Board of Directors Meeting — Wednesday, March 9, 2022 at 5 PM (NEW TIME AND DAY)

Moorings

We welcomed back Paul Tierney from his long-term medical leave...and he is feeling much better.  We then tried to help him fix a Zoom issue that arose.

Phil Bush, our returning member joined us today, and was teasingly asked if Jim Damren prodded him to return with a hockey stick.  He replied that his energetic dog that caused him to have a conversation with Jim.  This lead to Jim encouraging him to return.

Ernst Oidtmann told us he had a growth (leukoplakia) beneath his tongue removed yesterday.

Cindy Jermone called in from her car on her way to Dummerston.  She closes on the sale of her Enfield condo next week.

Ron Bedell had his first cataract surgery this morning and felt well enough to join us for the meeting.  He arrived a DHMC at 6:20 AM and was home before 9 AM.  He received great care from the ophthalmology team at the Outpatient Surgical Center.  His eye patch was a clear plastic, so hard to make pirate joke...ARRRRR.

Meeting review:
  • 12:02 p.m. – Secretary Marilyn rang the Club’s bell; President Hank Clarke brought the meeting to order.
  • President Hank welcomed Phil Bush back to the club.  He is a former member of Lebanon-Riverside.  Jim Damren spoke to Phil about becoming involved again and so here he is!  Paul Tierney has returned from a medical leave of absence.  Jimmy Brock is a regular as far as we are concerned, not a guest.
  • Jimmy volunteered to recite the Four-Way Test of the things we Think, Say or Do.  He was EXCELLENT!!
  • 22 folks have signed on to this meeting; special welcome to Jean Wulpern as well.
  • We then covered a variety of Club business.
  • Club Business
    • Upcoming Projects
      • Listen Community Dinners – They are resuming in April.  Go to the sign-up page at Listen’s website.  2nd Tuesday in April is Lebanon Rotary’s first opportunity.
        • Our Club will be back to doing meals on even months beginning in April.  Sign up to help on the Listen Web Page.

Here is the information we got from Larry Lowndes, Community Dinner Manager:

Your team is keeping the same calendar date - the 2nd Tuesday of even months. So that's April 12th. We just ask now that individuals of your team sign up for each cook-date they plan on attending. This helps us with reporting requirements.

Previously, we have not asked team members to do this. Now however, your registering for events will greatly help us organize, relieve back-end data entry, help facilitate monthly reporting, and will allow us, if necessary, to provide Covid contact tracing. When you arrive at the dining hall, you'll need to punch-in when you arrive and punch-out when you leave. The kiosk is right where you hang your belongings, in the 'Dry Storage" room by the dishwasher.

Please visit  the webpage created exclusively for your team at  http://vhub.at/lebrot before your next visit. We recommend bookmarking it in your web browser and using the address to access your account. It will save you and us time. Also, please consider sharing the link with other members (or potential members) of your team.

Once on your team's webpage, you will see the dates that your team is registered for. If you personally plan on attending any of the events, click the “Sign Up” button next to the dates (or cancel events that you can no longer attend). At that point you'll be asked to set up your account if you haven't done so already. Be sure when asked to click the checkbox stating that you are interested in the Community Dining Hall.

If you are already registered on Volunteerhub, be sure to update your Listen 'affiliations'. You'll find them after you sign in, on the upper right when you click on your name. By doing so, you can find classes and other information.

If you have any questions, please contact Larry Lowndes.

As always, thank you for your support and all you do for Listen Community Services!

          Best regards,

          Larry

2022 Foam Collection Day in Lebanon

Lebanon, NH

Sustainable Lebanon is once again partnering with the Lebanon Rotary Club to offer a polystyrene (Styrofoam) collection day on Saturday, April 16, from 9 - 11 am at 227 Mechanic Street in Lebanon (behind Jake’s Coffee). The event will take place rain or shine.

Various types of foam will be collected for recycling, including polystyrene #6 (EPS), polyethylene #4 (EPE), and #6 XPS insulation board foam which will be driven to a recycling facility in Massachusetts. This includes packaging foam used for TVs, computers, and appliances, as well as foam coolers. Food service foam, including clean food containers and egg cartons will be collected and recycled separately. We ask that all tape and labels be removed and all foam is clean, dry, and free of food residue or other debris.

