Program for March 24, 2022: Adventures in the Arts and on Broadway
Our March 24, 2022 Program Adventures in the Arts and on Broadway.

Susan Lamontagne From Fosse Playbill

Susan began her talk by sharing that loves watching what Rotary supports in the community.

She is a teacher at Lebanon Ballet School and has lived in the Upper Valley for 10 years.  She started dancing age 3 and it stuck.  Danced all though middle and high schools. At age 17 she started working at King’s Island, a theme park, doing shows in Cincinnati.  She then attended  the conservatory of music at University of Cincinnati.

Then went on to Point Park College.  Susan had watched her parents sing and do community theatre.  After King’s Island, the world of musical theatre opened up to her.  She went to college for one year.  Then with a partner, she went on to become an “adagio team” on cruise ships for 3.5 years and loved it.  They were fortunate to travel all around the Caribbean and even went to Japan.

Susan returned to New York City where she auditioned and paid rent while going off on tours.  She toured Europe with West Side Story, playing in France and Germany.  She met a wonderful man in Baden; a Boston boy whom she later married.  He was working on Starlight Express in Germany and in the German language!  Horses, roller skating and dancing were her childhood loves so becoming one of the four singers in Starlight was a dream come true when she was only 21.  She was living in Europe and the role in the play allowed her to roller skate, sing and get paid!!  They were treated like rock stars.

When her boyfriend returned to states, Susan went on to Hamburg, Germany to perform in Cats, also in German.  The cast had language training for 3 months before Starlight.  After 3.5 years there, Susan returned to the states.

She then went to Las Vegas for a year with her husband.  The actor's union opened their its first show at the Hilton at the end of the strip; the show turned out to be Starlight Express in English!  They left Vegas to get married then returned and finished out the year.  By this time, Susan was about 29 years old; she said she is 55 now.

They both got to do Cats again, also in English.  All were union shows so cast members all were treated well.  This was her first US tour.  “Demeter” was her role – Susan was becoming a singer who also danced.  In Cats she sang, "Macavity the Mystery Cat". Husband kept track on a map of all the places where they went by bus.  Most stops involved a one-week run; though some were for three weeks.  Often, they would move on after just a couple of shows.  They did this for about a year.

Then Susan embarked on a national tour with West Side Story.  Many of the folks she toured with in this show have gone on to good things, like acting on tv.  She also did Peter Pan with Cathy Rigby, the famous Olympics gymnast; this show wound up on Broadway.  Susan was the original Tiger Lily.  She loved what she was doing and didn’t want to leave.  Even though she showed up late to the auditions, Cathy wanted to keep her.  Cathy Rigby is just as sweet and funny in reality as she is in interviews.  They toured together for about a year.  One time, completely ad-libbed, Cathy brought out a Slinky and handed it to Susan on stage – her costume didn’t have pockets so she had to stash it on stage.  Another time, Cathy blacked out her teeth, completely surprising Susan.

Susan real Broadway premiere was in Fosse, a compilation of choreographer Bob Fosse’s lifetime work.  The show enjoyed a long run.  Susan worked with Gwen Verdon (Fosse’s wife), Ben Vereen and other cream-of-the-crop actors in New York at the time.  The show opened in Toronto, then went to California, Boston and finally Broadway.  Ann Reinking was director (Ann died in 2021 at age 71).

Susan developed rheumatoid arthritis which required replacement of both her hips. She had and is raising twin boys who are now juniors at Lebanon High School.  Though her professional singing/dancing career had to end and she worked in some other fields, she discovered a way to return to her passion.  Her husband is now a social worker and Susan gets to teach through Lebanon Ballet School.  There is no age limit in her adult class.  Susan also works with NCCT, passing on her love for choreography and musical theatre.

Moorings

As has been our norm, we compared our weather, freezing rain with temps near 32 degrees, to Jimmy Brock's weather in Bermuda,70s and sunny.  This made many of us yearn for warmer weather in the Upper Valley.  Ernst shared that he will be traveling to Germany to visit his son and his family.

Marilyn and Ron will be heading out on two back-to-back cruised on April 1st.  They are going to the Caribbean, then Transatlantic to Portugal, Spain, France and the United Kingdom.  They will return on May 10.

