Upcoming Board and Committee Meetings:

Board of Directors Meeting — Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at 5 PM (NEW TIME AND DAY)
Moorings
We were joined by our speech contestants, and members of the Lebanon High School staff. We were a quiet group today.  We did learn that Cindy Jerome is finishing up a project for APD Lifecare, and has accepted a position in Massachusetts.  We hope that she will continue to join us via Zoom.

Meeting review:
  • 12:03 p.m. – President Hank Clarke asked Secretary Marilyn Bedell to ring her virtual bell to bring the meeting to order.
  • Rudy Fedrizzi volunteered and recited the 4-Way test.
  • President Hank welcomed everyone attending from Lebanon High School with a special welcome to our speech contestants, Mary Rainey, Adriana Caraeni and Riley Naylor
  • We then moved on to the speech contest.
Speech Contest

This years speech contest rules asked our students to prepare and deliver a 5 minute speech on the following topic, "How can your school partner with Rotary to change lives?"  In addition they were asked to relate this topic to teamwork and Rotary values.

Each student had done research about Rotary and our core values, and our ethical framework of the 4-Way Test.

Mary Rainey explored the importance of education both here in the Lebanon, and globally.  She talked about the problems of gender inequities, problems that arise when there isn't diversity.  She reflected on the role Rotary has placed in advancing literacy and basic education globally.

Adriana Caraeni reflected on the impact of Covid-19 on her peer group. She is concerned about the high levels of depression that exists in her high school cohort. She shared that Rotarians were in a position to help kids.  That encouraging students to join Rotary service projects would permit/provide opportunities, in a safe and comfortable environment, to build goodwill and better friendships with adults in their community.  In addition, students will feel good knowing they are helping through community service.

Riley Naylor speech focused on the role that Rotarian could play in mentoring high school students. Through mentoring, lasting change can happen in the lives of students.  Rotarians could help students develop leadership skills and other skills that will help them learn how to be resilient.  She shared that when you have a passion, you can make a lasting impact on those around you.  Her hope would be that we could create projects that will make a difference in our community.

While the judges signed off to compare scores and come to consensus on a winner, Hank asked each student to tell us a little more about their interests.

Mary Rainey, a junior at LHS came to Lebanon from Iowa.  She is a student athlete, and has a passion for soccer and plays with a group in Epping, NH.  Her goal is to be part of a collegiate soccer team.  She enjoys math and science.  She is a part of a group at LHS, Students for a Sustainable Future.  In college, she thinks she may want to major in the humanities, with a focus on psychology.

Adriana Caraeni a junior at LHS has been a student in Lebanon since first grade.  Her academic interests are in STEM.  She has black belt in Karate and is an alpine skier.  She is considering going to McGill University in Quebec.  She plans to study computer science and applied math. (She remembers our first grade book we gave her many years ago.)

Riley Naylor is a freshman at LHS.  She is focused on academics.  Sports just aren't her thing.  She is working at the Hartland Diner, and encouraged us to go there to eat.

Our judges returned to the meeting, and announced that Riley Naylor is the winner of Round One, and we will look forward to her taking part in the next round the week of March 7, 2022.  That round most likely will be held on March 8 or 10.  The runner-up was Adrianna Caraeni.

Principal Ian Smith congratulated Riley, Adrianna and Mary for doing such a nice job.  He was proud to know they were representing Lebanon High School.

Announcements:

They want to attract a diverse group of students whose post-graduation plans may include going into a trade school rather than college.

For Mary Rainey — Leave It to Abigail: The Extraordinary Life of Abigail Adams by Barb Rosenstock; illus by Elizabeth Baddeley

In this inspiring tribute, award-winning author Barb Rosenstock and New York Times bestselling artist Elizabeth Baddeley tell the true story of one of America's greatest founding mothers: Abigail Adams.

Everyone knew Abigail was different.

Instead of keeping quiet, she blurted out questions. Instead of settling down with a wealthy minister, she married a poor country lawyer named John Adams. Instead of running from the Revolutionary War, she managed a farm and fed hungry soldiers. Instead of leaving the governing to men, she insisted they "Remember the Ladies." Instead of fearing Europe's kings and queens, she boldly crossed the sea to represent her new country. And when John become President of the United States, Abigail became First Lady, and a powerful advisor.

Leave it to Abigail--an extraordinary woman who surprised the world.

