Moorings

We chatted about the price of home heating oil and propane.  Those who contracted for a set low fuel price before prices spiked are happy they made that decision.

Joy told us about our Interact Club's activities.  See info below about their project for Listen and plans to participate with Mascoma Interact on Feeding America.

Meeting Review
  • 12:06 p.m. — Marilyn Bedell rang the bell to bring the meeting to order.
  • President Hank Clarke welcomed all to the meeting.  We had no guest joining us today.

  • We reviewed club business items which are listed below.
  • The meeting came to an end just before 1 PM
  • We were all reminded that there will be no meeting next week due to Thanksgiving.

  • Food Drives for Listen — Tim Guaraldi
A call for volunteer for November 27 and December 18.  The food drives will be held at the CoOp in Hanover as the Lebanon CoOp is undergoing construction.  We only need 2 Rotarians at a time to cover 1 hour at a time.  Our job is to hand out lists of foods Listen needs to have and then collect the donations a customers exit the store.

We will have a table set outside – dress for the weather!!  Hours 10 AM – 1:00 PM.  Tim will be there all the time.  We will put up a couple of banners. Will we have “Rotary At Work” signs up.

If you can help, contact Tim 448-3250 to see which shifts still need volunteers.
  • Timeline for the Budget July 1, 2022/June 30, 2023
Bruce Pacht reminded us that it is budgeting season for the Club and for Charities.

December is the month for Club service committees to submit their plans for the coming Rotary year to the Club board which, at its January meeting (or meetings) sets its fundraising expectations to accomplish the envisioned services.
  • Charites Update — Bruce  Pacht
The Charities Board met last evening.  Here is an update of topics discussed:

  • We had a request from Plainfield to support a family that didn't get their request in on time to Listen.  We will send funds to Plainfield town officials and they will distribute our contribution to the family in need of support.
  • The Charities Board plans to increase our holiday allocation to Listen for the 2022 holidays.
  • We have already approved funds to send Interactors to the Interact Symposium at the District Conference that will be held at Jay Peak.
  • The Trustees discussed sending student to the Zone Interact Convention in Calgary, Alberta Canada.  We were notified of this event to late to participate, and in addition, it would have cost a lot of money to cover travel, the conference and hotel.  In addition, iti isn't being supported by or District.  Our District is focusing on our own District-wide Interact Symposium at Jay Peak.
  • A proposal will be coming to the club to increase PolioPlus allocation to cover last year’s donation that did not happen.  The request will be for $2,500
  • We now have a signed agreement with ODEVICH (Haiti Project) to have Charities be their fiscal intermediary.
  • Awaiting word from APD Health re: Dwinell digital renovations
  • Awaiting further word on the 100th Anniversary project financial implications
  • Listen Holiday Basket Helpers — Hank Clarke for Angela Nelson
Angela Nelson is still hoping members will send her checks to add to the $450 pledged from our Charities funds.  Listen sent a new appeal for funds, as they have many more people in need this year.  If you can send a check to Angela, please consider doing this.  Mail checks to PO Box 132, Lebanon, NH 03766.  Currently, our total donation will be >$1.100.

Post meeting Angela wrote:

  • The Rotary Foundation - November is Foundation Month - Ron Bedell and Phil Rentz
We have $3,000+ in giving with about half the club donating so far.  We want to achieve “Every Rotarian Every Year”;  a gift of $25 would qualify one as a participant.  The Foundation Committee continues to hope that all will consider making a donation.
  • Interact Service Project — Joy Gobin
Joy Gobin sent us the pictures of the Interact Club at LHS working on their service project for Listen

The Interact Club created a knitting/crochet service project in support of the Listen Center. Students are making hats, scarfs, and headbands. Thanks to all who came out.

The club continues to keep the Sue Donnelly Listen outdoor food pantry stocked.

On April 29, 2021, both LSH and Mascoma High School will participate in Feeding America meal preparations.

  • Membership Updates – Hank Clarke
We have developed a folding business card to give out to folks when talking about Rotary. We will be ordering 500 of them.  Marilyn displayed the excellently-designed and very informational card.

  • Speech Contest — Phil Rentz
Phil let us know that we are planning for the first round of the speech contest to be on February 10 for Round 1.  Joy has some contestants from Lebanon HS.  Possibility of KUA contestants as well. We don't know if we will have any contestants from Mascoma.

A question was raised by John Yacavone:  Will student participants be required to be vaccinated if they speak at Harvest Hill?

If it were held now, said Cindy Jerome, they’d have to be vaccinated.
Bruce Pacht pointed out that Dona Bate, District Speech Contest Chair, said that all contestants have to present the same way, either virtually or in person.
  • RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) 2022 — Bruce Pacht
If we want our club to send students, we need a Volunteer to Oversee.  Please offer to lead this youth service activity.

From Larry Vars — Rotary District 7850 RLYA Champion:
This year’s International theme is Serve to Change Lives. RYLA gives students the tools to make leadership a part of their life.

