The New City of Lebanon Commission for Arts and Culture

Trip Anderson

Ben Van Vliet

Ben Van Vliet from the Music Center and Trip Anderson, AVA Gallery provided a overview of the new City of Lebanon's Commission for Arts and Culture. They described how they started meeting with Joe Clifford, Lebanon Opera House, Mayor Susan Prenis and our own Steve Christy to talk about the importance of music, art, performance and other cultural activities that help build stronger communities. These activities are a means to help keep our City vital and growing in many ways. They shared that to be effective and to create synergy, the Arts and Cultural communities need to be connected to our government.  Both sides need to understand each others priorities.  Communications systems need to be strong.

Out of their discussions, a City of Lebanon Commission for Arts and Culture has been formed. The goal is to keep arts as part of the City's Master Plan.  Various examples were provided to illustrate how our arts community supports many professions in the area.  As an example Trip shared how the  Green Way Sculpture project required the talents of many professions to bring it to completion.

From the City of Lebanon web page, here is the information that has just been posted about the Commission:

City of Lebanon’s Arts & Culture Commission

Purpose / Charge
The Arts and Culture Commission was established for the purposes of:
1.   Promoting arts and cultural activities throughout all three wards of the City of Lebanon;
2.   Cultivating relationships, activities and opportunities to grow Lebanon’s cultural economy;
3.   Supporting the development of public-private partnerships that enhance the quality of life and economic vitality in Lebanon;
4.   Establishing policies for consideration and adoption by the Lebanon City Council for the integration of arts into all municipal buildings, structures, and spaces;
5.   Establishing policies for consideration and adoption by the Lebanon City Council defining prospective spaces for, forms of, and processes for the adoption of public art in Lebanon.

Membership
The Commission shall consist of nine voting members, including: one City Councilor; three Citizen Representatives, one from each City ward; one representative from the Heritage Commission; one representative from the Economic Vitality Exchange Committee (EVEC); and three Representatives from Arts Organizations within the City. The Council may appoint not more than three alternate members, one of which may be a City Councilor and two of which may be Lebanon residents at large.  At all times, a majority of the non-alternate members shall be Lebanon residents.
