffrey Kluger, health and science editor at Time magazine, will serve as moderator, joining other health experts, including UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake and polio ambassadors. The event, which drew 23,000...

People and nations worldwide will observe the International Day of Peace on 21 September, the date designated by the United Nations in 2001 “to be observed as a day of global ceasefire and nonviolence.” That commitment to peace is directly linked to goals pursued by Rotary members since The Rotary Foundation’s mission to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace was proclaimed in 1917. To fulfill that mission, Rotary conducts global forums, hosts international peace symposiums, continues its decades-long collaboration with the UN, and promotes initiatives such as the Rotarian Action...

Speaker:    Dennis Luttrell, new city manager for Lebanon

Connections to the Upper Valley: 1) exposure while traveling back and forth to UVM as a student; 2) lived in Woodstock for a time

Bio: Dennis grew up with six brothers. In that environment he learned teamwork, cooperation, and strong family values.  Went to high school with club member Carla.

After UVM, Dennis moved to CO where he started in cartography and worked for various engineering firms.

His entrance into the political sphere happened after he helped a friend get re-elected.  He soon became the youngest county commissioner elected in the state of CO.  Among his accomplishments, he served when the largest state park was opened.
Dennis was appointed to serve the wildlife commission while in CO.

As family members got ill, Dennis moved back east.  In MA he worked to save Buzzards Bay.  His contributions to economic development for a city in RI were significant enough to win an award.  Also had municipal work at Martha's Vineyard, Falls City, and Sherborn.

Most recently, Dennis spent the last seven years in Somerset, MA as the town administrator.  He advanced recreational opportunities and economic development.

Why did he choose Lebanon and decline other offers?  Dennis was impressed by the city's commitments to planning and transperancy.

Lebanon is different from his work in Somerset in that health boards and income tax are not present here.

Dennis is committed to fight for the Mechanic St project to be included in the state's 10-year plan.
Be sure to check out the new photo album for the 2015 auction!

Excerpted from Walter Hughes email on completion of this project:

We impacted 28,890 lives with this one project.  We have $750,000 worth of projects that were started since your visit to Ghana.  The summary of the project is:

We exceeded most of our goals.  We completed twelve boreholes and one hand dug well. We repaired thirty-two boreholes instead of fifteen. We bought seventy-nine tablets instead of six desktop computers for four schools instead of just one school. We completed 116 microflush toilets instead of 131 toilets.  We funded more computer labs than our plan.  The project budget was $111,224.

This photo was possible because you cared enough to transform lives of children with a new borehole and wells.  THANK YOU!  Our new team leaves on Thursday for Ghana.  The original photos showing the work and the signage for your clubs can be viewed at this link:  https://www.dropbox.com/sh/koyjvm3g48oyakr/AADGhnW0v8OzkZRpK6qDcsmea?dl=0 .  You can download the Dropbox software at www.dropbox.com/download. The final report is attached as well as the photograph of the children at the well.
