Moorings

Talk of Covid-19 and the variants continue to be part of our pre-meeting conversations.  Joy Gobin shared that she had Covid-19 and continues to have a lingering headache that has lasted 20+ days.  Students and staff at Lebanon High School continue to be out in large numbers with Covid-19. Jimmy Brock indicated that cases in Bermuda continue to rise too.

On the lighter side John Yacavone was asked if he was drinking bourbon when in reality it was glass of cranberry juice. Jimmy Brock said that household chores were keeping him off the golf course today.  He was looking spiffy in his British Open polo shirt. Hank Clarke has planned a river cruise in Europe that will include several days in Paris. He won't be at our meeting next  week as he and Carol will once  again try to go to the Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience in Boston.

Meeting review:

Our meeting was called to order by Hank Clarke at 12:02 PM.  Marilyn Bedell rang the bell with gusto this week.

JoAnn Lemieux was called on to recite the 4-Way Test, which she did with no difficulty.  Though she did confess that she has 4-Way Test plaque on her desk, so it was easy to read/remember.

President Hank then lead us through Club Business:
  • Road Signs
As John Yacavone has mentioned at previous meeting, we are ready to replace our Rotary road signs this spring.  We will be installing 8 new signs.  There is currently  $1,000 in the 2021/2022 club operating budget to do this.  The cost of the signs will be $1,138.40.  Bill Secord made a motion to approve the expenditure of an additional $138.40 to cover the cost of the signs. John Yacovone seconded the motion.  The motions was passed in the affirmative by the members present at our meeting today.  Marilyn Bedell will now work with Russell Hampton to have the signs produced and shipped to John Yacavone's home. We will have a work day at John's home in the spring to attach the signs to the poles.
  • Poker Room
John Yacavone let us know that the "paperwork" for hosting Lebanon Poker Room has gone to the state. We will host the room for 10 days, April 14 to April 18 and April 19 to April 22.  The rules have changed so we will not need to have someone available to go to the room to sign us in.  We will receive 35% of the take each evening. The check should arrive to our club within 7 days of April 22.
  • Charities Update
Charities voted yesterday to approve an allocation of $7,700 to fund replacement of 7 of Riverside Park's 14 picnic tables.

Because this expenditure is not in Charities 2021-22 budget and because it exceeds $1,000, the Club must vote on the appropriation.

Bruce Pacht informed the Club of Charities' action and announced that a Club member vote be taken at the February 3 meeting to approve this expenditure. There is no requirement in Charities' bylaws for a specific amount of warning time before Club votes on Charities' proposals.  Please reach out to Bruce if you have questions about this proposal.

He shared that we are awaiting a bid to see how much it will cost to paint the pavilion and to improve handicapped access.  It is hoped that we will have the funds to replace the remaining picnic tables in 2022/2023 Rotary year.
  • Next weeks program on Human Trafficking
Jane Mason let us know that our speakers will begin their program at 12:10 PM and they have content that will fill 50 minutes. At the end of the program, the speakers will be available to answer questions.
  • Rotary Meeting Zoom Link
Marilyn Bedell announced that she has created a standing Zoom link for our meetings now that we are meeting at noon every Thursday.  Consider saving this weeks agenda in a file so you will have the link if you lose the link prior to the start of other meetings.  She will continue to put the link in the newsletter each week.
  • Sharing meeting links for Zoom via Outlook and Google Calendar
Ed Friedman requested that our meeting links be sent out with links to Outlook and Google Calendars.  Marilyn Bedell with explore how this can be done.  If anyone can advise Marilyn, please let her know that you can educate her about this.

Rotary International News

Rotary International's Annual Report

This year, Rotary confronted the turbulence all around us — a global pandemic, natural disasters, food insecurity — and used it as an opportunity to take care of one another, to personally adapt to and embrace these changing times, and to bring about lasting change for the people we serve. The challenges we all face are ongoing and the need to adapt will continue. But we can be proud of the fact that Rotary has not shrunk from this moment. We have embraced our role as people of action in difficult times.

As you will read in the pages ahead Click Here, we’ve achieved remarkable successes in the past year. From celebrating the declaration of the WHO’s African region as wild polio-free and introducing Partners for a Malaria-Free Zambia as the first Programs of Scale grant recipient to adding the environment as a new area of focus and re-envisioning the Rotary Peace Centers certificate program while also welcoming students to the first Rotary Peace Center in Africa — Rotary acted boldly. We set a fundraising record for The Rotary Foundation, raising more than $440.9 million in 2020-21. But even more important than the headlines we earned is that we reached out to each other and showed the kind of care that defines us as a network of global friendship.

In the coming years, we have the opportunity to increase our impact, expand our reach, enhance participant engagement, and increase our ability to adapt — as long as we continue to build on our Action Plan progress. The world today needs help bringing this pandemic to a close, reconnecting with each other in meaningful ways, and rebuilding the kind of trust necessary to restore global stability and establish a foundation of peace. This is our time. Together, let us make the most of it.
