Ryan experienced the programs of Rotary Foundation as both a Youth Exchange participant and as an Ambassadorial Scholarship student when studying for his master’s degree. The Rotary Foundation helps Rotary members to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace by improving health, providing quality education, improving the environment, and alleviating poverty.
We will have our four RYLA participants from this past spring joining us to receive their Leadership certificates and to give us a brief update on their experiences. We also hope to have our INTERACT members from Lebanon and Mascoma join us for lunch and to hear Ryan’ inspirational tale of the opportunities Rotary made possible for him to undertake.
Ryan first joined Cardigan in 2002. Ryan left Cardigan for two years to earn his MBA at Grenoble Graduate School of Business in Grenoble, France in 2008.
In his Personal Leadership class, he acts as a facilitator to promote self-discovery and develop problem-solving skills amongst his students.
In college he was a member of the Dartmouth Men's Ice Hockey Team and is passionate about teaching his players to think the game at the next level. As a British/Canadian/American citizen, Ryan has traveled to over 70 countries worldwide and has started his own student leadership and travel programs, called Ivy Leader, which he runs in the summers.

Rudy Fedrizzi, accompanied by his colleague, Epidemiologist Lyrica Stelle, operating the laptop, gave a classification talk that focused on the importance of Public Health and his own reason for moving from private practice as an obstetrician to his present administrative role in the Vermont Department of Health. Rudy served as a physician in the Air Force for four years and then as an obstetrician for seventeen years. He became tired of practicing medicine as a “lifeguard,” always coming to the rescue rather than actually improving the health of people in his care. He felt constantly reactive—responding to his beeper. Public health, in contrast, focuses on the prevention of diseases. Rather than a focus on end-stage disease, public health intends to move upstream to explore more root causes that can be modified.
Rudy finds the best definition of public health to have been crafted by Charles-Edward Winslow in 1920 at the inauguration of the Yale School of Public Health in 1920:
“… the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting physical (and mental) health through organized efforts for the sanitation of the environment, the control of community infections, the education of the individual in principles of personal hygiene, and the development of the social machinery which will ensure to every individual in the community a standard of living adequate for the maintenance of health.”
Meeting called to order by President Ed Friedman at 12:00.
President Elect Dave Crandall led the club in the Four-Way Test.
Maestro Ernst Oidtmann accompanied our singing of the “Welcome song’ and a rendition of “The Good Ol’ Summertime.”
The following guests were welcomed to the meeting: Curtis Payne, Kirk Baird, and Lyrica Stelle.
Rudy Fedrizzi did his classification talk. See story above.

(Bill Secord wrote: This hard-of-hearing recorder might have gotten much of the details in the following list entirely wrong—including the person who made the brag!)
Ahmad’s daughter is receiving her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.
Bruce Pacht has returned safely from a long motorcycle tour. (But he paid a fine for forgetting yet again to bring his Rotary badge to the meeting.)
Ron Michaud’s grandson has started his second 1800-mile hike on the Appalachian Trail—this time from north to south.
Paul Tierney paid $100.00 for the fortieth celebration of his thirty-ninth birthday and then paid $1.00 for a fine to prove he’s still cheap.
Dave Crandall’s daughter has become engaged, and his son’s wedding is coming up.
Ernst reported on his three weeks away in California both hiking and celebrating a major family reunion—where everyone remained friendly!
Hank reported on two weeks of missed Rotary meetings. He and Carole visited old friends in Westport, Massachusetts, and the Cape. A meeting with another old friend visiting from New Zealand got very bolloxed up when Carole tested positive for COVID the day before the friend’s arrival!
