Club President Changeover
From

To

Past President Ron’s remarks:
Ron shared that it has been a challenging year.  He send a review of member engagement to all members prior to the meeting, and he hopes you will take time to reflect on your participation in club activities.  Ron reflected that may tasks were accomplished by many of us doing a little so no one had to do a lot.  He reported that during the year we inducted 5 new members. We had other members depart the club.  We are currently at 42 members.  We held meetings every week via Zoom.  We had some dynamic speakers.  We are currently in first place in annual giving per capita to the Rotary Foundations Annual Programs Fund/Share.  We separated Charities activities from the Club board meetings and updated the bylaws for both organizations.  It is hoped that these changes will make it easier to get club and charities work done more smoothly.  Zoom board meetings and committee meetings saved lots of commuting time.  Ron then turned the meeting over to Hank.  He wishes him only the best as we begin a new year of service to Rotary in Lebanon and around the world.

New President Hank’s remarks:
Hank shared that everyone appreciates the work Ron and Marilyn did to keep the club together.  Hank thanked Bruce Pacht for setting up the Charities board and revising all of our bylaws.  Rich Wallace for the new outward facing internet site.  As to the new year, the RI theme is “Serve to Change Lives.”  Hank reflected that as he went through NEPETS he realized we are doing a lot FOR our community; he’d like us to focus this year on doing things WITH the community, with partnerships.

Besides partnerships, Hank would like to focus on “Each one, bring one”:  If you are a member, bring one other person into Rotary.

Hank also wants to work on diversity, equity and inclusion.

Hank then asked all committee chairs to send him a list of the active members of each committee.

He then made some announcement about Brew Fest (see below) and his hope that we can once again do the Great American Pie Buffet as a PolioPlus fundraiser. He stated,  "Let’s get a Pie committee put together after the summer.  We want to maintain our $2,500 contribution to PolioPlus."  (Pie chair Tim began moving on this in the chat room!)

DG Mike Carrier provide the following Changeover remarks:
He shared that he is impressed with your excellent newsletter. He noted that we have some of the most interesting speakers.  He sees us as a vibrant and active club.
He shared this as a priority for 2021/2022, We need to work to keep ourselves connected as we find our way back out of this traumatic year of COVID, let’s be sensitive to where people are at, give them grace to decide, but work hard to keep them included.  He believes we have members who will make decisions that will strengthen our club.

Time for a Club Happy Dance!

Thank you Charles Schulz for always reminding us to celebrate.

Moorings

We were joined by our incoming District Governor, Mike Carrier.  We note that he has 364 and a half days left in his term of office.  Mike is a member of the Rotary Club of Plymouth, New Hampshire. You can read his bio on the Northeast Presidents-elect Seminare (NEPETS) web page.  Click here

Before the meeting officially started we had an update on Dan's recluse spider bite that is almost totally healed.  We noted that Tim Guaraldi was looking dashing in a dress shirt and tie.  Many commented on the thunderstorm that struck the Upper Valley the night before. Some how the conversation turned to Dan telling us that we can see his arm and hand in the movie The French Connection and a few comments about being a hand model.

  • Marilyn Bedell rang our Rotary Bell
  • Immediate Past President, Ron Bedell called the meeting to order at 12:04 PM.
  • Hank Clarke recited the 4-Way Test. [In the future, President Hank announced that when we are on Zoom, only one person will say it for all of us to avoid Zoom confusion.]

Club Meeting Notes and Announcements
  • Club Dues
Ron reminded us that as of today, our dues will be $35 per month.  Your July invoice will be coming your way soon.
  • In-Person Meetings/Meeting Schedule Changes
Reminder

THE ROTARY CLUB OF LEBANON, NEW HAMPSHIRE
WE MEET IN-PERSON AT HARVEST HILL STARTING JULY 22nd AT NOON

The Board of Directors has decided that Lebanon Rotary Club in-person meetings will
           resume on July 22nd.

The board has also raised monthly dues to $35.00/ starting July 1st; dues do NOT include food/drink.