PLEASE NOTE: Foam peanuts should be brought directly to the UPS Store at True Value Hardware in Hanover.

Additional information shared about Styrofoam:

Marilyn is working with DG Mike Carrier and two other DGs that cover clubs in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, and Cindy Heath to broaden the collection opportunities with other Rotary Club in Northern New England.  There’s a company in NJ that renders Styrofoam into ingots (using a “densifier”) the ingots may be stacked using far less space than the raw Styrofoam until one has enough for a tractor-trailer.  Perhaps the Gilford Sanitation Dept could be a hub for collection and ingot-forming.  Apparently, there’s a company in Quebec that may be using these ingots as home insulation.  There’s another firm in MA turning Styrofoam into picture frames which, when done, can be re-densified!! Marilyn is learning more about Styrofoam than she ever envisioned learning.

Phil Bush: Phil is also a member of Sustainable Lebanon.  He reported that the last time, we accepted a lot of stuff that wasn’t recycled and is now resting in a member’s cellar.  The news releases this time will LIST things that are acceptable.  As to the trade-off between the fossil fuels moving the Styrofoam—Phil reports that it’s still a net gain to do the recycling.

Paul Tierney:  Are we tied into any of the really big users, like the medical facilities?  Marilyn is speaking to D-H and Cindy is talking with the others.

Phil Bush:  He shared that Sustainable Lebanon has hired Jennifer Grant to be its part-time program manager.

Paul: Have we spoken to the Hartford and Norwich waste folks to try and remove Styrofoam from their flow?  Marilyn:  Initially, we are working with individuals and setting up systems to deal with higher volumes.

Ahmad:  I reached out to Lebanon’s Solid Waste group. They recommended that we use the high school as a collection location.  They would be willing to talk with us about what they are looking at in terms of overall solid waste, electricity generation, etc.  Marilyn will pass along the information to Jane Mason for a possible program and will also mention the information to Cindy Heath.
  • Rise Against Hunger – Friday, April 22; Mascoma Valley Regional High School.
    • Truck arrives 10:30 am; packaging starts at noon. Rotarians may come whenever they want,
  • Fundraisers
    • Poker Room – John Yacavone
      • TROUBLE!!  Someone else besides John Yacavone has to get fingerprints taken – his were rejected!!  The dates will have to be changed from what we had scheduled.  John will pursue next steps. Now we all want to know why John didn't pass the fingerprint test. smiley

    • Golf tournament – Ed Friedman

  • We are in full search mode for sponsors and teams.  Reach out to your friends, associates and businesses to increase the sponsorships.  Ed will distribute forms for solicitation.  Tournament is May 26 at Eastman.  Volunteers are needed especially to help with break down – too many of us disappear at the end, so this year, let’s have more than just Ed, Bruce Bergeron, Marilyn and Ron.  Break down tents, tables, etc.
  • Jimmy’s granddaughter graduates from Princeton on May 24.  It’s likey that family celebrations will preclude Jimmy’s ability to be with us.
    • Brew Fest, September 3 — Hank Clark
  • One meeting of the committee so far.  Next meeting perhaps at the end of March.  We bought 1,000 glasses, so we won’t run out.  Will K is dealing City approvals; Hank with the state.  John is working on entertainment and food trucks.  We won’t put a push on sponsors/advertisers for this event until after the golf tournament in May.  Hank feels the only way we’ll make money is with more advertisers and sponsors.  We are thinking of running off copies of last year’s programs to use as advertising enticements.
John:  We had 522 participants last year.  We ran out of everything but beer.
JoAnne:  Will we have posters?  John:  Yes, Bruce B is taking care of that.
Hank:  Tickets will say “Admit One.”:  Electronic tickets will be ONLY one for $30 and not two for $50.  Also, NO REFUNDS.
    • Paul:  Have we though of inviting Suellen Griffin back for the day?  Hank: She had other commitments last year.  She was a good help to us as a consultant.  Marilyn:  She remains on the newsletter list and continues to read it.
Hank says we’re probably going to need more volunteers than we had last year.

