Moorings

Prior to Bruce Pacht joining our meeting we talked about all the weather emergencies across the country. By the time Bruce arrived we were discussing ways to save the planet. Jimmy Brock mentioned that a fusion reactor was close to reality.  Hank Clarke believes that an electric car that charges in 15 minutes with a 500-mile range would be the end of internal combustion engines.  Jimmy would like to see trucks barreling along I-95 with no drivers.

On the lighter side Hank Clarkes shared information about the new Osher classroom at One Court Street. There was talk of enchiladas and poker. We welcomed Ahmad Haidari from Seattle, and Jimmy Brock from Bermuda.  Will's dog Lucy was lounging by the couch. It must be to warm to be on the couch.

On to our meeting:
  • The bell rang at 12:02 pm to bring the meeting to order.
  • President Hank welcomed everyone.
  • Bill Babineau led us through the Rotary 4-Way Test.
We didn't have a guest speaker today. We spent time most of your time together talking about our upcoming Brew Fest.

  • Hybrid Meetings
Hybrid Meetings — Update from Cindy Jerome
Hospital is still counting on the end of September.  But, there’s a pretty good chance that the hospital cannot complete the work so we can have an in-person meeting by September 30. Once equipment is in place we will transition to hybrid meeting.

Price to set up equipment for hybrid meetings came in at $21,000.  Lifecare can cover almost half of that and would welcome help from Rotary. This will be discussed by the Charities Trustees.

  • Woodlands Next Week
As of September 2, 20121, we can still be at the Woodlands next week.  Please wear masks unless eating or drinking.  If we return to Dwinell, we should mask similarly.   Cindy Jerome has a spreadsheet that shows who showed a vaccination card the last time.  Jane Mason will make sure speakers are vaccinated.  See information above about coming to the Woodlands or Harvest Hill.

  • 100th Anniversary
Ernst shared that to build a pavilion on the Greenway would require permission from the Department of Transportation.  He will explore and find out if this is possible of this to stay on the list of potential projects for our centennial.
  • Other Club Business
Cal Wolfe let us know that Emmah and her father now have permission to use an acre of land to start a new garden.

Ed Friedman volunteered to take minutes for Marilyn at next week's meeting as she will be traveling to Up State New York. Marilyn will produce the newsletter when she returns.

Rudy Fedrizzi graciously provided some updates on Covid-19 vaccines.

John Yacavone asked — Rudy if there was any updates booster shots?
Rudy — Starting last week in September, VT hopes to be setting up clinics for both NH and VT people.  Question is whether it will be 6 or 8 months since the first shots.  Also, younger kid shots coming along.

Marilyn Bedell asked – Will flu shots be at the same time?
Rudy — here will be free shots in VT, but we haven’t heard specifics. Both can be given at the same time.

Hank Clarke asked — Will people have to prove their eligibility?
Rudy — We have a pretty robust registry for VT citizens.  If you didn't get your shot in VT, you would need to show your card.  Right now, shots are only for immune-compromised folks (for whom this would be a third dose, not a booster), but Rudy believes it will be open for boosters after September 20.  These are not specific to the Delta virus – they are the same.  A new variant seems to be less affected by the vaccine, but the Delta virus seems to be out-competing the new one.

Rudy asked this question which her then answered — Should we use boosters when many haven’t been vaccinated even once?
Rudy — There’s talk about a new vaccine on a yeast-based recombinant platform that’s cheap and can be made by the billions, being developed in Texas – could be the “best” one developed so far in a few weeks or months.  There’s already production in the hundreds of millions even though it hasn’t yet been officially approved.  There’s hope that this could be for Africa, South America and Asia.

Rudy hasn’t seen any uptick in the numbers of folks being vaccinated despite the new official approval of Pfizer.  Full authorization for children should go a long way to increasing the numbers of vaccinated people in the population.

John – Is the booster only for Pfizer and Moderna?
Rudy — Nope, it’s for both.  Also, it seems a booster for the Johnson and Johnson will be coming.

  • Happy dollars or Concerns
JoAnn — A sad dollar:  On her Friendship Exchange, she was with 9 other folks with whom she became close.  She reports that Skip Smith has died very quickly from pancreatic cancer.  He was a very active member of the Colchester club.  Marilyn will publish his mailing address.

Marilyn  Bedell — Bob Gasser went for an eye exam.  Though he’s blind in his left eye, he was driving home and suddenly couldn’t see out of his right eye.  Here is what Bob wrote to me:
Hello Friends  As I believe most of you know that my L eye is blind and my R eye is 20/20 and good.  I frequently am tested to insure R is healthy.  Last  Thursday I saw my glaucoma  MD in New London to test the pressure which was good.  In order to do this he and his nurse apply drops, They recommend someone drive you and take you home but at least bring sun glasses.  I have over the last few years successfully worn sun glasses.  Upon leaving the  office I put my sun glasses on and drove to I-89.  Upon exiting at my exit (Grantham), my eye began to cloud up .  I was only 3 miles from my house and proceeded on Rt. 10 .  The eye worsened and I kept traveling hoping to find a place to turn off but no success.  I actually left Route 10 and continued on a paved road section for bicycles and dog walkers.   All of a sudden  now completely blind, I hit a bunch of rocks and the car flew in the air and then landed.  I pumped the brakes which did not stop as I rolled on. I stripped the gears and only was I able to stop on an incline.  It was a deserted patch of road but I could hear the traffic on 89.  I tried to call 911 but my cell was dead.  After plugging it in the local PD took me home but the car was not operational and was eventually towed to a body shop.( $8,600)  The body shop guy told me he was sooo busy it could not be available until 2-3 months.  My policy provides 30 day rental which I intend to exercise tomorrow, 2 days later my eye returned to somewhat normal but I was able to see my eye specialist  who after numerous test said the eye was good and the reason for this crisis was my eye was so dry that it did not dispose of the drops which continued for 2 days. All seems well now.

Whew!  So happy Bob didn't get hurt.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL NEWS

WHO’s African region one year wild polio-free
On 25 August, Rotary joined our partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in marking the first anniversary of the World Health Organization’s African region being certified free of wild polio. The infrastructure and innovations developed continue to benefit children’s and public health across the continent and play an important role in fighting COVID-19. Read how the GPEI’s new strategy aims to overcome the remaining hurdles to finish the job.

The power of an inclusive environment
Rotary’s DEI task force was created to come up with a concrete plan that makes sure that diversity, equity, and inclusion are ingrained into everything we do as an organization and reflected in our actions. Valarie Wafer, chair of the task force, explains why it’s not good enough just to say the right things. Creating a culture where people feel safe to make mistakes and take chances on big ideas leads to greater innovation and ultimately growth. Read more.