Harvest Hill has a minimum meeting room fee of $250.00; however, for $300.00 per meeting, they will provide food for 20+ attendees.  It is a great deal.  Those wishing to eat the available meal or consume beverages during the meetings when food will be available, will be charged $10.00 per meal.  Those attending and not eating, or drinking will not be charged for attending the meeting.  Guests and visiting Rotarians will be charged $15.00.

All Lebanon Rotary regular club meetings will occur on Thursdays at Noon.  We will meet in-person at Harvest Hill on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays (starting July 22nd), and by Zoom on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays.  This schedule may change to all in-person meetings with an option to attend via Zoom if we determine we have the technology to make it work.

When a 5th Thursday occurs, we will schedule a social event, a service project, or some other activity during that week.

To keep us all as safe as possible Lebanon Rotary will require all those attending in-person meetings to be fully vaccinated.  We will rely on Rotarians’ word that they are vaccinated, bearing in mind the 4-Way Test of the things we think, say, or do.  Harvest Hill we require us to use a hand sanitizer station before entering the buffet line.

You should not attend an in-person meeting if you do not feel good – that is, if you have a fever, a cold, flu, Covid or other symptoms, or a contagious ailment.
  • Listen dinners
We will start preparing meals at Listen starting Tuesday, July 13.  A Doodle sign-up will be circulated for every other month participation.  There’s a need for 4-5 people to prepare meals for about 100 people.
  • Terri Dudley’s Funeral
The Valley News reported that Terri Dudley's Funeral will be on July 16 at 1:00 PM.  Terri was Lebanon Rotary’s first female member and a former president of Lebanon Rotary.
  • RI Convention June 4-8, 2022 in Houston TX
Ron again announce that the Rotary International Convention will be in Houston.  Read more by clicking here Registration fee until 15 December will be $475.

  • Lebanon Rotary Charities, Inc Report
Emmah’s Garden: Cal Wolfe reported that the filters have arrived in the village along with the equipment top assemble them.  The health clinic will be first to receive filters.  Then they will roll out to women pregnant or with children not yet weaned.

Trustee News:

It is with pleasure that the Charities Trustees announce the appointment of member Rudy Fedrizzi to serve out the vacant one-year Trustee term ending June 30, 2022.

Picture from Rudy's Classification Talk

Many thanks to those who put themselves or another Rotarian forward for the position.  We had high quality from which to choose.

Bruce,
2020-21 Chair
Rotary Club of Lebanon, NH Charities Inc.

  • Brew Fest
Hank reports that the tent and portable toilets have been ordered.  Will Koppenheffer is working on the state and city requirements.  Additional updates will be coming.  Planning meeting to be held soon. Hank reflected that when the event came to a close, members were then allowed to sample some of the beer too. Steve Whitman has shared that he will need to back away from leading our fundraising effort so we need others to join in and help with this important task.
-Rudy mentioned Brewfest to Keene City Rotary colleagues who wondered if you ever had a need for other clubs to come up and work as volunteers.
-Hank:  We’ll be sending out a work Doodle for that day, but everyone may attend with $30 and drink beer.
-Bruce Bergeron:  We had 25-30 members last year plus folks the breweries brought helped out.
-Dan Affeldt has a friend at the Pentagon who’s already asked him for this year’s date.
-John Yacavone:  We had fewer than a dozen non-drinking drivers last year.
-Marilyn suggested that Hank check with Past District Governor (PDG) Guy Babb – there may be a fellowship of Rotarian Beer Drinkers who’d appreciate knowing about the Brewfest.
  • End Polio Now Update
Marilyn:  UVM is doing a phase 1 vaccine trial for a new oral polio vaccine less likely to cause vaccine-derived polio; they are seeking 18-45 year old volunteers.  So far this year, there have been only 2 cases of polio caused by the wild virus (1 each in Afghanistan and Pakistan).  Global Polio Eradication is still Rotary’s number one priority.
  • Community Service
Bruce B soon will organize a meeting of the community service committee.  One item to consider will be City Manager/Rotarian Shaun Mulholland’s potential gardening projects.
  • Hybrid Meetings
Bruce P requested that President Hank set a high priority requested on establishing hybrid attendance via Zoom for all our in-person meetings.  For starters, Dan Affeldt will work with Cindy Jerome to find out exactly what kind of Wi-Fi is available at Dwinell.  Bruce P will help with a small committee to work on effective hybrid meetings.  DG Mike Carrier reminded us that he has the District’s “Owl” mechanism, which Lebanon could borrow if we wished to try out that technology.
  • President's Picnic at Tim and Anna Guaraldi's Home in Newport, NH (RAIN or SHINE)
Bruce Pacht has sent out an email to all members asking them to respond to him if they plan to come to the picnic.  So far three members have responded.  If you last name begins with the letter from A to J, please bring a dessert; if you last name begins with K to Z, bring a dessert.  Main gathering will be at 4:30 PM but you are welcome to come early to swim, fish, target shoot (but bring your own ammo.) Bill Secord is hoping the ATV will be off limits to Linda this year. smiley Cost $10 to cover cost of hamburgers and hotdogs, and other picnic supplies.