Happy Thoughts/Concerns

John Yacavone:  Letter from APD’s new development director in charge “Smile” (a dental program for underserved kids) will be going too Hank and Bruce.  John remembers it and endorses our participation.

Cindy Jerome:  A fellow Rotarian, Rudy and I, doing a mental health trip to Barbados leaving Saturday for a week.  Time for "toes in the water."

Paul Tierney:  Has a $10 update.  My son, Ryan has moved to Denver where his wife’s parents live.  My two granddaughters (27 months old) are identical twins — incredibly active and fun. Ryan bought a house out there; sold his house in Oakland in 3 days.  One bid with no conditions and a huge deposit – he made a ton of money on the sale.  He is still with Apple – convinced the higher-ups to retain him during a huge project.  Michelle, his wife is pregnant with a 3rd child due June 1.  Carol plans to head out after school finishes.  They were here in July for almost a month which was terrific.

Tim Guaraldi:  I will pay a $5 fine to know why John’s fingerprints were rejected.

Hank Clarke brags: After complaining for several years, we had heat pumps installed so we won’t be suffering with humidity like we have in the past.  It’s a ductless system, says Hank.

Marion Steiner:  Back from North Carolina, dealt with snow in Boston.  Arrived 12:30 AM Saturday, instead of 11 PM on Friday.  Got to see grandbabies for the first time in 6 years.

Dave Crandall went ice fishing at Lake Winnipesauke with his son.  Caught and released several fish.  Check out Dave’s Facebook page for pictures.

Paul Tierney:  What is T-N doing at Ledyard in Norwich?
Ed Friedman:  They are doing renovations and making it code-compliant.  Unsure who owns the building. T-N will be working next at the branch in Hanover.

Rotary International News

Rotary International
25-Feb-2022

"It is a tragic and sad time for the people of Ukraine and the world.

At Rotary, we are deeply concerned by the deteriorating situation in Ukraine and the escalating loss of life and humanitarian hardship there. Continued military action against Ukraine will not only devastate the region, but also risk spreading tragic consequences across Europe and the world.

As one of the world’s largest humanitarian organizations, we have made peace the cornerstone of our global mission. We join the international community in calling for an immediate cease fire, withdrawal of Russian forces, and a restoration of diplomatic efforts to resolve this conflict through dialogue.

In the past decade, Rotary clubs in Ukraine, Russia and nearby countries have transcended national differences and have actively engaged in peace-building projects to promote goodwill and to marshal assistance for the victims of war and violence. Today, our thoughts are with our fellow Rotary members and others in Ukraine coping with these tragic events. Rotary International will do everything in its power to bring aid, support and peace to the region."

&

From a recent communication from RIVP Valarie Wafer on the ongoing emergency in Ukraine:

In response to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, the Rotary Foundation has made available the Disaster Response Fund as the main avenue for contributions.
All donations made online at Disaster Response Fund | My Rotary, including the use of available district designated funds (DDF), need to be received by April 30, 2022. Grant applications to take advantage of the funds will be available now through June 30, 2022. This will be the main avenue for Rotary Foundation support, but Rotary and Rotaract clubs are also encouraged to create their own responses to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.
In addition to the support provided through the Disaster Response Fund, the Foundation is coordinating with partners and regional leaders, exploring effective solutions to the increased humanitarian needs. You will find a comprehensive list of projects at this link, with the contact details and websites.
Thank you for all that you do to promote peace.

The Rotary Foundation --WHAT IS SHARE?

Through Rotary’s SHARE system, Rotary districts share in the decision-making process by choosing which Rotary Foundation programs they wish to support and participate in. The SHARE system is the mechanism by which Rotary Foundation funding is distributed worldwide. Through the SHARE system, contributions to The Rotary Foundation are transformed into both District Designated Funds (DDF) — the funds your district can allocate — and to the World Fund — the funds the Trustees allocate. By giving to either Annual Fund-SHARE or Endowment Fund-SHARE we support both local and international efforts!

You can help our district and support amazing projects by giving to the Annual Fund – SHARE designation.