With gratitude while Marilyn is away, Bruce Pacht will try to get abbreviated newsletters out via email each week; and Hank will be sending out agendas for our meeting. Hank will be working to identify who will open our Zoom meetings (Bruce Pacht or David Crandall) each week. Remember the link that was with the agenda today is our standing link for all Zoom Club meetings.  If you have questions about meetings, service projects or fundraisers, contact Hank or the leader of the service project or fundraiser.  Here's to wishing Ron and Marilyn bon voyage!

Club Updates and Reminders
  • In Person Meeting at Harvest Hill
We will start meeting in-person at the Dwinell Room on March 31.  Unsure of the Covid precautions that will be in place at the time. Though we still will want proof of vaccination. Masking will be required.

We voted to meet in-person on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays, and by Zoom on the 2nd and 4th, with speakers planned for the 2nd and 3rd meetings.

First in-person meeting will be a Celebration of Rotary Service Please respond to the Doodle poll or email Marilyn sent regarding your attendance.  Spouses and guests welcome.  Primary purpose is to celebrate Steve Whitman’s 50th year in Rotary, also several other members milestone anniversaries.  We also have Paul Harris awards to give out and 2 new members to induct.  District Governor Mike Carrier will join us and provide a few remarks and assist with various presentations.

  • Disaster Relief Grants for Ukraine

Rotarians may write checks to The Rotary Foundation designated for disaster relief.  Nothing from the money we donate goes to overhead for TRF.  Checks may be sent to Ron Bedell– should be done quickly since he’ll be away for 5 weeks starting April 1.  It’s much easier for everyone if donations are made through your My Rotary account on RI’s web page.  You get an electronic receipt.

  • Request from Meals on Wheels V Marilyn
MOW only delivering 2x/week and ready to expand to 5 meals a week for which they need drivers/deliverers.  Marilyn will circulate information so folks can sign up.  JoAnn asked if Marilyn had spoken with Bill Babineau “because his wife used to do all that.”  Ahmad asked if we could reach out to our friends and spread the news?  Yes, says Marilyn.

Subject: Volunteers needed

Hello,

I have recently  retired from DHMC and easing toward  really retiring  by helping out here as the Meals on Wheels Coordinator at the Senior Center in Lebanon.

I am reaching out to DHMC alumni to ask your help in finding Volunteers for the Lebanon Area Senior  Center.  When Covid began, finding Volunteers  was very difficult. It was plain to see at DHMC.  Our Home Delivered Meals program was forced to cut back to delivering just 2 meals a week.  We are trying to get back to 5 days per week.  We have 89+ clients now that really need a hot meal as often as possible.

I am networking with people in the area, and am asking if you are interested or know people that would like to support the Senior Center to reach out to us.

Thank you,

Jay Welenc

April 16.  Quick event.  Set up, event over at noon, out of there by 12:30.  There may be some observers from other solid waste efforts – 3 volunteers from Sustainable Lebanon.

  • Youth Service
Mascoma Interact – Bruce P
Dessert Auction, Friday, April 1, 2022; 3:30 and 5::30 PM.  Rotarians are most welcome to come and bid on the desserts available during this Interact fundraiser.

RISE food-packaging event on Friday, April 22, 2022 – Lebanon Rotary volunteers welcome.  The truck arrives around 10:30 am and needs to be unloaded.  The gym needs tables and equipment set up.  The actual packaging event should begin around noon.  Rotary volunteers should be vigilant about not hogging a fun spot in the production when there are students willing to help.  We should be supporters.

RYLA – Ahmad Haidari
Attended a district-wide discussion about the RYLA June 24-26 in-person.  Capacity is 60-64 students, mostly those who’ve just completed their sophomore years (also known as “rising juniors”).  Everyone who’s been involved has enjoyed RYLA.  Youth Services has funds budgeted for 4 slots; tuition is about $375 per person.  There’s a video in YouTube – link is in the chat box:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGEF5ludjX0

We’ll need to interview candidates.  We want to advertise the activity at the high schools.  There are some posters and we have a small amount of money to let people know – don’t yet have a formal plan. Word of mouth to family members can really help – student who are currently in sophomore year are our targets.  Paul would like to put up a poster at Dan & Whit’s

Friday April 1 – going to LHS to present to students there.

