Today's Program

Our speaker today was Elizabeth Stookey Sunde.  She shared information about Music to Life and their partnership for a pilot program with the Upper Valley Music Center.

Elizabeth Stookey Sunde

Sunde was joined by Emily Musty, Program Development and Artist Development at Music to Life, and Benjamin "Ben" Van Vliet, Executive Director and Erin Smity, from the Upper Valley Music Center.

Elizabeth Stookey Sunde is the co-founder and Executive Director of Music to Life. Founded in 2000 with Noel “Paul” Stookey—of the 1960's folk trio Peter, Paul & Mary—Music to Life builds on the strong historical legacy of social movements' intentional use of music to educate, recruit, and mobilize.  Sunde shared that she considers this to be her father's legacy project, but he would be too humble to call it this himself.

She believes their mission is to be stewards of the power of music to change lives. Music to Life goal is to take music into our community to help make change, especially in those individual who are considered marginalized.  Around the country, they have programs working to help prevent suicides; assisting in the criminal justice system to help rehabilitate those who are incarcerated; and working with individuals in recovery from alcohol and addictive medications.

Sunde lives in the Upper Valley and has been very concerned about marginalized  youth in the Upper Valley.  This led her to talk to Van Vliet about doing a pilot project with The Upper Valley Music Center.

Musty then described her vision for the pilot program.  From her we learned that 52% of middle school and high school student in the Upper Valley participate in one or more risky behaviors. Musty worked for Second Wind, and is educated as a substance abuse counselor.

Emily Musty

She believes that musicians can be mentors to children at risk by helping kids to see how music can change their lives, either through creating music, performing music or working behind the scenes to support performing artist.  It is hoped that the program will help decrease social isolation in vulnerable youth in our community.

The goal is to reach kids not already connected to the 'music scene'.  The are holding four listening session to hear from kids what is important to them.

Van Vliet then thanked us for our previous support of Upper Valley Music Center.  He hopes we will consider supporting this new pilot.  His hope is that the Upper Valley Music Center will be seen by schools in the same way that the Montshire Science Museum is seen as a resource for STEM programs. The want to be an organizational resource. The goal is to increase music education and group based musical education in the Upper Valley.

Tim Gauraldi's daughter is in Kenya climbing Kilimanjaro.  He shared that she will spend some time in Tanzania too.  He's a little worried about the political unrest in this part of the world, but Marilyn Bedell reminded him that we could connect her to Rotarians to look after her in both countries if it is needed.

Bill Secord once again reminded us that we need to support our local newspapers in print or digitally.

Hank and Carol Clarke are getting ready to sell tickets at the Dartmouth Relays this weekend.  He also mentioned something about 'why do I live here?" on this very cold morning.

John Yacavone and Bill Secord shared information about our tradition of giving books to the Kilton Library in honor of our speakers.

Rudy Fedrizzi is happy to be formally joining our club this morning.  He shared that his 24 year old son is home from his European adventure.

Bruce Bergeron has been binge watching Dr. Pimple Popper.  Sounds like it isn't a program for the faint of heart.

Toastmasters and Rotary partner to help members grow professionally and make a difference in their communities

ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Jan. 7, 2020 — Members of Toastmasters and Rotary will enhance their skills, broaden their networks and increase their positive impact in communities through a new collaboration.

The ongoing relationship between the two organizations will begin at the grassroots level with local club members learning and working together. Additionally, Toastmasters will create a set of eight structured communication and leadership development courses for Rotary with a phased rollout that will be available in English in 2020, and in more languages in 2021.

“The strategic alliance with Rotary is exciting and allows both organizations to leverage our unique and similar strengths,” says Deepak Menon, Toastmasters' 2019-20 International President. “We look forward to providing our current and prospective members with ongoing additional offerings that meet their evolving needs.”

With its first unofficial meeting held in Bloomington, Ill., in March 1905, Toastmasters is a global nonprofit organization with more than 16,800 clubs in 143 countries. Its members attend club meetings where they learn how to be more confident speakers, communicators and leaders. Toastmasters’ vision for the ongoing collaboration with Rotary is to change more lives for the better, and positively impact communities around the world.

“Collaborating with Toastmasters will provide our members with even more opportunities to develop and improve their leadership and communication skills,” said John Hewko, general secretary and CEO of Rotary International. “In turn, members of Toastmasters can connect with more people, take advantage of new speaking and learning opportunities, and make a difference in their communities through Rotary.”

Rotary provides its members opportunities to develop professionally, gain world understanding, and make lifelong friendships – all while volunteering to improve lives and bring lasting, positive change to communities.

Founded in 1905 in Chicago, Ill., Rotary is a global network of people committed to improving lives and bringing positive, lasting change. Each year, Rotary members contribute millions of dollars and volunteer hours to promote health, peace and prosperity in communities across the globe. Through volunteering, they make lifelong friendships that transcend political, cultural and generational boundaries and foster global understanding and respect.
