Jeanie McIntyre of the Upper Valley Land Trust - "Wild About Lebanon"

Information shared below come from McIntyre’s talk today and from the Upper Valley Land Trust web pages

Jeanie McIntyre is the President of the Upper Valley Land Trust, the region's land conservancy that, together with the Conservation office of the City of Lebanon, has developed a year-round Wild About Lebanon program.

Jeanie has been with the Upper Valley Land Trust since the late 1980's.  The Upper Valley Land Trust started as the organization with 2.25 FTEs.  Today the organization has a budget of around $1M, a staff of 12, over 200 volunteers and more than 500 properties under conservation, including a number in Lebanon.

Jeanie's background is in accounting and non-profit management. She has won awards in both NH and VT for leadership on agricultural issues, community stewardship and organizational development. The Upper Valley Land Trust is one of the top 15 regional Land Trusts nationwide for the number of properties it has conserved.

The Land Trust Areas of Focus Include:
  • Unfragmented forest and natural habitat, Supporting the working forest economy and connecting the places plants and animals need to adapt and thrive
  • Productive Farmland, Supporting and promoting healthy local food opportunities for those who grow it.
  • Stream corridors, shoreline of rivers and pond, wetland and flood plains, Protecting clean water and resilient ecosystems.
  • Places to learn and play, Establishing access to natural areas, park and trails for all Upper Valley residents.
  • Special places old and new, Helping communities protect landmarks and create more special places as the grow and change.
After sharing global information about the Upper Valley Land Trust, McIntyre shared information about Wild About Lebanon.

Wild About Lebanon is a series of outdoor events celebrating conservation and open space in Lebanon.

The program’s roots go back to 2003. In 2003, volunteer Nicole Cormen initiated a program of outdoor events around Lebanon, NH. Her goal was to acquaint people with Lebanon’s beautiful and varied conserved public lands. She created Wild About Lebanon as a way to showcase the importance of open space, and make sure that all Lebanon residents had the opportunity to visit these properties and learn about the natural world right outside their doors.

There are many Wild About Lebanon outings planned for this year including hikes, picnics, and more. Please click to see Wild About Lebanon events.

The Upper Valley Land Trust and the City of Lebanon Conservation Program have joined to revitalize the program started by Cormen. The Wild About Lebanon series features a variety of City owed and privately owned conserved land within the City limits.  The program planned cover a wide range of activities for everyone from children to Adults.

Rotary and the Gates Foundation extend funding match for polio eradication!

By

Rotary and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced on 22 January that their long-term fundraising partnership, which generates up to $150 million annually for polio eradication, will continue. Under the agreement, Rotary is committed to raising $50 million a year over the next three years, and each dollar will be matched with an additional two dollars by the Gates Foundation.

In a video address at the 2020 Rotary International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA, Bill Gates told incoming district governors that the partnership with Rotary needs to continue.

“The Gates Foundation’s longstanding partnership with Rotary has been vital to fighting polio,” Gates said. “That’s why we’re extending our funding match, so every dollar that Rotary raises is met with two more.”

He added, “I believe that together, we can make eradication a reality.”

The funding will support polio eradication efforts such as disease surveillance, technical assistance, and operational support for immunization activities.

The partnership between Rotary and the Gates Foundation has yielded $2 billion, and Rotarians have given countless volunteer hours to fight polio since Rotary started its PolioPlus program in 1985.

Be a part of the fight to end polio and have your donation matched 2-to-1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Visit endpolio.org to learn more and donate.

Watch Gates talk about the extended funding match.