Fundraisers

  • Poker Room – There’s been a delay in submitting our information because of the inadequacy of John’s fingerprints.  Hank was fingerprinted on Tuesday.  We may still have our April 14 beginning date.
  • Golf – Final brochure/sponsor was sent to members by Ed and Marilyn.
  • Brew Fest – Beer glasses are on hand.  We are limiting attendance to 600 this year.

Reminders
  • Upcoming Projects
    • Listen Community Dinners – They are resuming in April.  Go to the sign-up page at Listen’s website.  2nd Tuesday in April is Lebanon Rotary’s first opportunity.
Our Club will be back to doing meals on even months beginning in April.  Sign up to help on the Listen Web Page.

Here is the information we got from Larry Lowndes, Community Dinner Manager:

Your team is keeping the same calendar date - the 2nd Tuesday of even months. So that's April 12th. We just ask now that individuals of your team sign up for each cook-date they plan on attending. This helps us with reporting requirements.

Previously, we have not asked team members to do this. Now however, your registering for events will greatly help us organize, relieve back-end data entry, help facilitate monthly reporting, and will allow us, if necessary, to provide Covid contact tracing. When you arrive at the dining hall, you'll need to punch-in when you arrive and punch-out when you leave. The kiosk is right where you hang your belongings, in the 'Dry Storage" room by the dishwasher.

Please visit  the webpage created exclusively for your team at  http://vhub.at/lebrot before your next visit. We recommend bookmarking it in your web browser and using the address to access your account. It will save you and us time. Also, please consider sharing the link with other members (or potential members) of your team.

Once on your team's webpage, you will see the dates that your team is registered for. If you personally plan on attending any of the events, click the “Sign Up” button next to the dates (or cancel events that you can no longer attend). At that point you'll be asked to set up your account if you haven't done so already. Be sure when asked to click the checkbox stating that you are interested in the Community Dining Hall.

If you are already registered on Volunteerhub, be sure to update your Listen 'affiliations'. You'll find them after you sign in, on the upper right when you click on your name. By doing so, you can find classes and other information.

If you have any questions, please contact Larry Lowndes.

As always, thank you for your support and all you do for Listen Community Services!

Best regards,

Larry

  • Styrofoam Collection – April 16, behind Jake’s Coffee Shop from 9-11 am.

Press release for Styrofoam Collection in April
Media Contact: Liane Avery, L99Liane@aol.com, 860-556-3114

Event Details: Saturday, April 16, 2022, 9-11 am behind Jake’s Coffee, 227 Mechanic Street, Lebanon, NH

2022 Foam Collection Day in Lebanon

Lebanon, NH

Sustainable Lebanon is once again partnering with the Lebanon Rotary Club to offer a polystyrene (Styrofoam) collection day on Saturday, April 16, from 9 - 11 am at 227 Mechanic Street in Lebanon (behind Jake’s Coffee). The event will take place rain or shine.

Various types of foam will be collected for recycling, including polystyrene #6 (EPS), polyethylene #4 (EPE), and #6 XPS insulation board foam which will be driven to a recycling facility in Massachusetts. This includes packaging foam used for TVs, computers, and appliances, as well as foam coolers. Food service foam, including clean food containers and egg cartons will be collected and recycled separately. We ask that all tape and labels be removed and all foam is clean, dry, and free of food residue or other debris.

PLEASE NOTE: Foam peanuts should be brought directly to the UPS Store at True Value Hardware in Hanover.

Additional information shared about Styrofoam:

Marilyn is working with DG Mike Carrier and two other DGs that cover clubs in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, and Cindy Heath to broaden the collection opportunities with other Rotary Club in Northern New England.  There’s a company in NJ that renders Styrofoam into ingots (using a “densifier”) the ingots may be stacked using far less space than the raw Styrofoam until one has enough for a tractor-trailer.  Perhaps the Gilford Sanitation Dept could be a hub for collection and ingot-forming.  Apparently, there’s a company in Quebec that may be using these ingots as home insulation.  There’s another firm in MA turning Styrofoam into picture frames which, when done, can be re-densified!! Marilyn is learning more about Styrofoam than she ever envisioned learning.

