Two years ago, U.S. Rotary members in Maine set out to improve the education system in Bikaner, Rajasthan, an Indian city near the border of Pakistan. The Rotary Club of Kennebunk Portside chose Bikaner because club member Rohit Mehta was originally from the area and had connections there. Mehta put the club in contact with Rotarians in India to provide desks for four government-run schools. But when community leaders returned with a request for more desks, the Maine Rotarians decided they had to think bigger. The Rotary Foundation had rolled out its new grant model, which required that the...

Enjoying calm winds and peaceful Pacific waters, Seung Jin Kim dove off his 43-foot sailboat, the Arapani, to swim with some dolphins nearby. The serenity that day near the equator was a stark contrast to the 60 mph winds and 23-foot waves he had to fight around Cape Horn, the southern tip of South America. But Kim, a veteran sailor and member of the Rotary Club of Seokmun, in Chungcheongnam, Korea, expected such challenges when he set out in mid-October on a 25,600-mile journey around the world. In addition to fulfilling a lifelong dream, Kim is using the trip to raise awareness and funds...

After the first cases of Ebola reached Liberia's capital, Monrovia, last June, local Rotary members feared that the city's limited health care system wouldn't be able to contain the highly infectious, often-deadly disease. Those fears were realized when infections quickly multiplied, underscoring the speed with which Ebola can spread in an urban center. It was the first time the hemorrhagic fever had threatened a major city since it erupted in West Africa last March. Now, after months of crisis-level response, and with the number of new cases declining, club members are looking to the long...

Despite his longstanding interest in polio eradication, polio was not on Joe Pratt's mind as he prepared for a mid-April 2012 climb of Mount Everest, the highest mountain on earth. But that changed in late 2011, when the resident of Nottingham, New Hampshire, USA, participated in a polio immunization project in Pakistan with fellow Rotary member Steve Puderbaugh. Moved by the efforts of the Pakistanis to battle the crippling disease, and by the vulnerability of the young victims, Pratt reset the focus of his climbing adventure. Pakistan is one of three countries where polio has never been...

Members of the Rotary Club of San Francisco Evening meet at a wine bar after work, share a social outing, and promote all their activities on social media like Meetup and Facebook. As the first evening club in the city, it has attracted many young professionals from Silicon Valley tech firms whose work schedules keep them from joining a more traditional club that meets for breakfast or lunch. But more than that, the evening format has helped the club grow by 30 percent since it received its charter in mid-2013. Danielle Lallement, who was its charter president, says the club has been...

Valerie Armstrong  Invocation
Pre-Meeting called to order at 12:15 by President Garlan.

The club sang a rousing chorus of R-O-T-A-R-Y followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.  Although the patriotic song choice was not recorded, this Spoke writer will confidently assume it was either America or America the Beautiful. The invocation was given by Jason E., who recited the Boy Scout Philmont blessing.

Lunch!

Meeting called to order at 12:37 by Secretary Steve.

NO VISITING ROTARIANS

GUESTS
  • Ron C. brought his lovely wife Priscilla.
  • President Garlan invited Catherine Hogan, the Grant Director at West Central Services.

DRAW
  • The ticket was drawn by Garlan's guest, Catherine, and won by Paul Boucher, who was only able to find the 2Y.

The club sang a not-so-rousing rendition of Old Paint.

THE ROTARY MINUTE by Ron C.
A recent post to RI's Rotary Voices: Stories of service from around the world asked, "Is your [Rotary] club fun?"  The San Francisco Evening club is!  Service is important but Rotary should also be fun—your membership will benefit as well.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
  • President Garlan pointed out that our club supports West Central Services usually via Paddle Power.  Let him know of other ways we can offer support.
  • Guest Catherine announced that Paddle Power this year is on August 15th and 16th.
  • Forrest C. had a surplus of fresh eggs; they will be sold off after the meeting for $3/dozen, all proceeds going to Rotary Foundation. Thanks, Forrest!
  • President Garlan reminded everyone of the following dates:
Salt Hill Makeup: Monday, 13 April 2015
Board Meeting: Tuesday, 14 April 2015

BRAGS
  • Vice President Kevin recently had a tough bout with pneumonia, but his real brag is that the next two weeks he'll be spending in St. Martin's on the beach.
  • Greeter Valerie invited everyone to attend the gymnastics show at the new Lebanon Middle School that night (the 9th). The show featured 46 female gymnasts and 3 male gymnasts, two of whom are her sons.

PROGRAM: CLASSIFICATION TALKS introduced by Paul B.

Jason E. comes to our club as an experienced Rotarian, having been a member in Wyoming where he worked for the Boy Scouts; he's also lived in Idaho and Utah.  He is the oldest of six Eagle Scouts—there would have been seven, but his sister was not qualified; she went on to raise her own Eagle Scouts, though.  Jason and his family came to New Hampshire when his wife received an offer from Southern New Hampshire University to head one of their departments. Here he serves as district executive for the Boy Scouts of America and lives in Hopkinton with his wife and two daughters.

Valerie A. admits she is not much of a public speaker, but if you ask her about her kids, she could speak for hours! She was born and raised in Cleveland Ohio by a single mother who was one of the top car salespersons at a time when women were not very welcome in the field. Valerie took up competitive roller skating when she was 7 years old to keep herself occupied and found herself devoting many hours to the sport.  By the age of 16, she was 2nd in the world for pairs!  After graduating from school, Valerie worked for a bank, and then a meat facility before a long-time career at Beck Aluminum. Now in New Hampshire, she works for Farm Family Insurance and loves it. But her two sons are her pride and joy.

Bartolo G. grew up around Newfound Lake in New Hampshire with his parents and brothers, Vincenzo and Anthony (this Spoke writer is guessing they're not a Swedish family).  Bartolo's father served as director of Camp Mayhew, a non-profit camp for at-risk boys supported by our local United Way.  After graduating from President-Elect Don's alma mater, Bartolo coached for many different schools—at Washington College in Maryland he lost two championships in sudden death overtime. Eventually, he found himself the assistant lacrosse coach at Dartmouth, and enjoyed it so much, he wanted to return to the area.  On August 1, his State Farm Insurance office will open at the Hanover Street Plaza.  Bartolo's wife, Shirley, is a highly successful business woman whom he met in the 4th grade, reconnecting years later on Facebook.

WITH TIME TO SPARE, MORE BRAGS
  • Forrest recently enjoyed a terrifying truck ride down a slick icy highway (of course on his way to a fly fishing shop), and saw his life flashing before him. His final two thoughts were (1) "How tight is my seatbelt!" and (2) "Oh crap, this is going to hurt."
  • District Governor Bruce teased some great entertainment for the upcoming District Conference; read all about it (and register if you haven't!) at the District 7850 Conference website.
