Hybrid Meetings Now Happening!!!

Meeting Minutes from the February 9, 2022 Meeting
  • Ed Friedman rang the bell and  called our meeting to order
  • This was Our Second Hybrid meeting.  We still have some "bugs" to work out.  Our technical liaison at APD will join us at our next meeting to hopefully make the system work better for us.
  • Ed Friedman lead the reciting of the 4-Way Test.
  • Ernst Oidtmann lead us in singing our welcoming song and one other classic song (not our finest singing wink).
  • Those attending the meeting in person dined on hot dogs (beef and turkey), Caesar salad, turkey tetrazzini, baked tomatoes, coleslaw, pasta salad, potato salad, veggie lasagne, and a variety of desserts.
  • Hank Clarke then went on the hunt for happy dollars:
    • Hank Clarke shared that he spent some time with Suellen Griffin.  He shared that the North Country Chordsmen did a great job singing the National Anthem at the Dartmouth Hockey Game over the weekend.
    • Bruce Pacht reminded us that it Singing Valentine season.
    • Ron Bedell was at the last Northeast President's Elect Training Seminar (NEPETS) planning meeting on Saturday.
    • Cal Wolfe shared good news from Kenya.  A new field is being tended to by William (a college graduate who could not find work in his field of study).  He is doing a great job and Cal sees it as a success.
    • Ed Friedman let us know that his granddaughter Lainey has gained more weight...now 3 pounds 8 ounces.
    • Marilyn Bedell is spending the day remembering Sue Donnelly who was born on February 9th.  She still misses her a lot.
  • DEI Video: After dealing with video projection issues, Phil Bush figured out how he could share a video with us from his home.  This video was part of our efforts to think more about Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.  Click here if you want to watch the video. Buddha's Two Mothers The video was by Robert 1932 and Barbara Black Professor of Religion and Chair, Department of Religion Reiko Ohnuma as she talks about the ancient faith traditions of Buddhism and how gender issues and narrative literature have affected the philosophy as we know it today. Following the video, there was some spirited discussion about the premise of her message. Ron Michaud shared that he is a practicing Buddhist.  He indicated that there a beautiful Buddhist Center near the Barnet Exit on I-91. He encouraged us to visit the center. From the web page for the center:

Tibetan Buddhist Retreat Center in Barnet, VT. Milarepa Center is a Tibetan Buddhist retreat center dedicated to inspiring the highest potential in all beings through the cultivation of wisdom, compassion and the good heart. Situated on 276 acres of serene Vermont beauty, we offer private retreat space, teachings, and special events in a contemplative environment for practitioners of all levels.

  • Youth Service Report — Joy Gobin
Joy gave us a comprehensive overview of the work being done by the Youth Services Committee.  This is a portion of her report:

  1. The committee is in need of new members. Phil Rentz, is now chair of  Brew Fest and has asked to be replaced on the committee. Rudy Fedrizzi had been a member, but he is now on a LOA.  Reach out to Joy if you would like to be involved in the work outlined below.
  2. Joy thanked Phil for all the work he has done to organize the speech contest.  She shared that two of our students are entering another speech contest and being a part of ours has helped them get more comfortable talking in front of others.  Round Two of the speech contest will be held on Saturday, March 4th in the Dwinell Room.  This replaces our meeting on March 2nd.  Please put this date on your calendar and come and support our student who will be a part of Round two.
  3. Interact Clubs:
Lebanon High School (LHS):  Local Project
International Project: LHS has donated $250 to  http://kiva.org
Club members met with Matt Pickell 1/9/23 from the Haven, had a tour and we are doing a service project with the Haven. This is Interact’s  second local project and will be combined with a FBLA Community Service Project. The students are learning a lot about homelessness in the Upper Valley (e.g., the challenges of food when you don't have cooking facilities). With the members of FBLA they plan to make a PSA for the Haven.

Mascoma Valley Regional High School (MVRHS): Bruce/Curtis/ Lindsay Coolidge advisor  Mascoma Interact had a great cookie baking afternoon before the holiday break which benefited a few different senior centers and assisted living facilities, as well as our staff here at Mascoma. Currently, we are planning our needs for our upcoming basketball concessions to fundraise for future service projects and we are planning on volunteering here at the high school on 1/21 for the Lakes Region Music Festival that Mascoma Music Department is the host of this year.”  They would like to do another Feeding America event, but not sure they will have the funds to do this.
  4. RYLA: We will send student to the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) Conference at Northern Vermont University.
Ahmad and Joy: Applications, interviews, and selection at LHS.
    Bruce to speak with MRHS
On February 10, 2023 from 9-9:30 there will be a promotion to 10th graders(by last year's RYLA participants)
    March 17th students submit applications
April 7th interview students and select RYLA
June 23-25 students attend at RYLA
  5. District 7850's Interact Symposium April 28-30, 2023, at Jay Peak — We have retained funds to pay for 4 students to attend RYLA and 4 students to attend the District Interact Symposium in 2023.
  6. Scholarships: Reviewed criteria in January 2023. YSC has voted to have all scholarships be named:  The Lebanon Rotary Scholarship. The Lebanon Rotary Scholarship in Memory of Thomas Dauphinais was funded by the Lebanon Riverside Club which is no longer a club and that we currently support 3 area high schools with 6 scholarships, the committee believes having a uniformed identity is important moving forward to 2023 and beyond. All scholarships will be called Lebanon Rotary Scholarship. Joy contacted Tom's Sister in who is living in the United Kingdom.  She understands why the change is being made and was supportive.