Anything else for the good of the club?  Happy Thoughts/concerns

Happy thoughts:
  • JoAnn Lemieux was willing to pay $10 to support Cal as our idea guy for increasing our international service in Kenya.  We used WhatsApp yesterday with Emmah to find out what the village needs next.   Sad news:  JoAnn sold her motorcycle and this is the first time in 46 years that she has no motorcycle in her life.
  • Bruce Bergeron let us know that that the recipient of this week’s car wash is new member Janet Vaughan. Marilyn Bedell will send Janet's email address to Bruce.
  • Ernst has an “interesting” dollar:  Last week, his grandchildren dropped off their parents to study German, while the grandchildren proceeded to college.  Also, Ernst’s email was hacked – he’ll send Marilyn the new email address.
  • Dan A:  Donation in praise of Dave Crandall.  Rosemary and he attended Twin Pines's annual meeting, and he went to the ribbon-cutting of a fine new project “The Village at Crafts Hill” in Lebanon.  NH is demographically the 2nd oldest state in the country.  Other demographic trends are changing the universe of housing in our state.
  • Rudy Fedrizzi’s daughter landed a staffing job with a group going to Greece and Croatia for 14 days.  Today, she’s taking a catamaran to a couple of islands.  It’s amazing how global young people are!
The meeting was adjourned close to 12:30 PM.  Ron lead us in our Rotary Motto:

They profit most who serve the best.

Mark your calendar! Friday, August 13–Sunday, August 15

Things feel a bit different. It could be the longer, warmer days. It could be the increase in vaccinations (an important factor in our eventual reopening) coupled with a decrease in COVID restrictions. Either way, we are at a crossroads.

Inspired by the idea of literal and metaphorical crossroads, Lebanon Opera House proudly presents the FREE Nexus Music and Arts Festival in and around Colburn Park, extending to the pedestrian mall and the revitalized rail trail tunnel. Outdoor performances from regional touring artists, LOH’s community arts partners, and student-artists will be featured alongside displays of public art and al fresco dining—flashes of creativity and community at every turn. Necessarily, planning is being done with public health measures in mind.

We see Nexus as an important leadership opportunity; a chance to thank those who support LOH and the greater Lebanon arts community. A chance to demonstrate the impact of the arts on our local economy. Mark your calendar and plan to join the chorus of supporters who believe that the arts are worth celebrating!

Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, this family-friendly event is FREE and open to all. Please consider your own tax-deductible gift in support of Nexus. As a nonprofit organization, we acknowledge that every dollar raised makes a difference.

  • Brew Fest 2021 — September 4, 2021 (Saturday of Labor Day Weekend)

Rotary International News

Rotary.org

Dear Rotary Governors and Regional Leaders,

I want to thank you deeply and sincerely for all that we have accomplished together in this difficult year.