I want to announce that that our next RYLA will be in person and we have requested the weekend of June 24 - 26, 2022 at Northern Vermont University, Lyndon. The weekend will start at 8:00 am Friday and conclude at 12:00 noon on Sunday. The counselors will start our planning in September for this event.

When you hear the closing testimonials from the students and see the many Ah ha moments during the event, you realize that our time is well spent building the morals and leadership qualities in our youth.

From the District's web Page:

District 7850 Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) is a nationally recognized honor based on selection by a local Rotary Club and completion of the RYLA Leadership Challenge Conference. Students completing their high school sophomore year (ages 15-16) are eligible.

The conference focuses on developing leadership skills, communication abilities and team-building tools and is scheduled from Friday, June 24 through Sunday, June 26.  This unique opportunity brings young people from VT, NH, and Quebec together to share, evolve and learn to be more effective and self-confident leaders in their schools, teams, communities, and other facets of everyday life.

  • Annual Holiday Party at the Quechee Inn at Marshland Farms and our Famous Yankee Swap — Ron Bedell
Good news:  We have 27 members and guests signed up already.  Bad news:  16 people haven’t gotten back to me yet and several are on this call, so please get back to me.  We have 13 more spaces. Check should be made out to Ron Bedell and bring to December 9 meeting, or mail to Ron Bedell, 35 Lily Lane, West Lebanon, NH 03784 or bring to event itself.  Cost if $40 pp, with the club picking up the $7pp price of hors d’oeuvres.  Bring one Yankee Swap gift wrapped anonymously, and not cost more than $15.  All persons attending the meeting should be vaccinated and will be masked unless eating.
  • Poker Room — John Yacavone
No new news.  For new people, John explained that Lebanon is one of 6 designated gambling areas.  Poker rooms have to give 35% of their profit to not-for-profit groups.  For the past two years, out 10 days of benefit have yielded $12,000 and $17,000.  Our 10 days will be in April, 2022; more specifics will become clear in January.
  • Thank You Note From District Governor Mike Carrier
We sent DG Mike Carrier home with a present after his talk last week.  He wrote:

Hi Hank,

Just wanted you and the club members to know that Linda and I jumped on your gifts this morning and had blueberry waffles with that delicious dark amber Vermont Maple Syrup!

  • Listen Holiday Basket Helpers
Update from Angela Nelson (this was sent in a separate email too):

Hello everyone!

Crazy enough it is almost the holidays!  Where HAS this year gone!  Listen has started their holiday basket program again.  Unfortunately due to the COVID variants, they are doing cash donations in order to purchase gift cards to clothing stores and grocery stores again.  Not nearly as much fun as shopping for adorable clothes for everyone, but still fulfills the needs and purpose.

For new members who don't know about this program.  Listen creates holiday baskets for applicants.  Community members/organizations sponsor these families and usually receive wish lists of 5-6 clothing items with sizes and likes for each child (or senior) and then each family is given a $50 gift certificate to a grocery store.  The community members/organizations then would normally shop for these clothing items.  It usually costs about $100 per child.  Last year and now this year the shopping part has been eliminated due to COVID, but the need is just as high, if not higher.

The club itself budgets $450 for this program, but usually we sponsor 6-7 families.  Rotary members, as they wish, donation funds (or had chosen items to shop for) to the charities account and then one big check is written to Listen from the club.  If or how much someone gives is completely up to the member and I am the only one who knows!!!!  Since the funds are going to the charities account, any contribution made is considered a charitable donation for tax purposes.  If you would like to donate there are a few ways.  You can mail a check to PO Box 132, Lebanon, NH 03766  (just put a note in or email me saying it is for Listen) or you can bring a check or cash to a face to face meeting (I should be at the next couple face to face meetings, but if I am not you can give it  to Tim (or whoever may be filling in for him) and I will get it).  If either of these don't work, you can email me and we can work something else out.

If you have any questions please let me know.  Thank you for your help with keeping kids and seniors warm and fed for the holidays!

Ang

Rotary International News

Polio Update - Afghanistan
Sad news to report from Mike McGovern, Chair International Polio Committee.  This was his post on Facebook from November 19, 2021

Michael wrote: 'At a meeting I attended today of the polio partnership, we were told the details of two new wild polio virus cases reported last weekend from Afghanistan. I am not sure why they did not appear today in the official weekly update. As I speak to Rotarians giving updates, I am continuing to report on all four wild polio virus cases that the WHO has solid knowledge of.

From This Week - GPEI
  • In Afghanistan, advance notification was received of two new wild polioviruses type 1 (WPV1) cases in the country.  These cases will officially be reflected in next week’s data.  The cases had onset of paralysis on 20 and 29 October 2021, from Kunduz province.
Rotary International Action Plan

As People of Action, we understand that fulfilling that vision requires a plan.
More than a century ago, we pioneered a new model of service leadership grounded in person-to-person connections. Today, those connections are a network that spans the globe—bridging cultural, linguistic, generational, and geographic barriers—and shares the vision of a better world. As People of Action, we understand that fulfilling that vision requires a plan.
This is Rotary’s Action Plan through 2024: to increase our impact, expand our reach, enhance participant engagement, and increase our ability to adapt.