Our paths crossed with JoAnn's for only brief time, as we shared fellowship in Rotary. JoAnn’s earthly journey has ended, and a new journey has begun.
May this candle remind us of the sacredness of life and what she meant to all who were touched by her life”

News from Last Week
Here are a few things I forgot to publish last week:

Kilton Library Donations

The following books went to the Kilton Library's Children's Collection on behalf of our  speech contestants:

Elizabeth Rose Canaveral:
Our Planet! There's No Place like Earth, by Stacy McAnulty, illus. by David Litchfield.

From writer Stacy McAnulty and illustrator David Litchfield, Our Planet! There's No Place Like Earth is a nonfiction picture book about the Earth, told from the perspective of Earth herself.Meet Earth.
Planet Awesome! And your awesome home! Actually, Earth is home to all the plants and all the animals in the solar system, including nearly eight billion people. Humans have accidentally moved Earth's climate change into the fast lane, and she need your help to put on the brakes. Earthlings need Earth, and Earth needs Earthlings, so let’s save Earth together!
With characteristic humor and charm, Stacy McAnulty channels the voice of Earth in this next celestial "autobiography" in the Our Universe series. Rich with kid-friendly facts and beautifully brought to life by David Litchfield, this is an equally charming and irresistible picture book.

Adriana Caraeni:
Clever Little Witch, by Muon Thi Van, illus. by Hyewon Yum.

Magical mayhem and hilarity ensue when a clever little witch tries to turn her baby brother into a goldfish in this funny and imaginative picture book about sibling rivalry.
Little Linh is the cleverest little witch on Mãi Mãi island. She has everything she could need: a trusty broomstick, a powerful spell book, and a magical pet mouse. She also has a new brother named Baby Phu, and she does not like him one bit. He crashes her broomstick, eats pages out of her spell book, and keeps her up all night. Little Linh tried giving Baby Phu away, but nobody will take him, not even the Orphanage for Lost and Magical Creatures.
So, she’ll just have to try something else…like turning him into a goldfish. The only problem is, Baby Phu ate the second half of the spell. Still, there’s a reason Little Linh is the cleverest little witch. She can guess the second half of the spell…but it might take a few tries.

Riley Naylor:
Sweet Dreaming, by Julia Rawlinson, illus by Nicole Wong.

A picture book from acclaimed author Julia Rawlinson about a mother who helps her child fall asleep by encouraging her to use her imagination.
"I can't sleep!" said Molly.
"You can," said her Mom.
"Just think of a story and sleep will soon come…"
When Molly can't fall asleep, her Mom has the perfect remedy: a soothing bedtime story! Mom dreams up a variety of sleep-inducing scenarios, but Molly manages to find something exciting and energizing in each one. Eventually, Mom's stories work, just not in the way she expects…

Senior Center Meal
Ernst Oidtmann helped out making a meal at the Senior Center.  He indicated he had a good time making meatballs.

Ernst wrote, "Here is a picture of representing the club at the Sr Cr on Campbell street this am.
They don't seem to mind me too much.
This is the 2nd time  I was there, but now in uniform...
The food is some kind of meatballs; nothing Dutch about it."

Ron Bedell presented two Paul Harris Fellowship pins last week...Thanking Dean Cashman and Will Koppenheffer for their donations!

Rotary Moment for the Week of February 12, 2023

Our Picnic Table District Grant

HOW DO DISTRICT GRANTS HELP AT HOME?

A Rotary club in the United States used a $3,000 district grant to purchase food and personal care items for a local food pantry that saw a 50% increase in need. A Rotary club in India is using a district grant to provide hygiene kits and training to girls who might otherwise miss school. The project aims to help 40,000 girls.

Clubs worldwide use district grants to support similar short-term projects in their communities.

Every club has the opportunity to create positive change in their community with grants from The Rotary Foundation, one project at a time.

What do you want to accomplish in our community?

Rotary responds to earthquake that has devastated areas of
Turkey and Syria

Turkey and Syria were struck by a devastating earthquake on 6 February that has killed tens of thousands of people, destroyed thousands of homes and other structures, and left people across the region without shelter in bitterly cold winter weather.

The Rotary world responded to this catastrophe immediately. RI President Jennifer Jones activated our disaster response efforts, communicated with the affected districts, and encouraged governors in those regions to apply for disaster response grants and share information about their relief efforts so that Rotary can amplify the calls for support.

Rotary's project partner ShelterBox has an emergency response team assessing the needs in the region and how it can respond. That team is communicating with Rotary district leaders. Our service partner Habitat for Humanity International is also working on its response. Many Rotary members are asking how they can help. Here's how to have the greatest impact:

  • Give to The Rotary Foundation's Disaster Response Fund. Donations help clubs and districts provide aid and support rebuilding efforts where the need is greatest. The funds are distributed to affected communities through disaster response grants. The Disaster Response Fund can accept cash contributions and District Designated Funds (DDF). Donations to the Disaster Response Fund are combined and cannot be designated for a specific disaster.
  • Support local initiatives. As we learn about local response efforts that are being led by clubs and districts, Rotary raises awareness about how to support them. People can then support these projects by working directly with Rotary members in the region. If you want us to publicize information about local response efforts, write to relief@rotary.org.
