Stories
Boston Lot Bridge Build
May 29, 2021 – Twenty individuals from the Rotary Club of Lebanon, the Rotary Club of Hanover, the Lebanon Conservation Commission, the Upper Valley Mountain Bikers Association, and others all under the delightful guidance of Ron Bailey, Town’s Conservation Ranger built ten bridges at the Boston Lot, one of which will bypass a small bike loop.  The bridges will help make the trails at Boston Lot easier to navigate. Our members who participated were Ernst Oidtmann (event organizer), Angela Nelson, Phil Rentz, Tim and Anna Guaraldi.  Pictures from Tim Guaraldi, Ernst Oidtmann, Phil Rentz and Tina Wendon.

Boston Lot is a 439 acres parcel of land that circles Boston Lot Lake, climb Burnt Mountain, loop around Honeysuckle Hill, and connect to the power lines and DHMC. The Park includes seven miles of trails and is rated 3 or 4 moderate difficulty. The most popular way to access the property includes utilizing the parking area adjacent to the Wilder Dam along NH Route 10, and taking the access road approximately 1/2 mile up to the lake area. Additional trail access points include from the Water Tower Road directly south of the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC), as well as both the Indian Ridge trail and Sachem Village trail coming in from the North. There are several trails on private property to the South that connect with the Boston Lot system, including trails on the Landmark property owned by Dartmouth College that extend all the way south to Old Pine Tree Cemetery Rd.

Moorings

Marilyn Bedell caused confusion by sending out an invalid Zoom link, but many found the replacement link and logged on to the meeting.  If you didn't see the new link and tried to join the meeting, sorry if you missed the meeting.

Our pre-meeting banter was focused on Bruce Pacht's computer being hacked. This lead to a discussion of the global problem of ransom wear.  We wished the folks bright enough to do this, would focus on helping to solve some of the world's bigger problems that could would been seen as doing good, and bring them fame and legitimate fortunes.

Jimmy Brock joined the meeting letting us know that the weather in Bermuda has been stellar.

We then talked about the high rates of individuals receiving the COVID-19 vaccine in NH and VT. We are happy to do more socializing.

At 12:05 PM, Ron Bedell then called the meeting to order.
  • Remembering Terri Dudley
Picture from The Lebanon Times, February 19, 2014

Prior to heading into our business meeting, we had a moment of silence to remember and reflect on the life of Terri Dudley. Terri was a Rotarian and the first woman to be inducted into the Rotary Club of Lebanon, and then became the first woman president of our Club.  From the Valley News on Tuesday, June 1, 2021:

LEBANON — Terri Dudley, who played a central role in Lebanon politics for more than 50 years, died on Monday. She was 92.
Known for both her charm and her resolve, the Lebanon native served as a city councilor, mayor and state legislator during a tenure in city government that started in 1958.

Dudley also was a trailblazer in the business community as the first female advertising executive at a daily newspaper in New England, the first female president of the Lebanon Chamber of Commerce and the first woman to lead the Rotary Club of Lebanon. At the heart of all her endeavors was a commitment to her hometown, Dudley’s longtime friend Nancy Merrill said.

John Yacavone then reflected on being nominated by Terri to attend a Young Business Leader event in Washington, D.C. in 1979.  He has always been grateful for her support in helping him grow as a professional early in his career.  Rich Wallace shared that he was hired at the Valley News by Terri.  Jim Damren let us know that Terri had been his neighbor while growing up in West Lebanon.

Club Meeting Notes and Announcements

Minutes from our Club Business Meeting:

  • Our Golf Tournament
The tournament was a success.  We still need to collect about $6,000 in commitments.  Both Bruce and Ed don't think there will be any issues making this happen.  We had a lot of good feedback from our participants.  If you participated in the day and have ideas on how to make the 2022 tournament even better, send those ideas to Ed Friedman. Net income information should be available in a couple of weeks.  Kudos to the Golf Committee for all they did to make this a successful and fun day.  See a few more pictures below.

  • Boston Lot Building Bridges
See pictures and information about the build above.  Ernst thank the club for the financial support to make the new bridges possible. Ernst quipped, "Let sleeping logs lie".  Again, thanks to Ernst, Tim and Anna, Angela and Phil for helping with this project.

  • In Person Meetings
We are going to decide when we will get back to in person meetings shortly, perhaps as early as July.  The Club (23 of 44 member) sent in survey indicating that you would like to meet Thursdays at Noon at Harvest Hill.  Some Covid-19 related events must occur to make this happen.  Some virtual/ hybrid meetings will still be held so that we can accommodate as may members as possible.  The Administration Committee and Club Board will be talking about options over the next couple of weeks.
  • Dues
Ron reminded us that our dues will increase to $30 a month starting July 1st.  June 2021 are still at $27.

A reminder that we contributed $10,000 to have the room named for The Rotary Club of Lebanon.  There will be a wood-framed display case for use by the club inside the room at the Lebanon Library. Bruce and Bill also agreed with Sean on a plaque for the Kilton children's room.  It will read: " Thank you, Rotary Club of Lebanon, for your continuing contribution of books to the Kilton Children's Library."

Will Koppenhefer will oversee a club service event at Riverside Park Tomorrow afternoon, June 4th from 3:00 to about 4 or 4:30.  We will be planting flowers.  Volunteers are needed especially those with gardening talents. Bring gloves, trowels, and watering cans.

We will need various permits from the city and state. Sponsorships will be needed.  Bruce Bergeron will help line up brewers.  A variety of other tasks will need to be completed to have the set up we need for the day of the event.

Upcoming Mobile Food Pantries

As most of you may know, my emails started to be rejected by servers so unfortunately, I’ve not been able to reach out to most of you in quite some time.

Thankfully, we have found a way to fix this and are now able to resume the Mobile Food Pantry(MFP) update emails! The MFP schedule through August is linked below. Some locations are still TBD and we will be updating it, as usual, with any new additions.

The schedule can also be found on our volunteer site. Please go to nhfoodbank.volunteerhub.com to view 24/7 and to sign up for any MFP, or you can continue to email me to sign up! We are quite low on volunteers for Mobile Food Pantries across the board, unfortunately.

Feel free to reach out should you have any questions at all. I’m so happy to have our communication re-established and I hope all is well!

Thank you,

Ashley D. Moulton