We started this year under enormously challenging circumstances – a raging pandemic which had brought the world to its knees, caused untold physical and economic hardships and much suffering, pain and even death to many of our members.

In the context of the prevailing situation it would have been tempting to put off big decisions and tough actions as indeed many did.

The Rotary Foundation instead moved forward in dramatic ways, and your active cooperation made that possible.

I like to compare the work we did this past year to what happened with the space program with the Apollo 13 challenge. If Apollo 13 astronauts and Mission Control had focused only on what was wrong with their space craft, all would have been lost, but instead they asked "What have we got in that ship that's good?"

And so they figured out a way to keep everyone alive by building makeshift CO2 filters using containers and duct tape aboard the ship. That managed to expel carbon dioxide from the ship and get the astronauts back safely to earth.

And so we reached out to our members holding firm to our ambitious fundraising targets, and as a result, I am pleased to tell you that it is likely we will exceed our goal of $410 million in contributions, which is quite astonishing given the global economic situation.

But that is not all; we have done more than survive the past year.  We have taken a hard look at our resources and made the most of them, allowing us to:

  • Launch our new Programs of Scale;
  • Open the Makarere Peace Center
  • Move forward on a plan to set up a new Mid-East Peace Center;
  • Set important ground rules for future global grants for Rotaract;
  • Complete the necessary preparations to launch our new Area of Focus on the Environment;
  • Sanction 1,957 global grants for total funding of $138,707,145 is more than a 40% increase in approvals since 2020
  • Take steps to reduce travel costs substantially next year and
  • Make policy changes that will strengthen the Foundation’s long-term financial stability

We were also part of Polio Plus history in that Africa was declared free of the wild Polio Virus this year.

All of these major steps forward were achieved with the tremendous assistance of our remotely working staff whose diligence and devotion I’d like to acknowledge with sincerity.

My friends, we have been charged with moving our Foundation forward at a cross road in history. One road will take us to a better world; more inclusive, more equitable, and more respectful of mother nature. The other will take us to a world that resembles the one we just left behind, but probably worse.

We therefore needed to get it right. Now was our time to lead, to shape a new and better world as we emerge from this crisis. Now was the time to ensure that our actions will be remembered well.

Thank you for choosing the right path and taking the important first steps towards a brighter future.

Sincerely,

K.R. Ravindran

End Polio Now Update - Delivering on a Promise

June 2021

New polio eradication strategy takes aim at remaining challenges
Rotary and our Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) partners have launched the Polio Eradication Strategy 2022-2026: Delivering on a Promise to overcome the remaining challenges to ending polio, including last year’s increase in polio cases caused by a pause in vaccination campaigns due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Leaders from Pakistan and Afghanistan — the last two countries where wild polio remains endemic — have recommitted to working with the GPEI to improve vaccination campaigns and reach at-risk children. As long as polio exists anywhere, it remains a threat everywhere.

In addition to providing a roadmap to eradication, the new strategy calls for renewed political and financial commitments from governments and donors to achieve a polio-free world. Learn more about the action underway to eradicate polio.

Why vaccinations matter
Scientific breakthroughs with vaccines have led to fewer measles outbreaks, the eradication of smallpox, and a reduction in worldwide polio cases by 99%. Building on our decades of experience supporting polio vaccinations, Rotary clubs are helping increase public trust in COVID-19 vaccinations and working toward the equitable distribution of these vaccines.

News from the University of Vermont — New Polio Vaccine Study

Polio Vaccine Study

This is a phase 1 research study to test new oral polio vaccines (OPV) to see if they are safe and to see if they prepare the body’s immune system to fight against poliovirus infection.  To eliminate all polio disease around the world, we need better vaccines that improve the body's germ fighting response while reducing the chance of causing polio disease. We are looking for healthy volunteers, age 18-45, who have been previously vaccinated against polio. There is compensation from $680-$770 for enrolled volunteers.

How to learn more and volunteer:
