Our Speaker today was Kathleen Harvard who educated us about Alzheimer's and other Dementias. She is an advocate for the Alzheimer's Association.

Alzheimer's Association is the umbrella organization for all memory disorders that are severe enough to interfere with daily life. Currently there are 6.9 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease and other dementia. By 2025 it is projected that this number will rise to 13 million. It is estimated that 11 million Americans are providing care to individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer's and other dementias.
Developing a dementia isn't a part of normal aging. But when Alzheimer's and other dementias are identified, they are a progressive disease that will progress and become a fatal disease. Kathleen shared that dementias are more common in blacks (twice as likely), hispanics (1 ½ as likely). Of all the cases, two thirds are women.
Memory disorders impacts are physical, emotional, social and financial, and impacts are felt by all who care for the individual diagnosed with the disease. 83% of caregivers are unpaid. 70% of the expenses associated with memory disorders are paid out-of-pocket.
Although there are no cures for Alzheimer's and other dementia, research is ongoing and has led to the development of two medications that can slow the progression. Research is ongoing, and some is funded by the Alzheimer's Association.

Ernst Oidtmann played the piano and led us in singing our Rotary welcome song. He then gave us a break from singing, but played a French folk dance song, Quadrille Square Dance. He found this song in a song book that a woman had purchased from the Henry Ford estate for $0.50. The receipt was still in the book.
David Crandall two visiting Rotarians from Pune NIBM, Dist 3131, India, Vandana Khanwalkar and Samir Khanwalkar. They are in the Upper Valley visiting their son and daughter in-law. Their son is a biomedical engineering doctoral student at Dartmouth, and their daughter in-law is working in finance from home. Samir shared that their club service projects have included building women's bathroom facilities (locker room, toilets and showers) for 13 police stations in their city. They have done 3 water projects to bring water closer to small villages. Their club was chartered in 2011.

Sponsors for Golf and Brew Fest: Ed Friedman reminded us that our Golf Tournament is now just 3 weeks away...we were all strongly urged to continue to ask for sponsorships (large and small) and we need raffle prizes too. We are behind were we were last year. Do what you can to round up sponsors and raffle prizes. It is hoped that the majority of us can help at the tournament too.
Change Over 2024: Reminder, Change Over will be Wednesday, June 24, 2024 in the evening. Save the date. We discussed doing a joint change over event with Hanover. Members present were in agreement that they support this as plan. Stay tuned for details.
From Charities:
At its meeting April 24, Charities Trustees approved a $1,000.00 donation to Plymouth Rotary for their housing and feeding work with Ukrainian refugee children in Poland.
We denied a request for assistance in landscaping from Maynard House in Hanover.
We adopted a Charities budget for 2024-25 which soon will be presented to Club members for their consideration, probably at either the May 2 or 9 meeting.
Rotary International Convention in Calgary, Alberta, Canada: Ron Bedell announced that the Rotary International Convention will be in Calgary in 2025. Marilyn Bedell has been asked to be the promotions chair for Rotary Zone 32. Ron shared that he has been to Calgary twice for the Calgary Stampede. Calgary is a great city in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies. The conventions will be June 21-25, 2025
This is the only Rotary International Convention that
will be held in North America for the next few years.
So, start planning. The Calgary committee has many
exciting events and pre & post trips planned for the
convention that will be revealed in detail on June 25th.
If you register during this year's Singapore Convention you
will receive a special rate of only $425 per person. That
will last only five days, so you must act quickly. The
dates are June 25 through June 29, 2024. After that
the rates will go up starting June 30, 2024.
REVEL White Mountains Marathon: We received the following request for help: "My name is Darrell Phippen and I head up the REVEL White Mountains Marathon that will be occurring in Conway on Sunday, May 5th. We are excited to bring marathon runners from all over the United States to your beautiful background. As we prepare for this event, we are in need of some volunteers to be at our expo on Saturday, May 4th at Ham Arena to hand out shirts and runner bibs. We are also in need of some volunteers to man our aid stations along the Kanc to provide fluids for our runners. I'd love to see if your club could help us out on this. I've emailed some of the individual clubs but wondered if you could send out an email to all clubs to see who would be willing to volunteer. In exchange for a group of volunteers, we would love to make a donation to the various clubs. If you have any questions, please let me know. We'd love to have you involved with the event. The 2 or 3 Rotary volunteers needed are for One or all the following dates Sat., May 4 , Fri., 12, and Sat., Sept. 28
Collections are 9-Noon in Lebanon May 4, July 14, and Sept 28. I would need 2-3 people to interview attendees and direct them where to go. Shifts can be the full 3 hours or I can do shorter shifts – as you know, the busiest time is the first hour or so.

A few volunteers are needed at the Food Pantry to open bags and stock shelves. Arrive anytime from 9:00 – 4:30, Monday thru Friday for the next 2 weeks. Stay as long as you like. Tim Guaraldi shared that his daughter Nicole is graduating from her dental hygienist and was very happy to announce she has 15 job offers.
Bruce Pacht was in Hyannis, MA for a Barbershop competition. He was delighted to announce that the Upper Valley Box Stars (mixed barbershop group) came in first place. This was the first, first place win for Bruce after a long tenure singing barbershop.
Angela Nelson is happy to be on the other side of tax season. She is now planning trips to 6 Flags, and a variety of concerts. She is having new floor installed in her home. She would recommend to others that if you plan to go this, go to a hotel till the work if done.

From Common Man for Ukraine/Rotary Club of Plymouth, NH
Leaving Ukraine, We Greet its Future

The feeling is bittersweet, with the good we've done balanced out by the ever-increasing need.
In many ways, we found this 9th relief delivery trip far more difficult than before; especially with Russia attacking a village just one day after our team delivered hope and food to its people.
We'll reflect more on the time spent in Ukraine in the coming days and weeks. But just as our resolve remains intact, our overall trip is ongoing as well.
After arriving last night in Zakopane, Poland, we spent the start of the new week today with smiles on our faces.
The inspiringly resilient kids participating in April's Children of Ukraine Health Retreatsession have already been here for two weeks -- and the positive impacts are clear as day.
Each month, this 3-week trauma counseling retreat welcomes 30+ children of Ukrainian soldiers killed or missing in action.
Through individual and group counseling activities, the kids begin their healing journeys and build out their coping skills.
These children will help rebuild a free Ukraine.
Our program -- run by volunteering certified teachers, doctors and counselors -- costs about $1,000 per child per session.

The Carter School Partners with Rotary to Scale Up Peacebuilding

The Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter School at George Mason University, the top-ranked national public institution for peace and conflict resolution, has partnered with Rotary International, one of the largest global membership service organizations, to provide education and develop modalities to assist Rotary clubs in promoting local, regional, and global peace.
For nearly a year, Carter School faculty have met with Rotary to identify areas in which their missions overlap and where each organization may benefit from the expertise of the other.
Through this partnership, the Carter School and Rotary will incubate new peacebuilding ideas and accelerate existing ideas to make them more effective. The Carter School will also assist in developing replicable modalities of peacebuilding – peacebuilding action “templates” that can be duplicated and applied to address the needs of different conflicts.
