Calling all beer lovers. The purpose of our efforts is to raise funds to benefit local youth and non-profit programs as well as provide an afternoon of beer tasting (over 35 brewers), music, food, friendship and games. Meet friends and neighbors on the beautiful Lebanon Green (Colburn Park, 51 North Main Street) in the center of the City. We hope you enjoy the tastes and sounds of the afternoon and come back again.

Nursing Global Health Connection Trips
Arianna Anton
Arianna stated her objective today was to:
Provide us some background information about international service opportunities for nursing students at Colby-Sawyer College,
Describe trips that have happened over the past few years, and
Talk about an upcoming trip in 2024.
The rigors of a nursing program limit students ability to do an international experience unless the decide to do it on college breaks. Ariana has been organizing international trips for nursing students since 2016. The trips were stopped during Covid, but started again with a trip to Morocco.
The trips are considered service trips. The students are engaged in healthcare experiences that are requested by the community they are visiting. They are not there long enough to make major changes in care delivery, but they work to augment what is already in place. The goal isn't to fix, but to observe, think and learn by doing. She hopes to provide cultural immersion experiences and she works to place students with local families rather than being in "hotel-type" setting.
Her first trip with students was in 2016. They went to Mexico. The students provided service in free clinics; they did door-to-door assessments in the community; provided health education; and had some time for sightseeing and fun.
In 2018, Arianna led her first trip as the leader of the team or 25 students. They traveled to Costa Rica. They were stationed at a daycare center. There they did wellness checks and had an opportunity to engage in play with the children. They partnered with a local physician to learn about what they could do to help the community. In addition to working with the community, they had time to explore the region and see local sites such as churches, a volcano and hot springs. They learned about the indigenous people, their traditions, their activities (spear throwing, music, steam treatments, dress and significance of hair coloring) and their health practices.
Again home stays were an important part of this trip. She described how almost everyone in the group was willing to try new foods such as guinea pig.
Morocco was the trip that happen this past school year. It included 16 students, with Arianna.
The went to Rabat and Marrakesh. In both places they stayed with local families. They met with local college students to work on language skills (Modern Standard Arabic and Standard Moroccan Berber and English). She encouraged the students to spend time observing the culture from any perspective that they wanted. Some focused on family structure, others on sports, other on food, etc.
They learned how to make traditional mint tea. The rode camels. They tried other traditional food, and had opportunities to dance in traditional dress. They were able to bring back persian souvenirs gifts
Arianna's presentation about both Costa Rica and Morocco were augmented by a video that showed the students at "work" and at "play". The videos showed us the type of healthcare supplies and equipment they took with them to help the community.
President Ernst Oidtmann called the meeting to order a few minutes after noon. As this week, it took 4 Rotarians and our guest to get WebEx connected...sigh...If anyone tried to sign on but wasn't unsuccessful... apologies.
Ernst Oidtmann played and we tried to sing both our Rotary Welcome Song, and the 1st and 6th verse of The Streets of Laredo.
Ernst welcomed WRJ Past President George Wentz to our meeting. He served as president 26 years ago when Ernst was last president.
We then had our eclectic mix of food for lunch.

And despite having to say goodbye, Abuela has one more surprise for Dulce—something to help her remember that home isn’t just a place, but the deep-rooted love they share no matter the distance.
Ron Bedell presented Bill Secord with his Paul Harris +5 pin. He thanked him for his ongoing support of the Rotary Foundation.

Jim Damren let us know that sponsorships have increased over the past week. Sponsorships for inclusion in our Brew Fest Booklet are now closed. We are about $1,000 behind last years total or $12,000.

Ahmad Hadari has accepted a new job with AWS.
Hank Clarke is happy to be back at a meeting. He has taken two vacation trips this summer, the most recent to Maine, and has already made reservations for next year to go back. On the sad side, Carol is dealing with sciatic nerve pain, and this had led to many medical appointments.
Tim Guaraldi let us know that getting the safe out of the Mascoma River was quite the feat. It probably weighed over 6,500 pounds. The backhoe could not lift it, it had to be dragged out of the water. Next he let us know that the Lebanon Poker Room is hoping a member of the club will go to a check presentation ceremony on August 22, 2024 from 4-6 PM to have a photo taken.
Bruce Bergeron's granddaughter was born in between weekends of car racing...making her his favorite granddaughter.
Our guest, George Wentz, let us know he was happy to be with us today, and hope to come back to visit again soon.

Polio Update
Despite a rise in polio cases this year, our work to eradicate polio is even more important.

Polio Management Team Reviews Eradication Efforts and Emergency Action Plan
Islamabad, August 10, 2024 – The National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) for Polio Eradication convened a pivotal meeting of the National Polio Management Team to assess ongoing polio eradication efforts and deliberate on the National Emergency Action Plan (NEAP) for Polio Eradication 2024-2025.
The high-level session, chaired by Ayesha Raza Farooq, the Prime Minister’s Focal Person on Polio Eradication, brought together key stakeholders including National and Provincial Coordinators, the Core Team, Dr. Zafar Iqbal Channa, Director Technical of FDI, Trustee Rotary Foundation and Pakistan National Polio Plus Committee Chairman Aziz Memon, and representatives from various donor agencies.
The agenda includes a national overview of current priorities, program vision, and the strategic plan for Supplemental Immunization Activities (SIAs) for the rest of 2024. The discussions will integrate recommendations from the National Task Force (NTF), Technical Advisory Group (TAG), and Independent Monitoring Board (IMB).
In her address, Ayesha Raza Farooq, Prime Minister’s Focal Person on Polio Eradication, remarked," This National Polio Management Team meeting is a pivotal moment for us to critically assess our strategies and refine our approach. By learning from our experiences and aligning our efforts, we can achieve our goal of eliminating polio by mid-June 2025."
"At this crucial juncture, the unwavering commitment of the government, from the Honorable Prime Minister to provincial Chief Ministers, and key agencies, is at an all-time high. As we moved towards the forthcoming stock-take meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, it is indeed up to us now, how best we can benefit from the current momentum. Together, as ‘One Team,’ I am confident we will meet our commitments to both our nation and the global community," she added further.
Captain (R) Anwar Ul Haq, National EOC Coordinator, emphasized the importance of united efforts: "This National Polio Management Team meeting underscores our shared commitment and strategic approach to eradicating polio. The collaborative efforts of the National and Provincial teams are pivotal to achieving our final goal."
Additionally, the Director Technical of Federal Directorate of Immunization (FDI), Dr. Zafar Iqbal Channa, provided an update on the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), emphasizing the synergy achieved in 2023-24 and presenting the plan for 2024-25.
At the concluding session, the stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to intensify immunization efforts and ensure that no child is left unvaccinated, reinforcing their collective resolve to make Pakistan a polio-free nation.
