In Remembrance of Susan Donnelly
We started our meeting with a time to remember Susan Donnelly. Marilyn shared the following:
"Today we remember Susan Donnelly a member of our Rotary Family. We have shared in service and friendship. In particular we thank Sue for her service to youth, though Girl Scouts, Destination Imagination and in Rotary. She has touched our hearts.
I’ve adapted the following from a message given to me by PDG the reverend Frank Masa. He would remind us, Consider all the memories you have of Sue. You can look at them with your mind's eye; and in the process you begin to look at a completed human life; and then you can put your mental arms around all those memories, and the picture of a life that they form.
We are grateful for all that was precious and wonderful about Sue’s life; thank you for all the goodness and beauty and love that was given to the world through Sue.”
Now…
In the silence and quiet of this room, we light a candle in your honor, Sue. Our paths crossed for a brief time, and we shared life’s journey. Now, your path takes you elsewhere. Your earthly journey has ended and a new journey has begun. May these candles remind us of the sacredness of life and what you meant to all of us.”

Susan Donnelly's Friend, Ellen Hubbell joined us for the Remembrance. She stayed until we completed our happy dollars. She wrote Marilyn Bedell the following after the meeting:
I am going to make a donation in her [Sue's] memory/honor to Rotary Interact...
I also enjoyed the Brag session and wish I'd had my wits about me more as I would have pulled out some cash and my brag would have been:
"I brag about all of you, the service you provide to so many, the camaraderie you share in doing so, the support you give to each other in learning, leading, and serving and as much as Sue gave to Rotary and each of you it's members so she received in return and as her close friend I am grateful that you have been such an important part of her life. Sue encouraged me to join Rotary and though I have not she passed on to me who you are, and how you serve and I learned you are an organization worthy of my respect, admiration and contribution."

Maloney, a member of the Rotary Club of Decatur, Alabama, USA, unveiled the 2019-20 presidential theme, Rotary Connects the World, to incoming district governors at Rotary’s annual training event, the International Assembly, in San Diego, California, USA, on Monday.
“The first emphasis is to grow Rotary — to grow our service, to grow the impact of our projects, but most importantly, to grow our membership so that we can achieve more,” Maloney said.
Maloney believes that connection is at the heart of the Rotary experience.
“(Rotary) allows us to connect with each other, in deep and meaningful ways, across our differences,” Maloney said. “It connects us to people we would never otherwise have met, who are more like us than we ever could have known. It connects us to our communities, to professional opportunities, and to the people who need our help.”
Maloney also called on every Rotary and Rotaract club to identify segments of their community not represented in their club by creating a membership committee with diverse members.
“Through Rotary, we connect to the incredible diversity of humanity on a truly unique footing, forging deep and lasting ties in pursuit of a common goal,” he added. “In this ever more divided world, Rotary connects us all.”
Maloney urged leaders to offer alternative meeting experiences and service opportunities to make it easier for busy professionals and people with many family obligations to serve in leadership roles.
“We need to foster a culture where Rotary does not compete with the family, but rather complements it,” Maloney said. “That means taking real, practical steps to change the existing culture: being realistic in our expectations, considerate in our scheduling, and welcoming of children at Rotary events on every level.”
Maloney said many of the barriers that prevent people from serving as leaders in Rotary are based on expectations that are no longer relevant.
“It is time to adapt, to change our culture, and to convey the message that you can be a great district governor without visiting every club individually, and a great president without doing everything yourself.”
