Transitioning to a New Rotary Year
2024/2025

2023/2024 President David Crandall with
2024/2025 President Ernst Oidtmann

David Crandall rang the bell at 5:45 PM, calling our 2024 changeover dinner to order.

Since this was his last formal meeting as our club president, he decided he should lead us in the 4-Way Test

We then has a few minutes to have a few more appetizers prior to the dinner buffet, of salad, chicken marsala, roast beef, pasta premavera, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, brownies, fruit tart and fresh fruit + coffee, tea and soft drinks.

Following dinner our Phil Bush entertained us with two songs.  I believe the first was called, San Francisco Bay Blues by Jesse Fuller. The second was a tribute song. Phil wrote the lyrics to to honor both David and Ernst.  The music was by Bob Dylan (Don't Think Twice Its Alright). They lyrics made everyone smile. smiley

Ron Bedell provided our Rotary Foundation Report for 2023/2024.  Marilyn Bedell provided a very brief overview of our Rotary Foundation.

  • At the 1917 convention, outgoing Rotary president Arch Klumph proposed setting up an endowment “for the purpose of doing good in the world.” That one idea, and an initial contribution of $26.50, set in motion a powerful force that has transformed millions of lives around the globe.
  • Since it was founded more than 100 years ago, the Foundation has spent more than $4 billion on life-changing, sustainable projects.
  • The Rotary Foundation Endowment has grown to over 1.78 billion, as of February 2024.  The goal is to grow the endowment to 2.025 billion by the end of 2025.
  • For 15 years we have received the highest 4-Star rating from Charity Navigator.
  • The Rotary Club of Lebanon has received or help support a variety of District and Global Grants here at home and around the globe.
    • District Grant for Kenya's Emmah's Garden
    • District Grant for picnic tables at Riverside Park
    • District Grant to update the Community Room at Romano Circle
    • Supported Global Grants in Ghana
    • District Grant to help fund food for Listen and The Haven. (during Covid pandemic).
    • District Grant to help fund Lebanon Library's Little Free Libraries.
    • District Grant to educate Addiction Recovery Coaches.
  • We continue to support Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation's #1 priority, the eradication of polio.
Ron Bedell and Phil Rentz then presented the following Rotary Foundation recognitions:
  • Dave Clarenbach and Mila Dela Pena are now Foundation sustaining members.

  • Phil Bush is now a Paul Harris Fellow.

Ron Bedell then asked Bruce Bergeron to come up to present a special Paul Harris presentation.  Annually the Rotary Club of Lebanon honors someone who has made a significant contribution to our club and/or our Community.  This year the honoree is our President Dave Crandall. Bruce Bergeron shared many words of appreciation for Dave's leadership over the past three years.  David is always positive, patient, and by his leadership has helped us complete many projects from engaging us in strategic planning to establishing Harmony Park for our Centennial in 2023.

In addition, David has a great sense of humor too.

Tim Guaraldi sent a special recognition to David Crandall since he couldn't be here this evening.  It was a cap with "What a Difference a Dave Makes"

David Crandall  took the floor to acknowledge that everything that was accomplished in 2023/2024 could not have happened without the support of Lebanon Rotarians. He shared that he has great pride in the club, and is filled with gratitude.

He then reminded us of all the projects and fundraisers (Brew Fest, Gold, Poker Room) that were accomplished in 2023/2024. He gave special thanks to all the teams and leaders who made these events successful. He acknowledged the work of all our committee chairs, and their members, and our Charities Trustees. He is proud of the work we did to develop a new strategic plan, and believes it has given us the direction we need to continue to evolve as a meaningful service club.

He then listed off a long list of projects that happened in 2023/2024. Dave did share that his only concern is that no one has agreed to be our president-elect.  Ernst needs us to come up with a plan to fill this role.  If you have ideas, or would be willing to do this role, share that information with Ernst and David

He concluded by stating, "It's been an honor to serve."  He then expressed his gratitude to his wife, Gretchen, who supported the him to do this leadership position.

