Stories
Speaker - Past Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair, Brenda Cressey
Brenda joined Rotary in 1989 and is currently member of the Rotary Club of Ogunquit, ME, USA, in Rotary District 7780.  She served as District 5240 Governor in 2001-02 and is retired as the CEO of Office Support Systems, a telecommunications business in Maine.

Brenda served in several key roles for Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation and in 2018-2019 served as the first woman Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair.

Brenda Cressey, Past Trustee Chair or OUR Rotary Foundation

Brenda Cressey began her talk by taking about the importance of Rotarians doing and giving.  She believe we can do so much more at home and around the world when we support the Rotary Foundation. The Foundation permits us to leverage some of our "doing".  By giving to the Rotary Foundation we are creating a legacy, as our funds are helping to change and save lives at home and around the globe.  Every dollar we give to the foundation will impact another person's life, and this will be a part of our legacy. Our gifts are a message of hope and courage.

Rotarians "doing good in the world" started decades ago when the Rotary Club of Chicago put a public comfort station in the city.

Cressey reflected on her membership in Rotary.  She joined 33 years ago, the year the Berlin Wall fell. It was a major international change. She learned of the many ways Rotary has been involved in initiatives leading to a more peaceful planet.  Her impression of Rotary is that we focus more on hope over fear, and doing over apathy.  Every time we "do" we have stories we can tell about the changes we have created.  Our stories paint a picture of how people of all ages. What we do is based on our values and our passions. We must share of stories of making positive changes her at home and around the globe.

Meeting review:
  • President Ed Friedman called the meeting to order at 12:01
  • Phil Bush led us in reciting the 4-Way Test
  • Steve Whitman then introduced our speaker, Brenda Cressey see story above.
  • Bill Secord then presented Thomas with the children’s book that will go to the Kilton Library:

The Kilton book for November 10 is When Lola Visits by Michell Stirling, illus. by Aaron Asis.

Four starred reviews! In an evocative picture book brimming with the scents, tastes, and traditions that define a young girl’s summer with her grandmother, debut author Michelle Sterling and illustrator Aaron Asis come together to celebrate the gentle bonds of familial love that span oceans and generations.

For one young girl, summer is the season of no school, of days spent at the pool, and of picking golden limes off the trees. But summer doesn’t start until her lola—her grandmother from the Philippines—comes for her annual visit.

Summer is special. For her lola fills the house with the aroma of mango jam, funny stories of baking mishaps, and her quiet sweet singing in Tagalog. And in turn, her granddaughter brings Lola to the beach, to view fireworks at the park, and to catch fish at their lake.

When Lola visits, the whole family gathers to cook and eat and share in their happiness of another season spent together. Yet as summer transitions to fall, her lola must return home—but not without a surprise for her granddaughter to preserve their special summer a bit longer.

Save the Date:  December 12, 2022 to help organize holiday baskets at Listen!!
Angela will be sending information out about our family/families that will need gifts once Listen gives her the details. Holiday Basket Families

Email from Angela...see the message she sent for our kids

Hi everyone!  It is that time of year again, Listen Holiday Basket time!  We have our kids!!!!  This year it is back to normal which is SOOOOOO exciting.  If you already know about the Listen Holiday Baskets feel free to skip the next paragraph.

For members who don’t know about the Listen Holiday Baskets, here is a rundown.  Every year Listen has people apply for Christmas assistance.  Listen focuses on clothing since other organizations focus on toys.  Each child’s list has 5 clothing items along with sizes and colors and likes.  Each family also gets a $50 grocery gift card for Christmas dinner.  The club has a budget to purchase items and the grocery gift cards, but members also provide support.  Some members choose items from the lists to purchase, but if you want to help, but don’t share my enthusiasm for shopping 😊, you could make a monetary donation to the club (tax deductible) and I will purchase everything needed.

Due to the charities budget increase, we have 15 kids, so instead of listing them in this email I attached an excel spreadsheet with all the kids listed and their items, sizes and likes (I have reached out for clarification on the sizes of the two highlighted items).  If you want to pick items to purchase, just let me know what item(s) you will get, so that we don’t duplicate efforts.  If you would like to donate money, send me an email with the amount (so I can plan for the funds available and items needed) and we can either catch up sometime in the next few weeks or you can mail a check to Rotary Club of Lebanon Charities PO Box 132, Lebanon, NH 03766.

The deadline for getting me items purchased is December 1.  I will make sure I am at the in person meeting that day.  You can also drop items off at my office at 24 Airport Rd, 4th floor or email me when you have your items as we can coordinate a meet up.

Please remember this is all voluntary and I am the only person who knows, please do not feel obligated to do something if you do not wish.  Thank you in advance for your help!  This is one of my favorite times of year and projects!

Rotary Moment for the Week of November 14, 2022

WHAT KIND OF ROTARY FOUNDATION MEMORIAL AND TRIBUTE GIFTS ARE POSSIBLE?

You can honor a loved one in a meaningful way with a contribution to The Rotary Foundation that helps sustain our efforts around the world.
The easiest way is to start at rotary.org/donate and select the option to make a donation in honor or in memory of someone. You can contribute to the Annual Fund-SHARE, the World Fund, the Endowment, PolioPlus, the Disaster Response Fund, a specific area of focus, or a global grant.
As the donor, you’ll receive gift credit and a tax receipt (where applicable). The person you’re honoring or their family can be notified of your gift by email, or you can choose to print a notification and deliver it yourself.

During this holiday season, consider making a gift to the Rotary Foundation to honor someone you love.

Leveraging expertise: Mediators Beyond Borders International

Addressing conflict through a grassroots process that puts people at the center and involves the whole community is a way to create lasting change — and the approach that’s the basis of the partnership between Rotary and Mediators Beyond Borders International.

MBBI collaborates with Rotary clubs and districts around the world on peacebuilding efforts. The group brings its expertise in a mediation process defined by community collaboration and empowerment, and Rotary lends its credibility, trust, and deeply rooted local knowledge.

In partnership, the organizations create opportunities for difficult dialogues and train local facilitators, with a special focus on increasing women leadership in mediation and peacebuilding.

“It’s a multiplier effect,” says Scott Martin, a founding member of MBBI and Rotary Peace Fellow. “Together, we ask, ‘Who else needs to be included,’ help affected parties connect to the humanity in each other and themselves and facilitate conversations that can be lifesaving.”

MBBI also works regularly with clubs to focus inwards, a program called ‘Peace Conversation Facilitation’ (PCF) that helps members discuss challenging topics, and builds consensus around issues that affect their respective communities.

“We can each hear about a problem and each have a different understanding of it,” Martin says. MBBI can help clubs move beyond talking about an issue to creating the kinds of engagement that are healthy and productive for everyone involved.

Conflict is “an essential part of the human experience,” Martin says. The key, however, is to not ignore or sidestep it, but to address it, keep it from escalating into violence, and learn from it. This can transform the energy that drives conflict into more inclusive, constructive interactions, and ultimately safer, more connected, and more prosperous communities.

Martin says Rotary’s focus on working alongside affected people, business leaders, and coalescing with communities as a whole is very much in keeping with this ethos. “The new vision for Rotary is inspiring,” he says. “It’s bringing about change among ourselves and in the community, and measuring that impact.”
