Ryan experienced the programs of Rotary Foundation as both a Youth Exchange participant and as an Ambassadorial Scholarship student when studying for his master’s degree. The Rotary Foundation helps Rotary members to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace by improving health, providing quality education, improving the environment, and alleviating poverty.
We will have our four RYLA participants from this past spring joining us to receive their Leadership certificates and to give us a brief update on their experiences. We also hope to have our INTERACT members from Lebanon and Mascoma join us for lunch and to hear Ryan’ inspirational tale of the opportunities Rotary made possible for him to undertake.
Ryan first joined Cardigan in 2002. Ryan left Cardigan for two years to earn his MBA at Grenoble Graduate School of Business in Grenoble, France in 2008.
In his Personal Leadership class, he acts as a facilitator to promote self-discovery and develop problem-solving skills amongst his students.
In college he was a member of the Dartmouth Men's Ice Hockey Team and is passionate about teaching his players to think the game at the next level. As a British/Canadian/American citizen, Ryan has traveled to over 70 countries worldwide and has started his own student leadership and travel programs, called Ivy Leader, which he runs in the summers.

Lyrica Stelle, Epidemiologist, Vermont Department of Health, White River Junction, VT
Ed Friedman welcomed, Lyrica Stelle as our speaker. She is a colleague of our fellow Rotarian Rudy Fedrizzi. She gave us an overview of her path to becoming an epidemiologist; provided and overview of the type of work she does for the Vermont Department of Health; and shared how her role melds with the other members of the health care team in White River Junction.
Stelle grew up in rural Vermont where her mother worked for Planned Parenthood. Through her mother's experiences she learned about some of the health challenges faced by women in Vermont. She attended St. Lawrence University minored Public Health. She had an opportunity to do an internship at the Otsego County County Health Department. She then moved on to Oregon State where she received her Masters in Public Health. She made a decision to return to Vermont, and learned about the position at the Vermont Department of Public Heath, and was delighted to be selected to fill the position.
Stelle then outlined the structure of White River Junction Office:
District Director - Rudy Fedrizzi, MD
Nursing Supervisor
Public Heath Nurses for Maternal Child Health, Immunization, Epidemiology, School Health, Tobacco Prevention, Healthy Community Design and Dental Health
Womens, Infants and Children (WIC)
Public Health Specialists for Chronic Disease, Emergency Preparedness, and Epidemiology
The role of District epidemiologist was started when data about Covid became an essential piece of understanding the impact of this virus on our community. Stelle shared that her position works closely with long term care facilities and prison. She serves as an advisor, not a regulator. Her job is to work with facilities to:
Do a situation review — what is the facility like, what challenges are they facing, what resources do they have, what do they need.
Help determine who are close contacts
Understand staffing challenges and needs
Provide information about infection prevention and control best practices
John Yacavone shared trivia you may or may not want to know. He shared if you want to stop a yawn, touch one of your fingers to your tongue.
We learned that Phil Bush was baking bread and was joining us by Zoom from his kitchen. We imaged his kitchen would be smelling very good as that bread baked.
Meeting Review
Meeting called to order by President Ed Friedman at 12:00. Marilyn Bedell Rang the bell when we couldn't hear the one coming from Ed's computer.
The following guests were welcomed to the meeting: Kirk Baird (Prospective Member), and Lyrica Stelle.
Ed then welcomed our speaker, Lyrica Stelle, Epidemiologist for the Vermont Department of Health, White River Junction office. See info about her talk above.
Bill Secord then presented the book for the Kilton Library Children's Collection which as very appropriate to honor an epidemiologist:
If the World Were 100 People: a Visual Guide to Our Global Village, by Jackie McCann, illustrated by Aaron Cushley.
Help your child become a global citizen with this accessible introduction to the people who live on our planet, with big ideas broken into bite-size chunks through clever graphic design. Perfect for home and classroom settings!
With almost 7.8 billion people sharing the earth, it can be a little hard to picture what the human race looks like all together. But if we could shrink the world down to just 100 people, what could we learn about the human race? What would we look like? Where and how would we all be living? This book answers all these questions and more!
Reliably sourced and deftly illustrated, If the World Were 100 People is the perfect starting point to understanding our world and becoming a global citizen. If we focus on just 100 people, it's easier to see what we have in common and what makes us unique. Then we can begin to appreciate each other and also ask what things we want to change in our world.
