Moorings

Prior to the start of the meeting we talked about fall foliage and how muted it is here in the valley, but it sounds like it is brilliant in the upper elevations of the Green Mountain.  Marilyn Bedell heard it is spectacular near Pico on Route 4.  The Upper Valley was socked in with fog this morning and towards the end of our meeting, the sun appeared, and the sky is a stunning blue.

Hank Clarke shared that he is heading to Woodstock, VT to have lunch with friends at the Woodstock Inn.  John Yacavone talked about heading to Woodstock, NH for a ride on the Hobo Railroad, then plans to eat at the Woodstock Inn and Brewery.

Joy Gobin reported that although Lebanon has reports of CoVid-19 in the school district, there haven't been cases at LHS.  91% of teachers are vaccinated.

Tim Guaraldi reported that he his back from Arizona but Elk-less. He said they did a lot of hiking.

We talked about tires and how few had been found during river clean-up compared to the first years we did this service project.

Club Business and Announcements

Our meeting was called to order at 12:03 PM with the ringing of the Rotary Bell.

Hank lead a business meeting.  The following topics were covered prior to adjourning at 12:33 PM.

  • Upper Valley Flu Clinics — Enfield and Bradford
The Public Health Council of the Upper Valley is running several community flu clinics again this year. Club member Dan Affeldt is helping to organize clinics in Enfield, New Hampshire, and Bradford, Vermont. He is asking club members to volunteer again to help with registration and traffic flow each day.

The drive-through flu vaccine clinic in Enfield is scheduled for Friday, October 8, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the La Salette Shrine. (6 people signed up, you can still come if you are available.) What you need to know....

Thank you for offering to help with the PHC Community Flu Vaccine Clinic in Enfield on Friday, October 8th. The clinic should begin at 3:00 pm and will run until 6:00 pm. We will be setting up at the LaSalette Shrine parking lot, creating one way traffic from the entrance around to the exit.

I plan to arrive at 2:00 pm to begin the set-up, which includes setting up tents, tables and chairs, putting up signs, getting registration ready, and staging clinic supplies for the medical students. I would love to have a little help in the first phase, so if a few of you can come by 2:00 pm or soon after, I would appreciate it. Otherwise, please plan to arrive by 2:40 pm. Once we get closer to the start of the clinic, I will deploy folks to roles at registration and traffic control.

When you arrive, please park across the street, behind the brick house or on the grass all around the brown barn.

The drive-through flu vaccine clinic in Bradford is scheduled for Wednesday, October 13, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Oxbow High School. (4 people signed up, more help needed.  Use the link below if you can help)

  • Brew Fest Update
Hank Clarke shared the we are still waiting about $1,250 in payment for ads and sponsors.  Some payments may have arrived since he last got an update from our treasurer, Angela Nelson. Ernst Oidtmann announced that since Cioffredi Physical Therapy did not make the program book so we returned their money for the advertisement they had paid. Despite this, they returned the payment as a donation to the club...a very nice surprise.  David Crandall reported that we still has a $100 gift card from the Co-op that we need to decide how we will use it. There will be a follow-up meeting on October 18, 2021 to discuss what we did well and what we could do to improve the event.  If you have thoughts about this, please send them to Hank Clarke so he can share them with the Brew Fest Committee.  Hank shared that he still believes our net income will be between $18,00 and $19,000.
  • 100th Anniversary
David Crandall wanted to assure the club that the committee is working hard to come up with projects for club members to consider. They are working on 3 ideas and may add a 4th after learning of plans for the Westboro Railyard.  A group will be going to Randolph to see as musical park that was erected by the Randolph Sunrise Club.;  and other will be going to the Westboro Yard Block Party (see information about this below).  Cindy Jerome shared that David is working hard to get the group to finalize proposals, and that he should be commended for his leadership in overseeing this work. So stay tuned for a detailed report coming our way soon.

  • Sad News — Garlan Hoskin's Resignation
Marilyn Bedell received this message from Garlan Hoskins.  With feeling of sadness it is being shared with all of you:

Dear Madam Secretary Marilyn,

I have enjoyed over 40 years as a Rotarian and have now come to the conclusion that it’s time to resign.  I am not able to fully carry out the responsibilities of being a member.
I will continue to carry out my responsibilities to the Foundation on an individual basis.

My best wishes to the Rotary Club of Lebanon as it continues making life better for the community.

Best Regards,
Garlan

Dear Marilyn,  Here are 3 more pictures from the Mascoma River Cleanup now 8 days ago. These were taken by me at the end of the rail trail just upstream from where the river goes under the Terry Dudley bridge and show the Riley family,Bruce James and Shaun Mulholland.

