Upcoming Programs/Speakers
  • December 10, 2020 — Status of the Lebanon Police Department
  • Meeting Schedule for December…NOTE CHANGE IN TIME AND DAY OF WEEK FOR TWO MEETINGS — Ron Bedell
We do not have a scheduled zoom meeting between December 10th and January 7th, almost a month.  So, this would be a good time to try some different days of the week and times to see if we can get better attendance.  We therefore are adding Wednesday December 16 at 7:30 A.M. and Tuesday December 29th at NOON to our zoom schedule.

Moorings
  • It’s in the 70s in Bermuda today, says Jimmy.
  • Joanne spoke today at length to Caleb Wolfe about an international project in Kenya.  Yippee!
  • Dan informed us of his bloodlines in Minnesota, the residents of which, he claims, speaks accentless English, although Bruce maintained that his college roommate from Ohio used to say the same about Ohioans.
  • The foundation for Paul’s garage at his homesite in Meriden will be poured tomorrow, Paul having received a building permit in the nick of time.  Two things Paul wanted us to know about the permitting process – (1) they don’t supply sources to figure out how to comply with the requirements they ask us to meet, and (2) we’re not sure what exactly it is that they want!  It’s a frustrating process.  Jimmy assured Paul that it’s the same in Bermuda.
  • Will Koppenheffer once again showed us his dog Lucy who had been attending many of our meetings.

  • Financial Review of year ending 6/30/20 – Angela Nelson
Angela Nelson provided an end of the year (June 30, 2020) review of our finances for both the club and Lebanon Charities, Inc.  The documents she shared will be sent to members by separate e-mail.

Club Finances
Angela shared the balance sheet for the club.  We operate on a cash basis, not putting things in our books until we possess the cash. Angela shared the profit and loss statement.  We were pretty close to break-even. We’ve been tweaking the dues structure to cover expenses without putting dues too high.  The board is now looking at the year beginning July 1, 2021.

Lebanon Charities
Data as of 30 June 2020
Our Charities Fund has  $197,210.81 divided between:
Community fund - $49,700+
Mollica spending account - ~$2,515
Mollica Investment account - ~$108,800
Charities account - $36,212 plus $4,000+ already allocated and therefore reserved for current fountain projects in the city.

~$88,000 is the amount available to spend.

There was a discussion about the definition of restricted funds. This will be discussed by the finance committee and they will provide guidance to the Charities Trustees. There was a suggestion that it might be the right time to convert from reporting on a cash basis to an accrual basis moving forward.  Angela will discuss this the finance committee and they will make a recommendation to the Charities board.

If you have questions once you review the documents, refer those questions to Angela Nelson. A motion was made by Hank Clark and seconded by Paul Tierney to accept the reports as reported by Angela Nelson at the meeting today.  This motion passed unanimously in the affirmative.

It was noted that the Community Fund is invested in CDs at Vanguard.
  • Rotary Foundation Donations
The 23 members who donated to The Rotary Foundation contributed over $5,000.  The rest of the members usually donate in the Spring.  As a result, three members received Paul Harris recognition as follows:

Happy Thoughts/Concerns

Jane Mason is celebrating a birthday that has a zero in it.  She reflected that she remembered when Steve Whitman announced this milestone, and she thought he looked pretty good for an "old guy"...making her reflect on what we would be saying about her. She will make a donation to the Rotary Foundation too in honor of this milestone.

Jimmy Brock let us know that his daughter is on the other side of a major surgery. Her surgery was performed at Mass General.  She is recuperating at Jimmy's condo in Quechee. She is making good progress and enjoying the quiet of Vermont.

Paul Tierney shared is twin grandchildren are now 11 months old, and becoming very active...learning to walk. They have red hair and blue eyes. He gave us an update on his post and beam home that will be built in Meriden. He has his "hot rod" up and running.  It is ready to be inspected.  We will be hearing him on the road.

Ernst Oidtmann decided to pay his dues for 6 months.  He’s been going through history disks of Lebanon Rotary where he found film of the September 6, 2008, river clean-up movie:  38 minutes long filmed by Paul Shannon (another late Lebanon Rotarian).  Paul capture removal of an enormous boiler using a backhoe and a deep sea diver.  This afternoon, two friends and Ernst walked up to Rix Ledges – between Hanover and Lebanon – a remarkable and interesting piece of land with many enormous moss-covered boulders. Click Here to learn more about the location.

Melissa Mooney sends a long distance happy thought.  Congratulations to her son Ryan, the recipient of the Hartford Area Career Technical Center Rotary Recognition Award.

“Stay safe, stay distant, and wear masks.”

  • From the Hanover Rotary Club

December 2, 2020

Dear Friends of the Hanover Rotary Club,

Thank you for your past support of the Hanover Rotary Club's Auction Gala.  Due to the COVID pandemic we were not able to have an auction in 2020, but we are writing to let you know about our current efforts to support our community during this difficult time.

For decades holiday shoppers in Hanover heard the sound of Rotarians ringing sleigh bells as they walked along Main Street. Since 2000, the bell ringers of the Hanover Rotary Club raised over $100,000 for LISTEN Community Services and the Heating Helpers program. And Heating Helpers DOES make a difference!  Last year LISTEN provided 400 households in the Upper Valley with $130,000 in heating assistance.  This year, with the COVID pandemic, fewer people will be out on the streets of Hanover.  Yet the number of families needing heating assistance is likely to increase!