"This lively biography chronicles some of the ways Abigail continued to surprise her contemporaries with her new ideas, strong voice, and constant courage."
―School Library Connection

"Through lively text, the author showcases the ways Adams was ahead of her time. The refrain, 'Leave it to Abigail,' adds a rhythm to the narrative, making thisa good choice to read aloud.Baddeley (I Dissent, 2016) adds humor and panache with her pencil-and-ink illustrations, adding an authentic feel through lovely cross-stitch finishing touches."

For Riley Naylor — On Wings of Words The Extraordinary Life of Emily Dickinson by Jennifer Berne; illus. Becca Stadtlander.

An inspiring and kid-accessible biography of one of the world's most famous poets.

Emily Dickinson, who famously wrote "Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul," is brought to life in this moving story. In a small New England town lives Emily Dickinson, a girl in love with small things—a flower petal, a bird, a ray of light, a word. In those small things, her brilliant imagination can see the wide world—and in her words, she takes wing. From celebrated children's author Jennifer Berne comes a lyrical and lovely account of the life of Emily Dickinson: her courage, her faith, and her gift to the world. With Dickinson's own inimitable poetry woven throughout, this lyrical biography is not just a tale of prodigious talent, but also of the power we have to transform ourselves and to reach one another when we speak from the soul.

• Fantastic educational opportunity to share Emily Dickinson's story and poetry with young readers
• An inspirational real-life story that will appeal to children and adults alike.
• Jennifer Berne is the author of critically acclaimed children's biographies of Albert Einstein and Jacques Cousteau.

For Adriana Caraeni — The Next President by Kate Messner; illus. by Adam Rex

An inspiring and informative book for kids about the past and future of America's presidents.

Who will be the NEXT president? Could it be you? When George Washington became the first president of the United States, there were nine future presidents already alive in America, doing things like practicing law or studying medicine.

When JFK became the thirty-fifth president, there were 10 future presidents already alive in America, doing things like hosting TV shows and learning the saxophone.

And right now—today!—there are at least 10 future presidents alive in America. They could be playing basketball, like Barack Obama, or helping in the garden, like Dwight D. Eisenhower. They could be solving math problems or reading books. They could be making art—or already making change.

• A breezy, kid-friendly survey of American history and American presidents
• Great for teachers, librarians, and other educators
• Kate Messner's nonfiction picture books have been lauded by critics and received a variety of awards.

From award-winning author Kate Messner and New York Times bestselling artist Adam Rex comes a timely and compelling compendium about the U.S. presidents—before they were presidents.

Kate Messner is an award-winning author whose many books for kids have been selected as Best Books by the New York Times, Junior Library Guild, IndieBound, and Bank Street College of Education. She lives on Lake Champlain with her family.

Adam Rex is the author and illustrator of many beloved picture books and novels, including Nothing Rhymes with Orange and the New York Times bestseller Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich. The Seven Centers of Peace

Situated in different parts of the world, the Rotary Peace Centers offer tailor-made curricula to train individuals devoted to peacebuilding and conflict resolution — no matter where they land.

by Illustrations by

Rita Lopidia vividly recalls her experiences as a Rotary Peace Fellow at the University of Bradford in England. “The classes in African politics and UN peacekeeping were my favorite,” she says. “The politics course challenged me to dig deeper into research to understand the history of the continent, and the peacekeeping class aided my understanding of global politics. As a practitioner, that was an eye-opener to have a global view of events happening around the world.”

Lopidia's time at the Rotary Peace Center profoundly affected her. "After graduation, I traveled back to Africa and settled in Uganda due to the ongoing conflict in South Sudan," she explains. "There I established the EVE Organization for Women Development and started engaging the South Sudanese refugees in Uganda and their host communities. Through my organization, we were able to mobilize South Sudanese women to participate in the South Sudan peace process promoted by eastern Africa's Intergovernmental Authority for Development — and that led to the signing of the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan in 2018."

Lopidia is just one of the 1,500-plus peace fellows from more than 115 countries who have graduated from a Rotary Peace Center since the program was created in 1999; the first peace centers began classes three years later. Currently, Rotary has seven peace centers in various locations around the world; the newest, at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda — the first in Africa — welcomed its inaugural cohort of peace fellows in 2021. Next, Rotary plans to establish a peace center in the Middle East or North Africa, perhaps as soon as 2024, and has set its sights on opening one in Latin America by 2030.

As you will discover, the curriculum at each peace center has been carefully crafted to address specific aspects of the peacebuilding process — and train the next generation of global change-makers.