Dear Marilyn,  here follows a quick update on the MRC (Mascoma River Cleanup).
There were 30 participants with 4 Rotaractors from the Hanover Club. Almost the entire Conservation Commission took part. The food may have been the main enticement although the beautiful weather may also have played a role. We collected 0.6 ton of trash,  0.12 ton of metal and 5 tires.

  • Food Drives for Listen
Tim reported that the Lebanon Co-op will not permit food drives until construction at the Lebanon store is completed.  We may be able to do one at the Hanover Co-op but Tim will check with the Rotary Club of Hanover to make sure this would be OK with them if we did a food drive there.
  • November is Rotary Foundation Month
Ron Bedell shared that a letter to all members will be going out on October 15, 2021 from the Foundation Committee.
  • Our Interact Club at LHS
Joy reported that 11 students joined the first meeting.  They are working on a project to knit blankets for children hospitalize at DHMC/CHAD. The students would like to help make a meal for the Listen Community Dinners too.
  • On-Line Auction
Bruce Bergeron let us know that we have a variety of gift cards leftover from the Golf Tournament.  He will organize an on-line auction for us to bid on the cards.  Stay tuned for details.
  • Haiti
Rudy Fedrizzi talked about plans by a physician, Peter Wright; and architect, Jack Wilson to do projects in Haiti. They both have a long history of working in Haiti. There plan is to come up with projects that will be done as long term projects. Rudy shared that there may be opportunities to work with the local Rotary Club in Haiti that is near the town they want to help. The town in Haiti was 8 miles from the epicenter of the earthquake, and was totally destroyed.  Jack Wilson has designed a house that could be erected for $300, and designed to withstand earthquakes. Wright and Wilson have reached out the local Rotary Club that has hopes of finding funds to develop a vocational center.  Rudy hopes to have Wright and Wilson speak at an upcoming Rotary meeting.  Rudy shared that there may be opportunities for Rotarians to accompany them on trips to help with projects.
  • Columbia
Ahmad Haidari shared information about a talk he went to about immigration and Columbia.  A speaker talked about Brain Damage that results due to trauma and displacement.  Ahmad thought have the speaker come to a Rotary meeting by Zoom might make for a good program.
Via Google, I found this information about the talk that was given at Dartmouth:

La Casa in conjunction with FUERZA-FARMWORKERS-FUND, Co-FIRED and The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College, are planning a panel discussion on social justice and community titled "What is Home Without "Community"? Stories of Displacement, Resilience and the Immigrant Experience...

Daniel Londoño has a Master's degree in clinical Neuropsychology. His research focuses on trauma, neurocognition, and psychopathology with victims of displacement. He is a Neuropsychology professor at San Buenaventura University in Medellin and a clinical research associate at Medical Device's Contract Research Association. Professor Londoño will share his experiences and findings in "Brain Trauma and Development: Brain Functioning on Victims of Displacement of Sociopolitical Violence and Oppression in Colombia." Professor Londoño has extensive experience working with this phenomenon and its side effects on mental health. He will also address how individual trauma impacts the collective mind.

Rotary pledges $97 million at Global Citizen Live

RI President-elect Jennifer Jones announced Rotary’s $97 million pledge for sustainable projects during Global Citizen Live, a star-studded 24-hour broadcast with events and performances across six continents. The event 25 September aimed to unite people to take action to defend the planet, end the COVID-19 pandemic, defeat poverty, provide education for all children, and promote equity and justice for all. In Paris, where Jones pledged Rotary’s support, thousands of people gathered at the iconic Champ de Mars near the Eiffel Tower to see performances from Elton John, Ed Sheeran, Black Eyed Peas, and more. Read more

POLIO NEWS, September 2021

Dear polio eradication supporter,

During last week’s United Nations General Assembly meeting, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), represented by Rotary International, proudly co-sponsored an event promoting gender equality across global health efforts.

Building on the GPEI’s commitments made at the Generation Equality Forum earlier this year, this event called for governments and global health organizations to continue working to lower genderrelated barriers across all sectors of the health world. The GPEI would like to thank His Excellency Mr Franz Fayot (Minister of Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs, Luxembourg) for recognizing the programme’s commitments to ending polio and empowering women.

Women have long been at the forefront of the global effort to reach all children with polio vaccines, and the GPEI’s new strategy, “Delivering on a Promise”, strives to acknowledge their impact and support their crucial work.

On 24 October 2021, the GPEI is pleased to be celebrating World Polio Day by recognizing that promise and the future that it holds. Please join us in reflecting on the progress made since the GPEI’s inception in 1988 – billions of polio vaccines delivered to children worldwide and countless cases of paralysis averted – while staying cognizant of the work that lays ahead to achieve a polio-free world.
