Bortolot began is talk telling us a little about his education and work history. He graduated from Harvard University with a BA in the history of art and architecture and holds a PhD in art history from Columbia University. He has an interest in African Art. See more by clicking on read more below.
He then divided his talk into three sections, covering the Hood Museum history, future plans for the museum and upcoming exhibits.

History:
Acquisitions in the museum date back to the 1700. Three of note are a Mastodon molar from Bib Bone Link, Kentucky; scientific instrument, orrery; and a ornate silver vessel. A museum to house all the acquisitions wasn't established until 1985...the Hood Museum of Art that is adjacent to the Hopkins Center. Prior to this acquisitions could be found in various locations around campus. The goal now is to keep the collections in the newly expanded Hood Museum of Art. Bortolot let us know that items that were part of a Natural History Collection were transferred to the Montshire Museum, that included the Moose that is now on display at the museum.
In 2023, the museum welcomed over 30,000 partons. 12% where school age children, 22% were college students, and 66% were adults.

Polystyrene Collection (Styrofoam): Phil Bush let us know that Sustainable Lebanon need a new coordinator for collections. Timing for next collection to be determined but hope will be in October.
First Grade Books: The book this year is called, Circus Star. Our personalized first grade books are ready for distribution. See Bruce Bergeron's email asking for helper to do this fun task and Wednesday, June 5th.
It's that wonderful time of year when we get to hand out personalized books to every 1st grade student at Hanover Street School, and Mt Lebanon School.
So far we have confirmed Hanover Street School next Wednesday, June 5th at 8:30 am. We are hoping to have 6-8 volunteers to hand out the books. It will take approximately 30 minutes.

Marilyn Bedell let us know she has a nurse colleague who has been diagnosed with ALS. Please keep Wayne and his family in your thoughts as they navigate this distressing diagnosis.
Angela Nelson reported that a CT Scan taken a while back showed a small aneurysm. A follow-up CT was just done, and the aneurysm has been ruled out! Happy Dance!
Marion Steiner announced her daughter has been accepted in to Franklin Pierce's doctoral program for physical therapy!
Ron Michaud shouted out a thank you to Bruce Bergeron who made a $1,000 donation to Epilogos Charities that matched his donation that was made last week.

The 2 or 3 Rotary volunteers needed are for One or all the following date:
Collections are 9-Noon in Lebanon, July 14, and Sept 28. I would need 2-3 people to interview attendees and direct them where to go. Shifts can be the full 3 hours or I can do shorter shifts – as you know, the busiest time is the first hour or so.

Rotary International Convention in Calgary, Alberta, Canada
The Rotary International Convention will be in Calgary in 2025. Marilyn Bedell has been asked to be the promotions chair for Rotary Zone 32. Ron shared that he has been to Calgary twice for the Calgary Stampede. Calgary is a great city in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies. The conventions will be June 21-25, 2025
This is the only Rotary International Convention that
will be held in North America for the next few years.
So, start planning. The Calgary committee has many
exciting events and pre & post trips planned for the
convention that will be revealed in detail on June 25th.
If you register during this year's Singapore Convention you
will receive a special rate of only $425 per person. That
will last only five days, so you must act quickly. The
dates are June 25 through June 29, 2024. After that
the rates will go up starting June 30, 2024.

During John Hewko’s annual keynote address at the Singapore Convention he shared 5 ways members can revolutionize Rotary:
1. Make your club brand new: think of ways to address your club's challenges
2. Embrace new club models
3. Focus on achieving more by doing less: focus your resources on well-planned projects based on community assessments
4. Look for and find allies everywhere
5. Embrace new technologies
When it comes to growing our membership, we can’t wait around for someone to provide us with a magical solution. Each of us needs to take the initiative. Because we all have the potential to address this issue. We have the potential to be an organization that constantly evolves to reflect a changing world. How can you evolve your club or projects?
He began his talk, "Remember when I said my hashtag#Rotary24 keynote address had a surprise for the Rotary family? Rotary International is truly a global audience and while I speak several languages, I've always thought how wonderful it would be if I could greet even more of our members in their own languages. Well today, I did just that! With a little help from AI, I greeted those attending Convention in English, Hindi, French, Korean, and Chinese."
The 2023-24 Rotary year brought us a number of firsts. India celebrated its first decade of being polio-free. We opened our first Rotary Peace Center in the Middle East. And the first ever Rotaract-sponsored global grants were awarded. These accomplishments are just examples of our collective efforts to increase our impact, expand our reach, provide a memorable membership experience, and adapt to a changing world.