The Hanover Rotary Club has the ideal solution to this problem: Virtual Bell Ringing! It’s now possible to donate to LISTEN’s Heating Helpers program from the comfort of your home!  Just visit our GoFundMe page to donate:  https://charity.gofundme.com/o/en/campaign/fuel-assistance-listen

Our 62 club members have filled the pot with $13,000 already and we’re challenging the community to match that amount.  If we get there we’ll be able to provide 80 families with warm homes this winter!

To see our Club members and friends doing their Virtual Bell Ringing please visit this YouTube playlist: Bell ringing videos

You can also donate via Venmo at "HR-Charities" or send a check to Hanover Rotary Charities P.O. Box 381, Hanover, NH 03755.

Thank you for your support of Hanover Rotary and LISTEN!

&

Want to give Lebanon Rotary Club an update on Hanover Rotary’s bell ringing this year.  We’re going “virtual”.  Wayne Gerson is working on a press release with the details, which we’ll get to you tomorrow or Wednesday.  In the meantime, here are some links you might find of interest.

If any Lebanon Rotarians want to support us with a video, we are reaching outside the club for submissions.  If he can figure out how, Willem Lange agreed to do one, so has Clay Adams of Mascoma Bank and Kyle Fisher of LISTEN.  Working on others.  Videos should be 15-20 seconds long, and can be emailed to me.  If they are too large, might have to use something like Dropbox to save them to the cloud.  I then turn them into YouTube videos and add them to the playlist.

Paul Tierney shared that he received a note from Listen saying that they have an anonymous donor willing to match donations 2:1.  Bruce reported that Charities received an appeal from Listen’s executive director which will be discussed at Charities’ next meeting

  • Thank you from Epilogos — From their Newsletter

Savers FunDrive

This fall we held 2 Savers fundraisers to benefit our Big Friend/Little Friend Program

In August Epilogos Board members got lots of help from Louise Zerba, Alex Zerba, and 2 Rotary Clubs in Keene, NH - Elm City Rotary and the Keene Rotary. They collected bags and bags of clothing and soft goods and donated them to our cause.
Then in October, Bruce Bergeron and his fellow Rotarians from Lebanon, NH collected over 3200 pounds of materials, and drove the bags to Manchester for the fund drive.
Board members, with the assistance of former trip members, friends of Epilogos, and Rotary members provided lots of help unloading the trucks at Savers - thank you all!
The total collection was almost 5400 pounds of goods and $1155 was raised to benefit Big Friend/Little Friend!
Thank you to everyone who made a donation - and remember to keep cleaning out those closets and save your donations for 2021!
And, Thank you Rotarians for your dedication to this project - we truly appreciate i
t!

  • Update on Poker Room — John Yacavone
History:  We have been scheduled by the State of NH to participate in the new law requiring that 35% of earnings from 6 poker rooms in the state must go to charity.  Last year, we were allocated 10 days to receive 35% of the Lebanon poker room’s profits.  We earned $17,00 from this.

The new contact person at the state will not be contacting us until early in December with the necessary paperwork.  She set aside March 6-8 and 12-15 for us to participate.  The Cub must file paperwork and then have someone show up to sign in once a day during the period.

Pursuing our mentoring moments
Posted on

Elizabeth Usovicz

By Elizabeth Usovicz, Rotary International director-elect

When I speak with Rotary members about the importance of mentoring future leaders, I often hear, “I would love to be a mentor, but I don’t have the time.”

My response is a question and this story.

When was the last time you created a mentoring moment?

Last year, I participated in a networking event for students at a local university. The goal was for them to practice introducing themselves to business professionals, engage in conversation for a few minutes, and transition politely into another conversation.

One of the students I met was studying fashion merchandising. I asked how she became interested in merchandising, and she told me, “It started with a mistake I made at work.”

She worked part-time in an upscale department store, selling women’s apparel. One day, a customer bought the outfit that a mannequin was wearing. Rather than leave an undressed mannequin on the sales floor, the student selected and dressed the mannequin in a new outfit.

Creating a mentoring moment

When she reported to work the following week, she was summoned to a meeting with the regional buyer for women’s clothing. “I thought I was in trouble, that I was going to lose my job,” the student told me. Instead, the buyer turned the meeting into a mentoring moment. The buyer explained that clothing selections for store mannequins were a corporate decision – and also, that the clothing she selected was selling well.

The buyer told the student that she had talent, informed her about the fashion merchandising program at the university, and encouraged her to apply. The buyer continues to take brief moments to mentor and encourage the student. “She wants to hire me when I complete my degree,” she told me proudly.

Mentoring moments are memorable and empowering

Her story was the most memorable introduction I heard that day – but what impressed me even more was the forward-thinking buyer. She not only recognized the student’s talent, but also had the courage and confidence in her own abilities to take the intentional step to be a mentor and role model. She set an example for the student, who hopefully will see herself as a mentor and role model for other young women as she progresses in her own career.

This mentoring moment is relevant to Rotary.

We are all potential role models and mentors for young Rotary and Rotaract members. It takes our intention, not our time, to recognize and encourage their talents in our in-person and virtual interactions.

Young leaders are watching and learning from the things we think, say, and do. Mentoring moments are an empowering step in opening opportunities for this next generation of talented Rotary leaders.

Research has found that clubs with mentor programs have a better time retaining members. Take the Mentoring Basics course in the learning center to learn the benefits and responsibilities of mentoring adult professionals.
