Program:  Get Big Money out of Politics, Bring Americans Together

From our speaker: Dan McMillan founded and leads Save Democracy in America, a non-partisan campaign to get big money out politics. He has earned a Ph.D. in German history from Columbia and a law degree from Fordham. He has taught college-level history and prosecuted criminal cases for the Brooklyn DA’s office. In 2014 Dan published an acclaimed book for the general public about why the Holocaust happened. After several years researching a book about money in politics, Dan decided that direct political action was more urgently needed and launched his campaign for voter-owned elections.

Dan first came to New Hampshire in the 1980s for the ice climbing near North Conway and St. Johnsbury, VT. A dedicated rock climber in his youth, Dan has made three ascents of El Capitan in Yosemite Valley – the highest rock wall in North America.”

  • Program
    • Rich Wallace and Marion Steiner provided an update from the Public Relations Committee work to help build our brand.
Rich and Marion gave a presentation about what the PR committee has been doing. They have interviewed three outside marketing consultants. There is one they prefer but will have to discuss scope of work and pricing. Hiring outside consultant will be expensive and is not a one-time expenditure. PR committee to discuss if it is sustainable. We are aiming for a brand awareness campaign, getting the Rotary Club of Lebanon name out in front of the public to generate interest. In the day it takes 10-15 impressions to get someone to react to a brand. Ahmad mentioned that he supports targeted advertising to create brand awareness to help with membership recruitment.

Marion asked club members what they would like to get out of the campaign. It was mentioned that we need to get our story out to the public and tell them the good we are doing. Marion and Rich mention that content and content creation is what is important for us to tell our story. It was discussed that we would need to tell the story of our club and individual members and why Rotary is important to them. It was discussed that we have to look at ourselves as well and what we do to see if we will appeal to new members. Ernst mentioned that we have to ask people to come and join us and it is important to talk about Rotary with people we meet and those who come to our events.  Rich mentioned that many of us met and encouraged people to join through our work relationships. With more members retired, the contact with co-workers and associates has decreased. The PR committee’s next step is to evaluate a proposal from the consultant they like, but will meet to discuss what it will take financially to meet our goals and will report back to the club as necessary.

From the New York Times:
Shot to Protect Against Polio and Five Other Diseases Is Approved by Gavi
The international vaccine aid group agreed to provide developing countries with a new shot to prevent a global resurgence of the paralyzing virus.

June 30, 2023

The News
The governing board of Gavi, the international organization that provides vaccines to developing countries, added a new shot to its roster this week that could help to eradicate polio worldwide and prevent its resurgence.
The new vaccine does not contain the live viruses that are in the polio vaccines currently used in some low- and middle-income countries. It adds what’s known as an inactivated polio component into a multifaceted shot that is already being used to protect young children against five other dangerous infections. A similar shot is already available in the United States and some European countries.