David then shared the following Dad Joke.  Why did the scarecrow become a great leader? It was because he was outstanding in his field! This was the segway for David to invite Ernst Oidtmann to come forward for the exchange of the gavel.

Not to be out done by Dave's Dad Joke, Ernst shared the following.  Who is the best actor in the Bible?  Sampson as he brought the house down.  Though Ernst reassured us that this won't be his goal for 2024/2025.

Ernst Oidtmann

He reflected that our club is now 101 years old.  He is proud of all the club has achieved over the history of the club.  He shared that he is so proud of the work done by Rotary to eradicate polio worldwide.  We have saved many lives doing this work.  He reminded us that his/our signature project is coming up in July, MRC (Mascoma River Clean-up).

He asked David to come back up to the podium.  He thanked him for his leadership and then presented him with his president's gift, a bowl from Simon Pearce that has Dave's name, his role and the year he served engraved on the rim.

Our changeover planner, John Yacavone was then invited to the podium. We thanked him for organizing the this evening celebration.  He shared the following in closing:

If you can start the day without caffeine,

If you. can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,

If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,

If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it,

If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time,

If you can take criticism and blame without resentment,

If you can conquer tension without medical help,

If you can relax without alcohol,

If you can sleep without the aid of. drugs,

Then You Are Probably…

The Family Dog. 🐶

It was then time to close the meeting with the ringing of the bell, and members reciting, "He profits most who serves best".

In response to a member’s request, because we will have no regular Club meetings on June 27 or July 4, the voting period on Charities’ appropriation of $10,000.00 for the airplane build two-year project (as was explained during the original presentation in May, and in several documents and a memo sent to all Lebanon Rotarians on June 21) will be extended until the close of the regular meeting on Thursday, July 11.

Open discussion of the appropriation will be on the July 11 agenda.  Following such discussion, any Rotarians who have not already voted may cast their vote with me, and any Rotarians who previously cast a vote may change their vote.  I will have the record of prior voting at the meeting.

Rotary Peace Fellowships

The Rotary Foundation received a record number of applications for the 2025 Rotary Peace Fellowship. More than 1,570 candidates submitted applications, striving to become Rotary Peace Fellows at one of our seven Rotary Peace Centers.

Applications that met the eligibility and qualification requirements are now in review with the Rotary Application Evaluators, who include Rotary Peace Centers Committee members, and Rotary members and peace fellowship alumni who are engaged with the program, experienced in peacebuilding, and knowledgeable about the application review process. Top candidates meet with university representatives for another round of review and scoring. Finalists will be notified by November.
We have an exciting year ahead as we select the 2025 Rotary Peace Fellows, including the first cohort for Bahçeşehir University in Istanbul, Türkiye. We’ll also celebrate the opening of this newest peace center as part of the 2025 Rotary Presidential Peace Conference in Istanbul, 20-22 February 2025.

Transmission of wild poliovirus halted in southern Africa

Swift action and improved surveillance ended the spread of wild poliovirus type 1 in Malawi and Mozambique. An expert team that performed thorough assessments recommends officially declaring the outbreak to be over — a huge victory in the effort against polio in Africa.

The last case of wild poliovirus type 1 in the World Health Organization’s African Region, linked to a strain circulating in Pakistan, was reported in Mozambique’s Tete Province in August 2022. Nine cases overall were detected in Mozambique and neighboring Malawi, where the outbreak was declared in February 2022.

In response to the outbreak, more than 50 million children received vaccinations to shield them from the virus. This successful coordinated effort underscores the power of collaboration and the need for a timely response in safeguarding communities against infectious diseases. Read More

Dr. Peter Salk discusses immunizations and his father’s legacy

The announcement on 12 April 1955 that Dr. Jonas Salk’s polio vaccine was safe, effective, and potent showed that polio eradication was a possibility and cemented Salk’s legacy. His son, Dr. Peter Salk, is the president and director of the Jonas Salk Legacy Foundation as well as a professor of infectious diseases and microbiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health. Rotary magazine recently spoke with him to discuss immunizations and polio eradication.
