Moorings

We were back on Zoom today.  Before the meeting stared, John Yacavone enjoyed talking about his latest adventure. He is taking a class in memoir writing. This led to Marilyn Bedell asking him about his stint as weatherman without credentials on WNNE is the early days of the TV station.

Ernst Oidtmann shared he was enjoying a glass of grapefruit lemonade.

Marilyn Bedell transmitted greetings from former Rotarian Andy Forbes to Bruce Pacht and John Yacavone.  Andy is a lifeguard at CCBA.

At 12:04 p.m. – Marilyn Bedell rang the bell, and Hank called the meeting to order. He welcomed us on a warm, rainy Thursday afternoon.

Hank asked JoAnn to recite the 4-Way Test, but she had technical difficulties, so Ron Bedell stepped in to do this task, though it was curious that he almost forgot the first part of the 4-Way Test, Is it the truth?  Wondering why he  wanted to skip this part...hummm.

Then it was on to Club Business

Club Business and Announcements
  • Brew Fest

Things you need to know:
  • Set-up will start on Friday, September 3, 2021, from 3 to 5 PM — The tent set-up time will be earlier in the day, as it is scheduled to be place on Friday, and will be checked by the Fire Department.
  • Additional set up will be done on Saturday morning starting at 9:00 AM.
  • We still need to establish the start time for Pourer.  They will need to arrive early to receive pourer education.
  • Red wrist bands will need to be worn by all Rotarian volunteers and other workers (food vendors and entertainers) at the event — No one working at the event can drink beer.  Green wristbands will be worn by our patrons, and indicates that they have paid to drink beer.  Everyone on the site should have a wristband on if not they should be reported to John or Hank.  Without a wristband you can not be at the Brew Fest. Designated drivers must have on red wristbands.
  • Don’t forget to wear your yellow Rotary tee shirt.  Bruce Bergeron will bring more shirts to the event in case you don't have one already.
  • We will have a police officer on site throughout the event.
  • John Yacavone and Hank Clarke will have taken the Lebanon Crowd Management course, and will help survey the grounds to be on the lookout for problems caused by participants.
  • Drinking Rules for Volunteers — No volunteers in any capacity can drink from 12 (noon) to 4 PM.  When participants are herded away at 4 PM, our volunteers are permitted to sample the leftover beer.
  • Assignments — will be working on them shortly.  Entrance, exits need to be monitored – NO ONE MAY ENTER through the exits.  When people leave, we cut off their band and they have to pay again to get in. Our volunteer pourers under the tent with 12 or so of the breweries pourers will work from the inside of a rectangle of tables.  A couple other volunteers will need to ferry beer and ice from the refrigerator truck to the tent. Others  will handle registration, cash and credit card.
  • Sponsors and Ads — Just received another ad this morning! We are now well over $11,000 in ads and sponsors.  Betsey Child is working on the printed program booklet to be handed out during the event.
  • Brewers – We are up to 34 according to Bruce Bergeron.
  • Food Vendors – Salt hill Pub and 110 Grill
  • Entertainer — Chris Pallutto Duo will be our entertainers.  They have played at both Salt hill and 110 Grill and at the Shed at Killington.  John says “they are very good.”
  • Masks – John said that APD donated 5 boxes of masks, 60 in a box.  John thinks requiring masks is something we should do, but we’ll have reaction from people.  Hank is taking the lead from Lebanon — if the town says outdoor activities don’t require masking, he wouldn’t want them to be required to enter. Rudy says that things will change in the next couple of weeks — every county but one in Vermont is in a “substantial” transmission situation but right now we are NOT advising that outdoor events require masks.  We agree that workers should be masked because we’ll come into contact with hundreds of people.  We will refund the price of tickets if folks decide that shouldn’t come in. This topic will be discussed more fully by the Brew Fest Committee again at their meeting on Monday.
  • Bruce Bergeron will send an email about set-up times on Friday.
  • Marilyn Bedell:  Everyone please share the information from the Rotary Facebook page on your own Facebook page.  Rich Wallace is doing a boost to our target demographic.  We provided info to the UV Business Alliance.  The color ad appeared again in today’s Valley News.
  • John Yacavone:  You will see Brew Fest signs around the City.  Radio ads start up the last week in August.  We’ll have ONE spot during the 9/3 Red Sox game.
  • Brew Fest meeting on Monday will clarify the mask/vaccination sign, times for volunteers to arrive, and other loose ends to be communicated to club members via email.
  • Hybrid Meetings
Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health is planning renovations to the Dwinell Room's AV capabilities which should allow us to begin experimenting with hybrid meetings.  September 30 is the expected date of the the equipment installation completion, but Cindy reminded us that this is not a firm date for implementation of the new system.  Cindy has been assured that we will be able to use the equipment to do hybrid meeting. We will wait for this to happen before doing hybrid meetings.
  • Listen Community Dinners
Our next dinner is September 14, 2021.  HELP WANTED.  Please sign-up to help if you can. We need 3-4 more volunteers.