Phil Bush: Phil is also a member of Sustainable Lebanon.  He reported that the last time, we accepted a lot of stuff that wasn’t recycled and is now resting in a member’s cellar.  The news releases this time will LIST things that are acceptable.  As to the trade-off between the fossil fuels moving the Styrofoam—Phil reports that it’s still a net gain to do the recycling.

Paul Tierney:  Are we tied into any of the really big users, like the medical facilities?  Marilyn is speaking to D-H and Cindy is talking with the others.

Phil Bush:  He shared that Sustainable Lebanon has hired Jennifer Grant to be its part-time program manager.

Paul: Have we spoken to the Hartford and Norwich waste folks to try and remove Styrofoam from their flow?  Marilyn:  Initially, we are working with individuals and setting up systems to deal with higher volumes.

Ahmad:  I reached out to Lebanon’s Solid Waste group. They recommended that we use the high school as a collection location.  They would be willing to talk with us about what they are looking at in terms of overall solid waste, electricity generation, etc.  Marilyn will pass along the information to Jane Mason for a possible program and will also mention the information to Cindy Heath.

  • Rise Against Hunger – Friday, April 22; Mascoma Valley Regional High School.
Truck arrives 10:30 am; packaging starts at noon. Rotarians may come whenever they want Just a reminder, only pitch in to help where help is needed.  Help to make sure all students are involved in the project first.

  • Food Drive — April 30, 2022 at the Lebanon Co-Op 9 AM to 1 PM

  • Golf tournament – Ed Friedman

We are in full search mode for sponsors and teams.  Reach out to your friends, associates and businesses to increase the sponsorships.  Ed will distribute forms for solicitation.  Tournament is May 26 at Eastman.  Volunteers are needed especially to help with break down – too many of us disappear at the end, so this year, let’s have more than just Ed, Bruce Bergeron, Marilyn and Ron.  Break down tents, tables, etc.

Happy Thoughts/Concerns

  • Jane Mason:  Her father Pete (past Lebanon Rotary president) had his procedure and is back to normal .  Just turn 93.  Back to cooking and driving.  (Note-takers note:  Pete was president on June 6, 1976, the day when Steve Christy, John Yacavone and Bruce Pacht were inducted.)
  • Cindy Jerome:  Rudy and I took a vacation together to Barbados for a week and did ocean kayaking and sailing and motorboating and eating and drinking (onlyu very diluted drinks, Cindy assured us).  Rudy:  We saw monkeys one morning – made me think I was in a Rotary meeting.  Rudy’s youngest daughter, Ellie, age 17, is learning to fly.  Yesterday she flew all over southern NH and VT and is really hooked.
  • Jane Mason:  Bill Secord does an excellent job with the gift books.  Jane saw the gold medal fencing performance in the Olympics of the woman who wrote today’s gift book!
  • Phil Bush:  Chad Finer, retired emergency room physician, has made a retirement career of recording live music events in the Upper Valley.  He records and distributes them.  Now recording upstairs at Dan & Whit’s in Norwich.  He occasionally posts them on Upper Valley Listserv.  Last Saturday, Phil recorded 7 songs with him. Phil has played guitar since age 15, singing and writing songs.  Marilyn asked if Phil could bring his guitar on March 31 to sing a patriotic song:  Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream, says Phil.  [Wikipedia:  The song was written in 1950 by Ed McCurdy.  It’s first recorded release was on a Pete Seeger album in 1956, and went on to be featured on albums by the Weavers, Joan Baez, the Kingston Trio, Simon & Garfunkle, and Johnny Cash.]
  • Ernst and Linda are off to Munich for two weeks.  They’ll stay with son Max.
  • Paul Tierney saw Ron Michaud yesterday who gave him a book: On Bullshit.  It’s short, but impactful.  John said, “It’s the Number 2 edition.”
  • Reminder that Marion Steiner's mother has died.  Her memorial service is on March 26, 2022. Marilyn sent out an email with additional information about this.
