Rotary Club of Lebanon
Meeting – February 6, 2025

Meeting Overview:

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!
  • President Ernst Oidtmann called the meeting to order at noon while Marilyn worked to get WebEx started.
  • Dave Clarenbach led us in the 4-Way Test
  • Birthdays — No one fessed up to having a birthday this week.
  • Rotary Anniversary — Ernst Oidtmann joined Rotary on February 1, 1983 (He didn't tell us this news at the meeting)  Happy Rotary Anniversary Ernst.
  • No guests today but 13 brave Rotarians ventured out in the snow to the meeting at Harvest Hill and three joined online.
  • Ernst then led us in singing our welcome song and There is a Tavern in the Town.
  • Thought of the Day:
    • Nothing is more frivolous than talking about frivolous things than to talk of frivolous things seriously; but nothing is better than to make faviolities serve serious ends.
    • Alway remember every Thursday is a dutch treat!
  • Then it was time  to go to the buffet to get our lunch.
  • Due to the snow storm. Our speakers cancelled and will be rescheduled.
  • No one volunteered to do a spur of the moment classification talk.
  • Ernst then call for committee reports. Bruce Bergeron provide the following updates:
    • On Tuesday, Bruce and Ernst put the storage locker together in a closet at the Grafton County Senior Center. Dean who is on the Senior Center Board thanked them for this assistance, and shared how short staff the Senior Center is.  Any help we can provide is helpful.  Ernst continues to help with meal preparations on Mondays.
    • Bruce brought the stainless steel replacement drum element for Harmony Park.  At the end of the meeting, Bruce Bergeron, Dave Clarenbach and Tim Guaraldi ware heading to the park to install it.

  • Polystyrene (StyrofoamTM) Collection will be Saturday, April 12th.  Bruce Bergeron let us know he has enough drivers, but we still need onsite volunteer to help direct cars to the collection site.  (Rain, Shine or Snow...it will go on)
  • In May in conjunction with Parks and Recration, we will hold a clean-up Lebanon event. Ernst has suggested  May 17th for the date.
  • Marilyn Bedell shared that the District Assembly will be on April 12th in Lyndonville.  If you don't feel up to helping with Styrofoam Collection, consider joining her for the trip to Lyndonville for this Rotary District gathering.
  • Steve Whitman reminded about the City of Lebanon's Strategic Planning session for the public this evening.  This then led to robust discussion about the financial landscape in our City and the types of decision our City will be required to make. We then talked about what sort of role Rotary could have in helping to find solutions via encouraging more involvment in community service to our City. Ernst share that there is an article in the Atlantic Monthly that is a good read.  I believe this is the article; The Anti-Social Century — Americans are now spending more time alone than ever. It’s changing our personalities, our politics, and even our relationship to reality. By Derek Thompson, Illustrations by Max Guther
If you have ideas on how we can make a difference to enhance our City, share them.  We were all reminded that Charities is always looking for ideas of how we can support our community with funding. Ideas should be coming from our members.
  • In June we will honor someone with and honorary Paul Harris Fellowship.  If you have a club member or community member to suggest for this award, share the name and reason for the nomination with Bruce Bergeron and Tim Guaraldi.

Rotary News

Rotary’s response to the U.S.’s plan to withdraw from the WHO, USAID funding freeze

By

Rotary notes the recent announcement that the United States intends to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO), a partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI). We remain resolute in our mission to eradicate polio. As a founding partner of the GPEI, Rotary has for decades worked closely with all the GPEI partners, the U.S. government, and other governments to end polio worldwide. This effort has reduced the number of children paralyzed by polio by 99.9% since 1988. The global effort to eradicate polio has innovated many times over the years to come close to protecting every last child.

Although this decision creates new challenges, Rotary remains dedicated to ensuring that every child is protected from this preventable disease. We are confident that the GPEI will continue to adapt, to innovate, and to implement effective strategies to keep polio vaccines available for every child in the United States and around the world, especially those in the most challenging and remote regions. The most important decisions leading to a polio-free world are made every day by parents who present their children for vaccination.

We remain committed to working with all GPEI partners to fulfill the promise of a polio-free world. Together, we have ended smallpox, and together, we can ensure that polio becomes the second human disease to be eradicated from the planet.

Rotary, USAID projects

Rotary has collaborated with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) since 2009 on different types of programs. Our current programmatic efforts and communications with USAID personnel and leadership are on hold due to the stop-work order issued by USAID. Rotary International has already notified members whose projects are directly impacted by this order and is working to continue to support them in their impactful work.

We are navigating the implications of the recent stop-work order issued for Hearts of Europe projects that are part of a partnership with USAID. All projects that are currently in an implementation phase have been notified and given information about what actions need to be taken while the stop-work order is in effect. We are working directly with those projects that are not yet being implemented to determine alternative funding for their important work.