Bruce Bergeron will be asking someone on the Community Services Committee to take over the responsibility of making sure we have cook teams for all meals.  This has been Hank's responsibility but we need to take this off his plate since he has a lot to do as president.

It is time for everyone to sign up for the meals between now and December.  Please pick one or two days when you can help prepare meals. It is my bet you will come away knowing you have done a really good thing for our community.

  • 100th Anniversary
Dave Crandall:  Our Committee has narrowed the list to 3 projects which we’ll present shortly to the Club.  We are gathering cost estimates.  Next meeting is 9/13 and hope that after that, we’ll prepare a presentation to the club.  Ernst confirmed that he and Dave would walk the trail again, meeting at the Lebanon Cinema 8/25 at 2:30 PM.  Feel free to join them to see the site being explored for a pavilion.

  • Charities Update

  • River Clean-up
September 25, is the date for River Clean-up...rain or shine. a combined Rotary and Conservation Commission affair.  Headquarters will be in the pavilion behind the CCBA.  Ernst met with Casella re: dumpsters — they will support it again.  We don’t need their enormous dumpsters, but we can use two standard-size.  Lebanon Public Works will park a truck for us to load with tires. Pick-up trucks will be need to pick up trash found in the river to the east and to the west.  Food?  This year, Ernst may go for coffee and donuts in the morning and/or pizzas for lunch.  This will needs a bit of a budget and Ernst says he has no idea how much would be involved. Club agree we should cover food costs.  Canoes — Ernst has one; he’d like one or two others.  Marilyn suggests contacting Dick Podolec about engaging Dartmouth Rotaractors.

  • Other Club Business
Ron:  Nominations are open for District Governor — to apply you must have been a president for a year. +7 years in Rotary by 2024 and the endorsement of the club. Contact Ron, if you want more info about this adventure in Rotary.

Anything else for the good of the club?  Happy Thoughts/concerns

Marilyn Bedell reported that Karen Clements’ husband had surgery, and his mother died last Tuesday.  In addition, the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations will begin a visit at DHMC on Monday.  As Karen shared, when it rains it pours.  Mother Nature may add to the rain too as we deal with Tropical Storm Henri. Keep Karen and Peter in your thoughts.

Ernst Oidtmann’s two grandchildren were in town for 2 months.  They had a wonderful time without parents who were studying German at Middlebury College.

Hank Clarke’s car was having a repair done in Barre so he had a loaner which he took to visit a friend he hadn't seen in many years.  It rekindled a friendship.

Marilyn Bedell’s sister took a bag of creepy-crawly things to church to deliver a children's sermon about how all creatures contribute to life. Each child went home with a collection of creepy-crawly things.  Marilyn wonders how the kid's parents are enjoying them.

Sharing Stories…Finding Your Rotary Foundation Passion

Posted by Marilyn Bedell, Endowment Major Gift Advisor, Zone 32
What does this red rooster have to do with the Rotary Foundation?

As I think back to when PDG Ron Bedell and I started making consistent donations to the Rotary Foundation, this rooster played a role.  For 23 years, Tom Plumb, a former member of the Rotary Club of Middlebury Vermont has dedicated most of his Rotary and life’s passions to doing sustainable projects in Honduras.

Tom was a part of a team of Rotary District 7850 Rotarians who went to Honduras to see how they could help after Hurricane Mitch in 1998. At the District Conference in 2001, Tom came to report on the projects he had completed and hoped to complete.
In addition to speaking about his work, he brought along a satchel of these red roosters which came from a women’s artist cooperative in Honduras.  He purchased the roosters to support the crafters, and then asked us to purchase them to help him raise funds for his next Rotary projects.  I decided I had to at least buy a rooster to help him with his vision to make Honduras a better place to live.

I now see this rooster every day in my living room.  It reminds me of the power of one and how small investments can lead to real change.   Our District has continued to support Tom’s work, and clubs in our district have contributed to the various global grants he has developed.

I believe in a small way my purchase of this red rooster has helped to change and save lives in Honduras.  Tom’s work in partnership with many Rotarians has been a Gift to the World.  Tom is changing and saving lives.

Since 1998, Tom has done many projects that encompass Rotary’s seven areas of focus. From water and sanitation to basic education and literacy to disease prevention and treatment and maternal and child health. He spends as much time as he can in Honduras and moved to Texas to be closer to the people – he is committed to helping.

Now that Ron and I have made both major gifts and endowment commitments, I know our contributions will continue to support dedicated Rotarians like Tom Plumb.

I can only hope that each of you will reflect on your own Rotary Foundation stories that led to you developing a passion for the Rotary Foundation.  Don’t keep your stories to yourself - share these with your fellow Rotarians and non-Rotarians.  Who knows, you may help another Rotarian or friend of Rotary find their own passion for supporting our Rotary Foundation that will lead to our next generation of major donors and advocates for our Endowment.
