Program - February 28, 2019

Our speakers today were:

EricEllingson

Eric has over 20 years of experience as a Physical Therapist and is the co-owner of BE Fit Physical Therapy.  Eric obtained his Bachelor’s in Molecular Biology from Swarthmore College, and later completed his Masters in Physical Therapy at the Massachusetts General Hospital’s Institute of Health Professions. Eric gained extensive orthopedic experience in the Boston area, with a focus on returning the recreational athlete to their favorite activities and maximizing the post-operative recovery process. Eric is an avid biker and also enjoys backpacking, basketball, and snowboarding. Most of all, he enjoys making his wife and two young children smile at their home in Plainfield.

Kevin Stanton

Kevin has 8 years of experience as a Physical Therapist. He graduated summa cum laude from University of Vermont with a B.S. in nutrition and food science. He continued on to obtain his Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2011. Kevin joined BE Fit in 2018 after working in the lakes region of New Hampshire.  In his free time, Kevin is an endurance sport enthusiast, having completed over a dozen marathon as well as ironman triathlons.  As new residents of the Upper Valley, Kevin and his wife Rachel, are excited to welcome a baby girl in June.

Both spoke about the benefits of exercise. It is recommended that we get 150 minutes of moderate activity (activity that raises our heart rate) each week.  Two days a week, we should focus on muscle strengthening.  We each need to find out what will work for us and what activities bring us joy.

They encouraged us to review the Move Your Way Web page (Click Here). From the web page:

"Walk. Run. Dance. Play. What's your move?

Everyone needs physical activity to stay healthy. But it can be hard to find the time in your busy routine.

The Move Your Way tools, videos, and fact sheets on this page have tips that make it easier to get a little more active. And small changes can add up to big health benefits!

No matter who you are, you can find safe, fun ways to get active — to move your way"

They reminded us that often it can be easy incorporating exercise into our day.  You can"
  • Sit to stand 10 times each day.
  • Do toe raises while brushing your teeth
  • Do counter push ups.
  • Work on balance by standing on one leg for 20 seconds (at first be near a surface you can use to steady yourself.)
  • Use resistance bands for rowing movements.
Many insurance companies will let you self refer to Physical Therapy, thought medicare requires a referral from your physician. BE Fit can help you with targeted exercises for a specific body part(s); provide hands on treatments; educate you about a treatment plan you can work on at home; and they have various treatment modalities/machines/techniques to augment other forms of therapy.

Brags/Happy Dollars

Hank Clarke let us know that Carol's birthday is tomorrow.  He had a sad dollar too, as his car's engine "blew-up".  He is now waiting for it to be replaced.

Karen Clement is happy to be back at a meeting after many weeks of being away due to surgery and work commitments.  We learned her granddaughter is now 7 months old.  Her husband Peter is preparing to move to Maine for a new job and they will be commuting back and forth to Maine.

Lisa Mooney announced that she and Marion Steiner will be off to Northeast President-elect Training in Framingham starting next Thursday.  As a reminder they will be our co-presidents in 2019/20.

John Yacavone brought a copy of the Lebanon Times which had a huge article on Ernst Oidtmann upcoming retirement; and a meet you neighbor segment on Bill Secord.  Both Bill and Ernst paid "fines" for the honor of being highlighted in the articles. There was also an article on our former member Linda Copp.  It was about her dance studio on the Mall in Lebanon.

Marilyn Bedell will be heading to Framingham to help with Assistant Governor training.  She let us know that Rotary International President, Mark Maloney will be a featured speaker.  After Northeast President-elect Training, Marilyn and Ron will be off on a month long vacation that includes a cruise to the Eastern Caribbean.  Here's to warmer weather.

Female surveillance officer for WHO pushes through gender-related obstacles to help end polio in Pakistan

By

Dr. Nayyar
Dr. Ujala Nayyar, surveillance officer for WHO, talks about polio eradication efforts in Pakistan.

In addition to the challenges of polio surveillance, Nayyar faces substantial gender-related barriers that, at times, hinder her team's ability to count cases and take environmental samples. From households to security checkpoints, she encounters resistance from men. But her tactic is to push past the barriers with a balance of sensitivity and assertiveness.

"I'm not very polite," Nayyar said with a chuckle during an interview at Rotary's World Polio Day last year in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. "We don't have time to be stopped. Ending polio is urgent and time-sensitive."

Women are critical in the fight against polio, Nayyar says. About 56 percent of frontline workers in Pakistan are women. More than 70 percent of mothers in Pakistan prefer to have women vaccinate their children.

That hasn't stopped families from slamming doors in health workers' faces, though. When polio is detected in a community, teams have to make repeated visits to each home to ensure that every child is protected by the vaccine. Multiple vaccinations add to the skepticism and anger that some parents express. It's an attitude that Nayyar and other health workers deal with daily.

"You can't react negatively in those situations. It's important to listen. Our female workers are the best at that," says Nayyar.

With polio on the verge of eradication, surveillance activities, which, Nayyar calls the "back of polio eradication", have never been more important.
